After taking a couple days to dry out and catch up on some rest, we headed to Homer Alaska. Homer is known for the "Spit", a piece of land that sticks out five miles from the peninsula, and the Halibut derby. We found a great camping spot on the beach at the end of the spit. We camped right on Kachemak Bay with a view of 5 glaciers across the bay. The first night we walked along the shore and saw a sea otter floating a few feet away. We had dinner on the beach and enjoyed the view. The next day, we took a sightseeing cruise. First we went to Gull island. There is a large rookery there with horned and tufted puffins, red-faced cormorants, several kinds of gulls and bald eagles. The boat took ... read more

Now I know how the old man in the nursery rhyme felt about the rain leaking throgh his roof. We made our way to Seward, AK. We lucked out and got a waterfront camping sight, and that was the last of our views. It was lightly drizzling when we got there. Followed by a downpour that lasted almost 20 hours before we left. Now mind you, it was still pouring when we left and probably still is. The roof leaked something terrible! So we canceled our tour boat and high tailed it out of town. It seemed like as soon as we hit the town limits, the rain stopped. We headed over to the Kenai and just laid low for a couple of days. We of course played cards last night. It is uncanny how much ... read more

We made another trip over the Top of the World Highway, from Dawson City on the banks of the Yukon River, back into Alaska. It is a mostly dirt road, with high climbs and decents, along with the requiste hairpin turns. One of the highlights of the road is the quaint town of Chicken. The town consists of three restaurants that are a must see for the ALaskan traveler. I drove the first half of the trip into Chicken, then we powered on into ALaska and half the way to Anchorage. The next day we finished the drive back to Anchorage. We are over 8500 miles now... The unique thing about the roads up here is the permafrost. There is a constant layer of ice (frost) over which the ground defrosts a few inches during the ... read more

We spent the day touring Dawson City. We did a walking tour done by Parks Canada. It was very interesting. There are 12 building in town that have been restored by the Park Service. We went into the orginal bank, Post Office and Saloon. I got some great photos! Then we went to dinner at a really good Greek restaurant. We drank a sourtoe cocktail. The picture you see is an actual "dead toe". You take a shot of scotch and drop the toe in it and drink it. Yes, we did it. And I am paying for it today!... read more

There are so many things that I will remember about the Great Northern Arts Festival. The art was varied and impressive. We were able to watch the native artists working on beadwork, yarn, painting and stenciling. There were carving tents to watch the stone, antler and bone carvers. We were able to see several pieces in differnet stages of the creative process. Friday night we attended the ArtCirq. It is a circus performed by members of a small communtiy in Igloolik. It was very entertaining! On Saturday I attended a workshop on Digital Photography. I look forward to doing some unique things with the pictures form our trip.... read more

We made it back to Fairbanks for a couple days to recoup. We wanted to get to the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, so we drove like crazy to get here.... We went almost 400 miles the first day from Fairbanks to Tok, over the Top of the world Highway To Dawson City. Took the ferry across the river and spent a night in Dawson. We got on the Dempster highway, unsure of what to expect. After the experience on the Dalton Highway, we got new tires and hoped for the best on our next 500 mile dirt road. The roads were in very ggod shape and we made good time. We spent the night at almost the 1/2 way point in Eagle Plains. What a great surprise! The food was very good and the ... read more

We set out on Weds. morning for the Dalton highway and Deadhorse/Purdhoe Bay. The highway is 415 miles of mostly dirt. If there was pavement, the dirt road was in better shape. It rained almost the entire way up, which made the roads really trecherous. We stopped the first night to camp at the Arctic Circle. But, just as we set-up camp a worker came along to trim the brush. This brought out so many mosquitos, we had to move. We camped by Prospect Creek (which has the record for the lowest temp. in Alaska). During the night, it rained and the camper started to leak again. You can see where this story is going... The next day, we had a blow-out 25 miles north of Coldfoot( The only gas station on the highway) several people ... read more

We spent a couple of days at Chena Hot Springs Resort. There was a wonderful big, adult only pool. The water was nice and warm! Then on to Fairbanks. Okay, follow this: Ed's Daughter Dana is married to Hansel. Hansels parents, Wayne and Marijo Larson live in Fairbanks. We arrived on Friday July 3. We went out that night to the Pioneer Park and went to the Salmon Bake. All you can eat Salmon, Halibut, Cod and Prime Rib. Wow! Then we went to a show at the Palace Theater. July the 4th we went over to join the rest of the family for a barbeque. The girls had made a slip and slide for the kids. It was a great day. Unfortuneately, the fires in the area caused there to be a lot of smoke ... read more

We left Anchorage and headed to Denali National Park. We went through the town of Wasilla, home to Sarah Palin. It is a very pretty town. We checked out the Iternod Museam. They had some very nice displays. I found a road that we hadn't heard about, Petersville Road. It was a 20 mile dirt road to an old roadhouse. It was a beautiful drive, but the road was pretty rough. On to Denali... We spent 2 night in Denali and went on a tour on of the days. We could not see Mt. McKinley due to clouds. However, we did see alot of wildlife. A Grizzly bear with 2 cubs, severval hers of dall sheep, 20+ caribou, A large male moose , bald eagles and a golden eagle. We backtracked a little to the ... read more

We have spent the last several days with Noel and Sue at thier home in Anchorage. We have enjoyed taking the time to unwind from the road trip. After our fishing trip, we have decided to rearrange the trip. We are going to leave here and head towards Inuvik. That is at the end of the Dempster Highway, 500 miles of dirt road(1000 if you count round trip). We went Downtown the other day and visited the museam. Yesterday we drove out to the small town of Hope Alaska. It is across the bay from Anchorage. By the way, when you look at the Glacier pictures, it is not mounds of dirt. The ice flows down and pushes the rock and dirt ahead of it. As the glacier recides, the ice is covered in a thin ... read more
