Our main purpose in CO Springs was to visit my aunt and uncle and one cousin and her family. This was the first time for our kids to meet them, and the first in a long time for me to visit with them. It was really great to catch up, to hear about their work, life, and ministry there. They were so generous to let us stay in their home for a few days, to make meals for us, to let us make a Chinese meal for them, and to take us to see great places, including Charis Bible College, Focus on the Family's Whit's End, Garden of the Gods, and the mountain-side zoo! Besides drinking one of Whit's wodfamchocsods or feeding giraffes, we also visited the Air-force Academy and climbed Pulpit Rock. We were very ... read more

We are now officially American. In order to break up our drive from Texas to Colorado Springs, we “camped” in Trinidad, Colorado. But here's the thing, we didn't just camp, we Walmart camped! We had heard of this true blue kind of camping online, and felt we wouldn't be true Americans if we road-trip across America without doing this. Arriving in Trinidad right before sundown, we located the local Walmart, found the row of Rvs parked on the far side of the parking lot and pulled our van inbetween. It felt like we were pioneers, traversing a new-found land, and circling up our wagons for protection through the night...in some strange, modern sort of way. So after perusing the aisles of Walmartville, Dad treated the kids to a real American dinner—Chef Boyardee. Mmm. After our dinner ... read more

Due to car repairs we had to cancel our ambitious plans to drive down to San Angelo to visit a friend. Nevertheless we still got to spend a night in the “Lone Star State.” We drove into the panhandle, the northwest section of the state, to a city named Amarillo. Kind of sounds like “armadillo” which we never did see, although we did see a road-runner run, and tumbleweed tumble! Anyway, as we drove through Texas we were amazed by the ability to see for endless miles. I mean, we thought Oklahoma was flat, that was nothin'! In order to experience Texas in its fullness, and to live out it's claim to “do everything big,” we went to a famous restaurant called the “Big Texan.” Their claim to fame is a free 72 oz steak dinner, ... read more

We drove through New Mexico bound for Colorado. Following the Santa Fe trail, used long ago for trading with the Native Americans, we came to a rather small town with a rather small welcome center. The man inside told me that in the 1800s his grandfather from Wales had immigrated to a town in PA, called Germantown. Due to lung disease his grandfather was sent to New Mexico where he began a wool trading business, bringing top-quality wool from Germantown to trade with local Indians along the Santa Fe trail. As we traveled further north, we were surprised to see random roundish mountains appear along the plains. According to the information we had gathered in the welcome center, these mountains were volcanic in origin. By about 5 o'clock we neared Crater Rim, a larger volcano with ... read more

Balaam's Beast, our awesome wheels for the journey, acquired some new spark plugs and wires in Lynchburg, VA thanks to the great guys at Integrity Auto (www.integritywheels.com). However, there was still a slight miss (one of the cylinders in the engine doesn't fire) under idle that disappeared as soon as any load was put on the engine. When we broke camp in Arkansas the miss now also appeared at times under when in motion. As we progressed onto Oklahoma, the miss became more and more pronounced and we struggled to maintain the speed limit on each slight rise in the highway. By the time we were about 150 miles out it was clear that one cylinder was no longer firing. We called ahead and our brother-in-law was able to arrange a family technician to look at ... read more

Enter Oklahoma. Suddenly trees are shorter, and the weather was very windy and very warm. We are loving each state with all its uniquenesses and adventures! Our best adventure in Oklahoma City was long conversations with our sister and brother-in-law and going to see their work, building projects, and the distinctions of the city. He grew up just a bit north in Guthrie, the original capital of Oklahoma and was able to really fill us in on many of the interesting history of this great State and city. Not only that, they also filled us with some really GREAT food! Excellent BBQ, tremendous breakfast, and an amazing Mexican lunch! However, Rob did underestimate the size of platters in the USA. Unable to decide one of us went for the sampler platter. It was HUGE … and ... read more

After leaving our friends in TN we drove to Little Rock, Arkansas, our first try at a KOA campsite. Leaving behind the Smoky Mountains and cool, cloudy weather, we crossed the Mississippi River to find long stretches of beautiful farmlands under bright blue skies. We stopped at a Welcome Center where the friendliest ladies loaded us down with information about Arkansas, the kids even got coloring books. I was in love with Arkansas already! (And I wasn't too keen on going there.) The KOA campsite was nice, clean, and we rolled out our tent. After a meal of BBQ pulled-pork sandwiches at a local dig we climbed into our sleeping bags and slept happily...and woke, well, early (as all good campers do)!... read more

We rolled 90,000 miles on the van we are borrowing, whom we affectionately have named Balaam's Beast. If you are unfamiliar with who Balaam, or his beast is, check out Numbers 22-24 or trusty Wikipedia: . After about 2,000 miles into our journey it is our desire that the Lord take us right where we should go and if we need to slow down, adjust our route, or just plain listen more carefully to God's voice that we would measure any troubles with “Balaam's Beast” as an opportunity to look to God in prayer ;) 90,000 miles conveniently passed right at a rest stop! How awesome is that? Then we all got out, stretched our legs by running some races through the pines of Tennessee! ... read more

The day that we drove from Charlotte, NC to Knoxville, TN we made a stop to see the Billy Graham ministry's retreat center nestled in the wooded mountains. Unfortunately due to security we couldn't see much of the grounds except for the chapel containing photos and highlights from Billy and Ruth Graham's lives. It was amazing to think of the hundreds of thousands of people around the world who have been influenced by Billy Graham's preaching and their son, Franklin's ministry to the impoverished. It was exciting to read of the faith of Ruth, who went to be with Jesus several years ago, and to imagine the great reward that she met there. Not much longer into our drive that day, we saw signs for the Biltmore mansion. Thinking that we probably won't pass through this ... read more

We have had a great time driving through the rolling hills, seeing the beautiful whites, purples, shades of orange, and spring greens on the trees lining the highways. We've enjoyed seeing the expanding campus of Liberty U in VA, the history of Billy and Ruth Graham's work at The Cove in NC, our friends treating us to a day at Dollywood in eastern TN, and touring Vanderbilt campus and the home of country music in Nashville. Yet visits with friends have undoubtedly been the greatest highlights of all!... read more
