Hiking poles
Heather, Love your blog. Sounds to me like you would really like using 2 hiking poles especially for walking downhill. I also used to wear neoprene "sleeves" which reduced my knee pain. I did have 2 very successful knee replacements 3 years ago! Enjoy your travels!!

Torres del Paine

Torres del Paine
Our most beautiful place in the World. We drove down the Andes in a 4WD from Bariloche and Torres del Paine blew us away at every corner. The wind was intense but the skies were clear. Yet when our daughter was there some years later it was wet. windy and miserable. Love reading the stories of others who go there.

Great way to spend Christmas! I am especially glad you got to see the solstice light there. Wind and waves and peaks and wild life of all kinds. I am glad that you posted the picture of the Guanacos, otherwise I would not have realised that they are a deer like creature.

Awesome! And Soltice Too.
Thanks for all the scoop and reflections and details, Heather. The fox reminds me of the Arabian fox (size wise and color). And the End of the World sign is great. The long solstice must have been so crazy. SR

Return to Peru
Wonderfully informative blog of the Cusco to Sacred Valley to the travail of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu...makes me want to return as well. Great photos of your highlights but I wanted to see more! How lucky were your students to have you to take them there. It is exciting to see the ingenuity of the Incas in so many places and sobering to see how the Spaniards built over some sites to impose their religion on the locals. How wonderful that Machu Picchu remained undiscovered by the conquistadors and has been preserved for you and I.

La Paz!
You discovered my secret place! The Peace. Very great observations. La Paz has really come in to itself and the old downtown and waterfront are lovely places with plenty of things to do. The malecón has always been a gathering point for locals and it has been spruced up over the years. The beaches just outside of town are also spectacular. But of course whale sharks have become so popular and I’m glad they are tightening the regulations as more people come to swim with them. I’ve been going to La Paz for 40 years and it’s still my favourite.

Costa Rica is just beautiful
As my latest obsession is taking macro photos of insects in my Oz backyard. I find this pic captivating. The colour diversity of Costa Rica looks stunning.

Owl Butterfly Caterpillar

The beauty and variety of little things in Nature also makes me shake my head in wonderment. I have been spending recent months macroing mini-beasts in my Aussie backyard (I live on the edge of a National Park) and discovering incredible critters that constantly make me shake my head in disbelief. This Owl Butterfly caterpillar is a gem indeed.

I love reading your travel stories! It warms my heart to know you are still out in the world exploring, and inspires myself to get out and travel! I'm deadlocked in school for the next few years, but a friend of mine and myself are planning to ride motorcycles from Mexico to Argentina upon graduation. We are doing a lot of planning, and when the time comes I hope you will be there to read all about it. So much love and respect for you Miss Jasper.

Me encanta Costa Rica!
I am so glad that you were able to make this trip, Heather. Costa Rica is a wonderful country and the people are so friendly and proud of their country. They have taken an active role in preserving the flora and fauna of their nation so that many generations will have the same opportunities that you have had. I see Karen Weinberg from time to time as well as some other friends of your family and always check in to find out how you are doing. I hope the job in Seattle is a good one--fulfilling and rewarding. Please let me know when you are next in Boise. Perhaps we could get together for lunch. Take care and enjoy your visit!
