Arrived in the wet for a few days in Buttermere. The forecast wasn't great but then again, if you wait for decent weather in the UK, you'd never get out. Started this walk with a clockwise circuit of Buttermere and walking as far as the village. Then, in a break in the weather, entered the woods surrounding Mill Beck and climbed up, eventually reaching open country. A short, steep climb then led to a grassy path heading up to the eastern end of Low Bank. The weather was getting better all the time, although a wind was blowing. Walking along the ridge to Rannerdale Knotts afforded great and extensive views taking in Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater, as well as the Solway Firth and Scotland. Lunch was taken at the summit of Rannerdale Knotts, before beginning ... read more

After a leisurely breakfast, I left the hotel about 09h00 and headed into town to buy my usual lunch - quiche and a ham salad baguette. I then went off to hire a bike for the day. My plan was to head up into the vineyards covering a total of 22 miles. And so, in the warm sun, I cycled through the park and headed downhill alongside the Boulevard Vaubelle to the River Yonne. Not wanting to take any chances, I used a couple of pedestrian crossings before joining the tow path at the Ecluse Auxerre. Following the canal to Vaux, I crossed the river by a narrow vehicular bridge before locating a well-marked track taking me to Champs-sur-Yonne. After pausing for a drink of water in the centre of Champs, I crossed the railway and ... read more

As usual, breakfast was at 07h30. As usual, I headed to the boulangerie for my Jambon avec salade and a quiche. Unusually, I headed for the station to catch the 10h00 train to Vermenton. Unusually, the train had been rescheduled and was now running at 10h18. Thus, I arrived in Vermenton, in the sunshine, a little later than planned and set off on a walk through the fields and woods. The sun was shining and the birds were singing and a gentle breeze wafted the humidity. All too soon, I was removing the legs from my trousers, turning them into shorts - and reaping the benefits of the coolness by succumbing to the constant bite of mosquitoes. Lunch was at one, at a perfectly timed river location and eaten to the sound of water rushing over ... read more

A very long cycle ride was on the cards today - a total of 40miles (64km) was to be achieved by end of play! There are so few trains out of Auxerre. This meant that I had to get the 08h16 out, arriving in Clamecy at 09h12 - a little too early to start, but a better option than the next train. Leaving the town, I headed for the Canal du Nivernais, stopping for lunch at the Ecluse de la Place, before eventually getting back into Auxerre at 17h00. The story is in the photos ...... read more

Decided to walk through the vineyards today so, arrived at the station in time to catch the 10h16 train. Right at the last minute, a guard rushed over, informing us all that there was a platform alteration that hadn't been announced! Thirty people suddenly upped sticks and dashed across the tracks to the far platform where our train was waiting. Fifteen minutes later, the train pulled in to Champs-Saint-Bris. Leaving the platform by the main station building, I headed up the road, crossing the main N6 and began to walk up towards St. Bris. My first poppies of the day blew gently in the breeze by the side of the road. Shortly after, I turned onto a minor road and then into a stony track heading uphill. Following the little red and white GR waymarks, I ... read more

07h30, and the dining room was filling up. By 08h30, the dining room was becoming empty. By 08h45, the heaven's had opened and the gutters were filling up. I left the hotel and walked through the rain to buy some lunch. Having acquired suitable sustenance, I went off to hire a bike for the day. As before, my plan was, until lunchtime, to follow the Canal du Nivernais down to Cravant, have lunch, then carry on before turning round and returning to Auxerre - a modest 29 miles. And so, with the rain having stopped, I strapped my bag to the bike and cycled through the park and onto the main road, heading downhill alongside the Boulevard Vaubelle to the River Yonne. Following yesterday's breakfast with the masses, I made a conscious effort to ensure I was there early. 07h30 seemed a good time and I was relieved to find that I was the only guest in the dining room. By 08h15, I was still the only guest in the dining room - clearly, yesterday's UN resolution had been agreed and issued. After a leisurely breakfast, I left the hotel about 09h00 and headed into town to buy some lunch. Having a bag full of bread, I went off to hire a bike for the day. Not having ridden for about 15 years, this was going to be and interesting experience! After a really good night's sleep, I made my way to breakfast and entered a battlefield. A room full of Germans who would not let a lone Englishman sit in any vacant place. Not to be left standing, I grabbed a coffee and sat - awaiting the next UN resolution. Leaving the hotel after breakfast, I headed into town for a proper look. Originally settled by the Romans, many of the houses now reflect the 16th Century status, with many narrow streets and numerous half-timbered buildings. My trip around town took me to several shops in a vain attempt to purchase a walking map of the area - sadly, it was not to be, though I did manage a coffee! at 08h00, followed by walk around town (from 09h00) in an effort to purchase maps. Despite ... read more

Having arrived in London the previous evening, I was able to start this trip with the minimum of fuss, arriving at the Eurostar terminal an hour before the train was due to leave. Despite the queues, the positions in extremis once again proved the fastest route through security and passport control. Thus, five minutes after checking in, I was sitting on the far side watching my fellow travellers become more and more hassled. The journey to Paris was uneventful - probably because I slept much of the way, waking just before our arrival. My neighbour, however, seemed to spend the entire trip sitting side-saddle and staring out of the window, afraid to miss something! Heading through Gare du Nord, I headed straight to the RER where, without any planning, a train was waiting. Leaving immediately, two ... read more
