After leaving Parnu, the next stop was Latvia, stopping at the Latvian border at 13h50 for coffee. On crossing the border, the quality of the roads worsened and, once in Riga, even the traffic lights became unphased resulting in a stop-start journey through Riga. Arrived in Riga at 16h00 but, due to badly parked vehicles, the coach was unable to get close to the hotel - an old Convent - and so I have had to walk dragging my suitcase. Leaving my bag in my room, I headed out to get some local currency, taking in the Dome, the Town Hall Square, St. Peter's Church and the Shopping Centre whilst out.... read more

Was heading south this morning so there was no dawdling and, after packing the suitcase, I went for an early breakfast. After checking out, I loaded my bags on to the bus and, carrying my 5L bottle of water, boarded. By 09h00, the bus was heading across Estonia for Parnu, known as Estonia's Summer Capital. With its leafy streets and pastel-coloured wooden villas, it's easy to see why this proved so popular with it's recent inhabitants - most of whom have returned eastwards! By 11h00, the bus was parked outside the Hotel Parnu and I had several hours in which to view the Red Tower (closed and white), the Tallinn Gate (open and pink) and St. Catherine's Church. I also managed to get to the beach via the Art Nouveau Villa Annende. Lunch was at a ... read more

After breakfast, left the hotel at 09h05 on a tour into eastern Estonia, more precisely, Lahemaa National Park. Established by the Soviets on finding a little known decree signed by Lenin that stated that National Parks were good, barbed-wire was immediately put up and, being so good, local were excluded and military personal enjoyed the scenery for almost fifty years. It was raining when I left Tallinn and it was raining when I arrived in Viitna shortly after 10h00. Once dressed for the rain, I set off for a walk around the lake. Hardly had I left the bus than I was being attacked by mosquitoes - not two or three, but twenty or thirty at a time. The views around the lake were spectacular, but spoilt by the constant biting. Moving on, I went to ... read more

After a breakfast of muesli and yoghurt, washed down with bacon and "egg", I left the hotel and walked through town to the Kaubamaja Centre to look at buying a ticket to Helsinki. Decided that the 47€ return was too expensive so made my way through the shops to the tram stand, and waited for the number 3 to Kadriorg. This beautiful part of town comprises traditional wooden houses. So I started by the Swan Lake and paused at Kreutzwald's statue, before heading off to the Kadriorg Palace. Unfortunately, this was closed for renovation from today until end 2012! I therefore moved on to the Presidential Palace, Peter the Great's Cottage and the Kumu Art Museum. This latter proved to be rather interesting, particularly the only floor I managed to see which covered Estonian (i.e. Soviet) ... read more

Slept through the alarm this morning, waking up over an hour later. But, after a leisurely breakfast, left the hotel at 09h45 and headed into town. Walked to Freedom Square and up to Toompea Hill, stopping quickly at the Cathedral and Parliament building before joining the cruise ship clients at the Patkull Viewing Platform. Descended to the Town Hall via the steps and went off to buy a Tallinn Card. Back in the main square, immediately used the card and went up the Town Hall Tower. The rather narrow, steep and dark stone spiral staircase was interesting but the views from the top were incredible - even to one afraid of heights! I then went off to lunch at the Kiek in de Kok, before heading off to the Hotel Viru to join an official sightseeing ... read more

Wasn't expecting to come on this trip! Within a few hours of receiving a phone call, I'd packed and arrived at Manchester Airport in preparation for the flight to London and on to Riga and Tallinn. Today was just a day to look around ... the pictures tell the story!... read more

It teemed. Like stair-rods. No wind, just water. Everywhere. The camera didn't come out in the rain, instead, the water came in. Six to eight inches of water everywhere. Lost the numberplate off the car - almost lost the car! At the end of the day, the rains lessened - enough for a photo. Just two.... read more

In what turned out to be the best day of the week, I decided to head up the Scarth Gap and on to High Crag, across Comb Crags to High Stile, and ultimately along Chapel Crags to Red Pike and down to Bleaberry Tarn. It was a good choice. The sun shone and it was warm. Just twenty four hours later and a month's worth of rain would fall and there would be severe flooding.... read more

Once again, over Honister Pass towards Keswick, but this time, down a little road towards Stonethwaite. Parking in a lay-by just before the village, I left the car and walked towards the village, crossing a bridge and joining the Cumbria Way. Recent rain made the ground extremely sodden though, crossing another footbridge, made Gallen Force somewhat spectacular! Stopping for a quick coffee under Eagle Crag, I turned off the Cumbria Way and started following Langstrath Beck. At head, I stopped at Tray Dub for lunch. In the wide, almost barren valley, it proved to be an exception choice as, in the little gorge, I was out of the chilling wind. Sated, I crossed the footbridge and started the return journey on the other side of the beck.... read more

After a 20 minute drive over the Honister Pass, I set off from the Rosthwaite car park, heading west to a walled track which ultimately led to a footbridge over the Derwent. Whilst the river was not high, the ground was a little waterlogged and the midges and mosquitoes were having a field day. Following the river, I arrived in High Hows Wood and the site of a disused quarry. The cave just off the path was once someone's home although that individual would have to have been very hardy to stand the weather of late. Continuing along the path, I came out at Gowder Dub, where Broadslack Gill meets the Derwent. This beautiful open stretch of water provided a welcome coffee stop, ducks playing in the rough water. Coffee over, I took the footpath towards ... read more
