I could get used to this sleeping in a bed again, although last night's drinking session with the guide did result in me getting up a little later than planned!!! However, with it being Freedom Day here in South Africa, I anticipated on everyone being late. Sure enough, breakfast was a little later than of previous and we didn't leave until about 09h30. It was a short drive through the relatively quiet streets to Table Mountain where the day's activities were to take place. Although it was still relatively early and although it's officially autumn, it was already warm when we arrived at the cable car station at the bottom of Table Mountain. We'd been told to bring water and a hat and I'd decided not to take the camera today. Getting out of the Big ... read more

Breakfast at 08h00; luxury! Walk downstairs, through the kitchen and into the garden; luxury! Almost as good as having breakfast in the bush! Although we're in Cape Town, there will be a bit of travelling today as we're going around the peninsula. As always, we set of on time and started the journey by driving passed a number of retirement homes. Bantry Bay, Clifton and Camps Bay were ticked off - all very nice properties perched on the cliffs on very nice beaches. Continuing, we went on though Llandudno and on to Hout Bay, which got its name from the wooded, sheltered valley where ships could be repaired. Now Hout Bay is a major fishing area. Stopping to pay a toll, we began probably the most spectacular part of the peninsula tour - Chapman's Peak Drive. ... read more

Last night, an Afrikaans Wedding Reception was taking place, so the heavily advertised rules regarding noise and alcohol were waived. Apparently, the music was going on way past midnight, although I was oblivious! This morning, Sunday, the silence was broken at 07h00 by some Afrikaaner kid running around shouting “Get Up!”. So, we did. Washing, dressing and, seeing as this was the last morning (for some) with the tent, brushing them out and letting them dry before packing them. Consequently, we were not fully packed until 09h15, over an hour longer than normal! We drove the few short miles into Franschhoek, the town we'd not had a chance to view yesterday. Parking at the top of the town, we had the opportunity to walk down the main street at a leisurely pace. The French Corner came ... read more

After the heavy rain of the night before, last night turned out to be much warmer - and drier, though the waves were just as active. I was awake and out at 05h40 although the others should have been up at 05h30. Washing, dressing and going through the usual routine of dismantling the tent and taking breakfast took just over an hour and at 07h00 precisely, we were pulling away from the camp site. During the evening, half of South Africa had checked in and all the sea front sites were now occupied. Climbing up the minor road, we returned to the N2 (towards Cape Town) and we crossed the Storms River bridge in the early morning light, mist filling the deep valley below us. Sadly, there were no budgies throwing themselves off what is reputed ... read more

With the rain beating down, we'd retired to the tents at about 20h30 last night and battened down the hatches. With everything secure and away from the sides of the tent, I climbed into the sleeping bag and snuggled down. The wind battered the tent and the rain came from the south, then from the west and then vertically down! All the time, the waves smashed into the rocks just yards away. I slept well, waking at 06h00 in preparation to go back to the suspension bridge before breakfast and take some photographs. However, it was still raining, so I just went back to sleep. At 07h00, the weather had changed; the rain had gone and sunshine was beginning to reach the ground. Grabbing some clean clothes, a donned a waterproof and headed off for an ... read more

Last night, Jerry excelled himself on the camp fire and produced the most tender, red steak you could imagine. Served with cheese potatoes, salad and two bottles of Pinotage, it was probably the best meal of the trip so far. Awoken by Maxwell at 06h00, I was still dreaming of the food. It had been a real pleasure to be back in the tent and I'd slept like a baby. Now it was time to get up, wash, dismantle the tent, pack the truck, eat breakfast and get on the road. So proficient were we that we were leaving the Elephant Park 15 minutes ahead of schedule along some very bumpy roads indeed. Although the dawn had been beautiful, dark clouds were gathering to our right as we bounced along. To our left, the clear weather ... read more

I didn't sleep too well last night, probably because I was in a big brass bed, in a bedroom, with three other rooms all to myself. It took me a while to get to sleep, even though I went to bed some three hours later than of recent. I'd also set the alarm for 07h30 so that I could get a quiet breakfast before we had to pack and leave by 09h30. However, I was awake at 05h30 and cold - longing for my sleeping bag, hard floor and tent!!! I didn't wait for the alarm. Instead I was up at 06h00 and pottering, opening the curtains and the windows. I walked down the road to take my breakfast and was led into a side room where the head-waitress insisted in stating the obvious with regard ... read more

Whilst I've really enjoyed the mountains, the others found it a little cold. Huddled in their coats at 06h15 going to the washing facilities, I returned from those same facilities with just a towel over my shoulders (but wearing trousers!). Breakfast was quick with hot coffee, bread and a malaria tablet and, with little to pack, we were away in the cool morning air by 07h00. The early morning views from the road to the top of the pass were spectacular. Golden sun shone on the golden grass whilst autumnal colours began to get a hold on the poplars dotting the high valley floor. Mist lay in little dips in a vain attempt to hide from the sun. Heading to Van Rooyens Gate, we joined a short queue of people wishing to exit Lesotho and a ... read more

Yesterday was Joke's birthday so we'd all retired to the bar last night, listening to African music and celebrating her 21st birthday (again). This morning I was woken at 07h30 by the sounds of ululation coming from the village followed by the voices of children singing. It was very magical to wake up to what is imagined to be traditional African sounds. After washing and taking breakfast, we looked at the weather and, donning warm jackets and waterproofs, waited for our ponies to arrive for today was intended to be a long walk into the Lesotho mountains with a Basotho guide.. Paul (not his real name?) sauntered down the path at the relaxed pace of the Basotho, blanket wrapped about him and hat sitting jauntily on his head. In his arms, he carried two waterproof bags ... read more

Last night, I had dry bread for my tea, whilst the others supped their white wine and ate Porterhouse Steaks. However, it was my decision to have the bread. During the meal, lightening provided a backdrop and, shortly afterwards, the rain started. We retired rather quickly to our tents where, for the next 9 hours, heavy rain and strong winds rocked the canvas. However, I believe we all slept. The 05h30 call came as a surprise, as I'd clearly slept well. On hearing the wind and rain though, I decided it best to pack what I could before venturing out. Thus it was that my sleeping mat, rucksack, sleeping bag and pillow were all piled against the tent door before I went for a wash, ready to load into the bus. Feeling much better, I carried ... read more
