After a week of intense conference going, I had a packet of rib-flavoured chips for breakfast. Yum! You can hear the crinkle and crunch in this photo. By the time, I got to Colorado...... read more

I've uncovered why my apartment seems so big. Originally, I thought it was because of the huge space and lack of inhabitants. In fact, it's because my phone book is so tiny! In other towns, the phone book is thin. In Nanaimo, the phone book is short and narrow! Meanwhile, I discovered a house with an address which reminds me of a Rush song. On this week's trip, I discovered a police presence at the airport. Why the man in the wheel chair was handcuffed and boarded my plane first, I'll never know. And I discovered why the long weekend traffic was so terrible - two motorcyclists broke down and had to be given a talking to by the police. All in one fun-filled week!... read more

What do Bryan Adams and I have in common? Our guitar tech. Richard is amazing. After a trip out east, I discovered that my beloved "log" had two damaged tuning machines: one bent, the other broken off. Korg Canada would not, could not, sell me replacements. But Richard looked at it and ground a spare to create a new machine. Cheers to Richard, my (and Bryan Adams') guitar tech.... read more

I had heard the whispered tales of Alberta's springtime weather. From an ancient book, I took a clue: scaling the frozen mountaintops, fjording the river Alph, finding the secret cave, I searched for the lost Xanadu. After breaking my fast on honeydew and drinking the milk of paradise, I rose to this sight: prisoner of the lost Xanadu, because the rental car agency didn't provide me with a scraper.... read more

Flying off to my old home city today. In the warmth of my island paradise, where the palm trees dance in the breeze, and the caravans drive past the airport, it struck me hard: I am an islander at heart. No more for me, the big city life. No more the traffic noise outside my apartment window. No more neighbours shouting, playing drums, moving furniture at 3am. Driving to the hotel in my former home city, I almost turned off at 149 Street! Old habits die hard. A new life awaits me in seven weeks!... read more

Had dinner with a very good friend tonight. Over the past three years we've had dinner at least once per year, whenever I visit this city. It's getting to be a tradition! We went to the same Thai restaurant - good rice noodles in a spicy soup. Then, to avoid a parking fine, we drove around the block and had a cup of fancy tea at the same coffee house. Another good tradition! My friend wishes you well.... read more

A man on the plane suggested that the charter boating companies are a good spend: 4 hours for $400 and you get two fish. Me, I see that as $200 per fish. So, I asked him more about his experience. Ultimately, I have to get a boat - at least 19 feet, with Yamaha salt-proof engine and a kicker. "But if you don't know how to back up with a trailer, you might as well forget it!" Ho ho! I can do that!... read more

Yesterday was a windy day, so I decided to spend 20 minutes roasting my last pound of Ethiopian Sidamo. It may be the moister atmosphere on the coast, and it might be the new stove, but after 20 minutes the beans were still light brown! I increased the heat to eight and it still took another 15 minutes to roast properly. So, my neighbours got a chance to see the eccentric winnowing the chaff from his beans. This morning, with freshly roasted beans, I ground a cupful of my favourite brew. It's a good life with a quiet moment before a lazy day. I spent the morning finishing the book a friend had bought me. 364 pages of fiction. It's not like me to read that many pages in less than two months, so it must ... read more

My first Saturday on this land locked strip of granite and vegetation: locate the guitar store. While parking, I noticed a shadow in the sky. Here is a photo of the eagle - a more powerful lens would make it look less of a spec. You'll have to take my word for it that this was a bald eagle. Next stop was shopping for supplies. This turkey looked very enticing but the price! $70 for a turkey? I'm used to the sale price of $13. That's quite a difference. Double check the photo and you'll see that this is also a bald turkey. I found a sofa for the apartment. I really like the colour! What do you think? Just around the corner is a bicycle coop. For $10/hr you can take any of their donated ... read more
