After a cold night's sleep in the van (at a KOA, not Wal mart...yay, showers!) we woke up to frost on the inside of our windows. A hot shower felt great! We left for our next destination: Mt Rushmore. On our way we made an impromptu stop at a veteran's cemetery with fields of white tombstones that could be seen from the road. The pristine green grass and the manner in which the two men working in outside stopped their work and removed their hats as a funeral procession drove increased our sense of respect for those who served our country in this way. After walking up and down a few rows a man who was a Vietnam veteran stepped out of his car to pay his respects to friends and acquaintances. He shared with me ... read more

We stopped at a small-town diner 1 hour from today's destination, parking among the pick-up trucks. Everyone inside gave us that “you're not from around here” kinda' glance, but were all as friendly as could be. Tummies full, we moved on. Not long after we could see Devil's Tower protruding in the distance, a strange sight to see. Native American legend tells that as 7 sisters ran away from a bear they came to a rock or tree that rose to lift them high off of the ground. The bears clawed at the sides of the mountain unable to reach the girls at the top but the girls continued to be safely lifted until they became a group of stars. The walk around the bottom of the tower was even more fun that its legend. Because ... read more

Cows. Pick up trucks. Land. Antelope. Land. It is perhaps this simplicity that is causing my city-boy husband to long to make his home on this range. This day was a sad day for my sister and brother-in-law, we'd appreciate your prayers for them. As we drove along this beautiful land listening to our Bible reading for the day I continued to think of and pray for them. “Christ Jesus, who died-more than that, who was raised to life-is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (Romans 8:34-5)... read more

We passed briefly through Idaho, the narrow northern part of the state, on our way to Montana. Montana, nicknamed The Big Sky State, does seem to have a big sky. Even with the snowy Rocky Mountains, the land appears to be so open, natural, and sparsely populated that everything seems to be a bit bigger. Due to its bigness, we split our drive to Yellowstone up by staying a night in Bozeman, a particularly cute town with a really nice, big library and a big SuperWalmart with a nice big parking lot. So that's where we spent our time...and our night. The next morning we awoke to find ourselves in a van covered with snow! Now we had done our research and already knew that Yellowstone is still mostly closed even at the end of April ... read more

I can't believe we are in the farthest northwest state in the continental USA! Here, in a suburb of Seattle, we spent a 4-day Easter weekend with a family of friends who had lived in Beijing for several years. The kids had a blast being with other kids and renewing friendships. Our younger kids taught them how to play “Pablo” while our oldest had lots of laughs with their oldest who shares a mutual sense of witty humor. We also enjoyed reconnecting and being with people who know the struggles and joys of life abroad and being “Third Culture.” We loved sharing in their interests as they took us out for 2 days of field trips to the Boeing Museum of Flight, and the Seattle Science Museum. We also watched some of their kids' creative home-videos ... read more

Here we are at the end of the Oregon trail! Can I just say again, “America is beautiful!” Snow-capped mountains, fields of green, budding trees, clean air. Aaaah. We spent a night with another couple of friends who make frequent trips to China to encourage and serve. It has been such fun to see friends whom we've met on the far side of the Pacific in their America-homes on this side of the Pacific! It has also been great to make these stops to visit, and have a home-cooked meal and a warm bed. Our friends treated us to a walk across the road to a grassy playground and walk around their small town. Coming from a major metropolis in China, a small-town walking tour is a delight! The stream running through town is home to ... read more

From S. California we drove up I-5, central state, passing long stretches of grapevines, rolling green hills, and sheep. Quite different from the dry rocky hills of the southern desert. Mid-afternoon we arrived at Yosemite National Park and at once were enthralled by the towering pine trees surrounding us. We drove tight curves embanked by several feet of snow to one side and long pine covered hills dropping off the other side. We stopped to stomp through the snow to see the Mariposa Grove. Paths alongside clear, cold streams racing over rocks led us to the majestic Giant Sequoias. Pictures just can't do these beauties justice, they were truly majestic. On the way to the valley where we were to camp the next two nights, we passed El Capitan and Half Dome, rock cliffs that the ... read more

Before we left Arizona for the west coast we made a stop in Flagstaff for a little replacement on our had-been taped up muffler. And what a place to do it—on route 66! Our new shiny part carried us across the desert of Arizona and California. We saw such a variety of cacti and desert flowers along the way. Our first stop in southern Cal was San Marcos near Escondido and San Diego. From the moment we stepped out of the car the fresh smells of grass and tropical flowers greeted us. We stayed with friends we'd met in China who have started Christian Audio and echristian (check them out online and download this month's free audio book: The Hiding Place by Cori TenBoom! ). We had a really fun visit with them, their two boys ... read more

When we entered Arizona we recalled the saying, “Whoever says the world is over-crowded has never driven across the United States.” I waited to hear that wild west whistle, but not even that was to be heard. Eventually we came across scattered worn-down trailers with a few Rvs or pick-up trucks by them. A few wild and thin horses grazed along the highways outside of wire fences. We noticed that most of the people we saw seemed to be of Native American descent and wondered if the area we were driving through was an Indian Reservation. Eventually we came upon parts of the highway that were dotted with roadside stands selling Navajo crafts, jewelry, and pottery. Eventually we left the warmer desert lands and rose into the higher grounds of the Grand Canyon. What a surprise ... read more

The home of Arches National park, land of incredible rock formations! We camped a night at the Moab KOA, from where we could see far off to one side the blue and purple snow-peaked Rockies and to the other flat-topped cliffs of reds and oranges. The kids played in the sand making birthday cakes for friends in China or hide-outs for toy scorpions. The night sky was beautiful and we've enjoyed seeing many stars that cannot be seen in Beijing. The next day we went to Arches, taking small kid-friendly hikes to see amazing balancing rocks, and enormous rock windows, arches, towers and cliffs standing dramatically along endless miles of rocky land dotted by scrubby trees and bushes and a few flowering plants. After our visit at Arches, we stopped for gas and Mr. Mechanic decided ... read more
