When we got to Anchorage, we met up with old friends of Ed's from the Wailer's. Noel and Sue Janda have a beautiful home that they invited us to stay at. When we arrived, we found out we were headed out early the next morning for fishing. We went down to the Kenai Penisula and met up with some of thier friends. JB took us out on his boat trolling for King salmon. We did not have any luck, but the river was beautiful. There were numerous Bald Eagles. When we got back to shore, JB taught me how to use a fly rod. The next morning, Ed and Noel went out on a boat with Ron to "set net". The locals are allowed to "net" fish for a one week period. It was very rough. ... read more

A few days ago we headed to Valdez, Ak. Yes, we all know what happened in Valdez... It is the terminus of the Alaska pipeline that starts in Purdhoe Bay. There is not really much to do in Valdez. But, we went because we heard of a cool kayak tour. We kayaked on the Valdez Glacier Lake. There was just the tour guide and us. We kayaked on the glacier lake, into ice caves and walked on the Glacier. The photos can not really show the immensity of the glacier, cracks, caves and puddles. The ice was crystal clear and the melted water was turquoise blue. It was an incredible experience. I really likes the kayak and I might try it some more when get back to Big Bear. That evening I was walking over to ... read more

The McCarthy road spans 59 miles, from the Copper River to the Kennicott River. It follows the roadbed of the Copper River and Northwestern Railway which was built in 1908. The road is surrounded by the 12 million acre Wrangell-St Elias National Park. The Kennicott Copper mine was one of the richest and most profittable through the 1940's. We drove the McCarthy road, visiting both McCarthy and Kennicott. We took a fightseeing tour over the Wrangell-St Elias Park, which covered numerous glaciers. We flew mostly at 7,000 feet . The tallest mountain, Mt. Blackburn was over 15,000 feet. We were so close, it felt like you could reach out and touch the glaciers. By air is the only way you can see many of these Glaciers. After the incredible flight, we toured the Copper Mill in ... read more

We went on the wonderful cruise tour. We left Skagway and went into Haines. The photos pulling into the Haines harbor are some of my favorites. We saw several humpback whales, sea lions and Bald eagles. We had 3 hours ashore in Juneau. We went to the State Capital. but Sarah wasn't there. Back on the ship for more whale and glacier watching. A wonderful 9 hour tour. The next morning we had to catch the ferry at 5:45. We crossed the channel over to Haines, drove on in to Haines junction to see if we could get tickets to the Blue Grass festival, no luck. We went to a bakery for a Salmon Bake where one of the bluegrass bands was playing. Next day, we got back on the Alaska highway. What a bumpy road! ... read more

We left the Hot Springs and drove back into ALaska. The terrain steadily changes, so sdoes the weather. Coming over White Pass into Alaska, it was socked in and very wet and cold. The lakes were still full of ice and lots of snow on the mountains. Once we got out of the pass and back to the coastline, it is much warmer. How do you like the great photo of Scratch"In" Alaska? Skagway is a cruise ship town. That means when the boats are in, the town is crawling with tourists. Not really our kind of place. But, we can not catch the ferry to Haines until Friday . We are taking a cruise trip down to Juneau tomorrow. It is a Glacier Tour. They spotted 7 humpback whales a couple of days ago. Our ... read more

We spent the last couple of days in Atlin. A Historic Gold Rush town, right on the water. We had the penthouse campsite. Right on the point, overlooking the bay. It was 75 miles of partially paved road. This keeps away most of the tourists. There weere several historic buildings from the early 1900's still in use. We were lucky enough to have dinner at the new, and only, restaurant in town. They had a Prime Rib special taht was some of the best Prime Rib that we have had in a long time. Then we went to a BlueGrass performance at the newly restored Globe Theater. Great musicians, harmony and very funny. We finished the night with a beer at the local tavern. A perfect evening! I am attaching a photo of the sunset at ... read more

We arrived in Dease Lake and decided it wasn't worth the time. So we set out for an adventurous side trip. We drove 80 miles on a dirt road to Telegraph Creek. We camped at a First Nation fishing camp. The water was too high for the fishing to be any good, so we were the only ones there. We camped a few feet away from where the Dodjatin Creek joined the Stikine river. Both rhe creek and the river were running so fast, we watched entire trees being swept downstream. We were surrounded by Nature's music: the running water flowing downstream, the wind blowing through the leaves of the quaking aspens, the caw of the birds nesting in the canyon walls and the ocassional buzz of a hummingbird or bee buzzing from wildflower to wildflower. ... read more

This will be a short blog. I want to mostly share photos with you. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words! We spent a couple of nights in Prince Rupert. Today we drove on to Hyder, AK/ Stewart, BC. They are both on the border. Hyder is a bit of a disappointment, we are here too early. But, again, what a drive! Take a look at the picture of Ed trying to teach Scratch how to cheat at cards!... read more

We finally got to sleep in this morning. No Alarm, and we were still up at 8:00. I don’t get it, but we are sleeping like 10 hours a night. I made black out curtains for the bed area and that help tremendously. It is getting dark around 10:00 and light at 4:00am. We had a leisurely drive into Hazelton, BC today. We are spending the night at a reservation campground. The tribe’s museum is right next door and we will do a tour in the morning. We took some pictures today that I have to share with you. The first is from a rest stop where the center stone in the cairn is from the castle where supposedly King Arthur, of the round table, was born. There are so many beautiful rest stops. It is almost 9:00 and it is so light that you could sit outside and read the paper. It gets dark around 10:30 and light at 4:30 am. We got the camper fixed, and back on the road. The photo is actually a wonderful rest stop wher we had lunch. The roads are great, lots of passing lanes and rest stops. We saw our first Brown Bear today! But the big news is we were stopped at a liquor store, this guy came up and asked if we would be willing to do a "tagline" for thier TV station. So Ed is now a TV star! Luckily, we had put the beer away already! I made my first grocery store trip in Canada. Wow, what produce! and great prices too. The only thing is you have ... read more
