Alright, so a few things have happened since I last logged in. Yesterday Sydony and I packed up in Bremen and headed off to Hamburg. We got up and off to the train station, a bit early, but then it is so much nicer to get to the station and find your platform than to be rushing around (with suitcases). While waiting for the train we noticed an odd mother and daughter (I think that's what they were) wearing old 70's style clothes. THen as we went to our platform we noticed a few other groups of people all wearing 70's era clothing. Bright colours, bell bottoms, platform shoes, big hair, flowers, it was all there. The platform that we were on had a number of trains all going to Hamburg and these people were all ... read more

Bremen is an interesting city. We spent the day walking around the city center, the altstadt. We looked in a lot of shops, but neither of us found anything that we really wanted. There was a nice pair of shoes, with a rainforest motif, but they had quite a bit of a heel and so it was unlikely that I would wear them on this trip. We are still too early in our trip to be buying a lot of things that we will just have to drag around with us. We also stopped at St. Peter's Cathedral. It is a beautiful church with a lot of vibrant colors and beautiful roofs, at least on the main level. We went down to the basement and it is much darker and there is no color down there, ... read more

Today was our first train ride of the trip. Our train didn't leave until later in the afternoon so we had the morning to stroll along Kurfürstendamm Strasse and make a few purchases. After retreving our bags from the hostel we went to the main train station and had a bite to eat for lunch. We got a little confused as to what train we were on because there were two trains listed on Platform 13 at 14:49. One was our train (ICE 556) and the other was an IC train. When the train arrived I asked the controller and she point to the end we were standing by and told us to get on there. Apparently the train splits later on. I don't pretend to understand but we got on where she pointed and it ... read more

For our one and only real day in Berlin we decided to get up early. After a quick breakfast in our hotel room we were off. We walked down Kurfürstendamm Straße, a large shopping street. When we reached near the end we got onto the U-bahn (underground) and went to Potsdamer Platz. We walked to the Jewish memorial and went down into the exhibit. It was gruesome and horrible but also quite interesting. I didn't realize that the Nazi's originally put Jews in the back of sealed trucks and vented the carbon monoxide into the back to kill them. After that morbid display it was nice to get back into the sunshine and we walked to the Brandenburg Tor. We then started walking towards Alexanderplatz but we didn't realize how far it was so we stopped ... read more

This morning we got up and tidied our room before checkout. We got our bus tickets from the hostel and went down the street to wait for our bus. We each had two bus tickets though and we were wondering if the lady at the hostel had missunderstood us when we asked for 2 tickets, one for each of us not 2 each. It turns out that she did not make a mistake and you actually needed two for the bus ride. We took the but to the main train station. We went to go find a place to lock up our bags so that we could go exploring for a while. We went down to the baggage lockers but the ones that would have been big enough for our suitcases were full and all of ... read more

Today we took a day trip to the island Lovön. We were going to catch the 10am ferry but we got a little turned around on the way there and we finally arrived at the dock around 11:00. Luckily the ferry left every half hour. It takes an hour to get to the island. On the island is one of the official Royal residences, Drottningholm. It is the Queen's Palace, Drottning actually translates to Queen. For those of you who have been to Versailles it is basically a smaller version. Interestingly Drottningholm was rebuilt in 1662 following a fire the previous December and Versailles was not started until 1664. We walked through the Baroque style garden to the Chinese Pavillion. It was an interesting building, inside each room was a different color red, white, green, yellow. ... read more

Today we had breakfast in our hostel. It was a nice relaxing morning before heading off to the Royal Palace. We made it there for the changing of the guards. I much prefered this changing of the guard to the one in London. There were actually two sets of guards, wearing different uniforms that actually swapped places. Also having less people there meant that we got a better view this time! We went into the Royal Palace, which is the official residence of His Majesty the King of Sweden. We went on a guided tour of the Royal Apartments. It was a facinating tour. The Castle originally looked quite different. It started as a single tower and then a castle grew up around it. In 1697 they were going to renew the palace and they started ... read more

So our first full day in Sweden. There is a boat race here in Stockholm, right on our little island of Skeppsholmen. It is the ÅF Offshore Race. I don't know much about it because the newspaper that talks all about it is in Swedish. I did however learn that the starting point was moved to be here in central Stockholm. This race does mean that there are a lot of people here! We spent today walking around, a bit up in main Stockholm and then we walked around the island beside ours, Gamla Stan. Gamla Stan is the old town and while being very touristy now it is a lovely area of charming cobblestone roads and narrow streets. We got an ice cream to have while we wandered up and down looking into shops. We ... read more

Today was basically a travel day. We got up for our final breakfast in London, went out to the shops one last time and then checked out of our hotel. We took the underground back to London Heathrow airport and after checking our bags in and going through security we had lunch. Our plane was scheduled to depart at 1:50pm but due to heavy air traffic and a plane that needed an emergency landing got cleared to go into our lane. Eventually we took off only about an hour late. It was a fairly uneventful flight, when we got into Sweden we were met with a huge crowd of people going through passport control. When we finally got out to the main airport it sank in that we were in Sweden! Of course neither of us ... read more

Today we managed to get up ontime and we had another lovely english breakfast here at the hotel. Our first stop was Buckingham Palace. We arrived there shortly before the Changing of the Guard. We decided to stay and watch the changing of the guard. It was actually very underwhelming! Mostly it was just men in bear hats standing around. Every once in a while a small group would break off and march a few steps. They also played Pirates of the Carribean which was interesting, I loved it but it seemed to be an odd choice of music. The most exciting part was that the Queen's car drove by. There were SO many people there though, it was hard to see what was going on most of the time. We were outside for over an ... read more
