Airport bound, one night in the red light district and 24 or so hours Christmas shopping airport style! We arrive in Singapore airport a little exhausted and a little bit crazy from 18 or so hours stuck in an Indonesian airport! We decide we need a bed and find the cheapest place in Singapore is surprisingly the red light district, we weren’t paying by the hour though and got the room for the whole night! Shower, shave and slept like a baby, never felt so good to have a hot water shower before with water that didn’t smell of sewerage! We sleep for a good 12 hours straight and wake up refreshed and full of beans, we have 29 or so hours left till our flight so it’s back to the airport for some shopping and ... read more

We arrive at the airport, or at least we think we do… we got the airport train from the centre of KL and headed straight for the departure terminal, little did we know we were flying from a completely different airport?! So off we go to get a bus link to the other airport, on approaching the airport we are a little sad as it’s tiny in comparison to the one we just came from, meaning the departure lounge will be tiny too, so no cinema or bars for us!? On getting to the mini airport that is just for Air Asia we find Clare in McDonald’s, pretty much all westerners were congregated here! A few hours in the airport and off to Bali for diving, tanning and lazy beach days, yippee!! The first thing we ... read more

James & Helen’s few weeks of holiday time Back to Kuala Lumpur and China town to plan where to go next after Jay’s departure… We decide the only way to decide what to do is over a super delish Nandos. After the tastiest Nando’s ever to set us up we decide to head to a small fishing island on the west coast called Pangkor. The journey to Pangkor was pretty easy and I proved my dominance in the game of shithead several times over the journey! We spent a week of playing lots of shithead and conquering my fear of scooters and hiring one to get about on the island. The island is beautiful and very, very tranquil with no other westerners on the island, a bit strange but nice to relax and explore for a ... read more

The cleanest most well behaved country/city state in the world, western right down to Starbucks and KFC’s. Taxi to the Cricket ground in hope of a backpackers and a place to unload the bags… no such joy. We checked out the bible (Lonely Planet) and decided to walk to the YMCA which is noted as a cheaper option in Singapore, 10 minutes in and sweaty as hell we decide to hop in a taxi as we aren’t getting very far In the intense heat of midday sun. YMCA appears to be $150 Singapore dollars a night which is about 70 pounds a night in the queens! On to the next place… we decide to have a break in Starbucks with Ice Mocha Frappuccino’s! We leave Helen with the bags and me and Jay go on the ... read more

After the fun but worrying game of “Where’s Helen” we are well on our way to Penang, Georgetown. We are held at the border for longer than we would have liked though as one girl seems to have been deported and then got back in somehow and we had to wait for them to sort that mess out! Penang, Georgetown, on driving towards what I had in my head was an island like the ones in Thailand, not quite we were presented with! Georgetown is a metropolis with a huge mix of Indian’s and Chinese so hopefully lots of delish food but maybe not the beaches I was hoping for. Day 1 we chill out and have some drinks with some other travellers playing shithead and the usual. We find to Jay’s happy grin some Manchester ... read more

Back in Thailand for the third time in my life and I doubt it will be the last, the place has a way of pulling you back kicking and screaming! Koh San Road, again… meaning this time around we are well equipped to palm off the street sellers as seasoned travellers they seem to just leave us alone, either the smell or something gives them a hint!? On arriving it’s time for our western hit and off the American embassy, better know as McDonalds, followed the next day by a double meat Subway and I’m sure Jay snuck in a burger king or two whilst I snuck back onto the pad thai! Christmas coming early, well at least the shopping part off to the huge MBK shopping mall for all things presents! This was by far ... read more

Temples a plenty and Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge legacy can be seen everywhere, most noticeably at the S21 and Killing Fields where it’s hard not to remember that it was only 30 years ago that all this was going on. Pretty chilling and touching stuff, bones can still be seen inching out of the ground at the killing fields and blood can still be seen sprayed across walls at S21 where you can only imagine the horror those people who opposed Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge must have gone through. Prior to the history lesson we decided to rest our heads in the city according to the lonely planet the lakeside and city were much for muchness, WRONG! We found a place, reasonable price but nothing to do or see around us other than the ... read more

Were off to Nam boys, lock and load! Vientiane to Hanoi, should be easy… well, it should, shouldn’t it! Party of 6 set off at the early hours of the morning to the bus depo. Some confusion seems to be going on with our little guy and the bus people. More to the point where is our bus to Hanoi? Were told we can get onto a bus but it doesn’t mention on it that it is going to Hanoi, ok, we presume that it’s all sorted and are told to get on the bus. Off we go… 20 hours later were still in Laos and in a car park somewhere in the south about 300 or so miles from Hanoi, I think were ever further away than we were 20 hours ago. It all starts with a bus journey… the choices of the traveller, 2 days on a slow boat or 1 day on a bus?! We chose the later, for better or worse! 28 hours later and a few hundred miles from the Thai border we arrive at a bus station in Luan Probang. The 28 hour bus journey was hard work but we met lots of fellow traveller’s mainly as a westerner we were all shoved to the back of the coach behind the rice and many stool’s where more locals attempted to get a seat! Laos has some amazing scenery and is drastically different to much of Thailand, people live in small wooden huts on the side of huge hills claded in thick jungle. Mudslides seem to be a bit of a problem in Laos ... read more
