Hello all, Time to get political, we need our visa for our China teaching positions and will visit the embassy in Hanoi see what is involved......Well that was an ordeal, 2 copies of everything (including what we had for breakfast!) and we can only pay in US$ which poses a problem, no banks exchange VND to USD some new rule so we are off to the market to find a store who will. The embassy closes at 11am back tomorrow. On our return to the embassy i discover there are dress regulations and my casual tourist attire doesn't cut the mustard. So Lynne enters the building papers and copies and USD in hand ready to face bureaucracy at it's finest. 30 seconds later Lynne exits the building somewhere the advise we have received is not quite ... read more

Wow! What a city! The impact of this new culture has been incredible. Everywhere there is something to see. We went for a walk on the first day around the lake. I couldn't walk straight because I would see something new and walk towards it, get distracted with something else and walk in that direction. Dave had to walk behind me so that he wouldn't get bumped. Hanoi is exciting, colourful, noisy, beautiful. We have now been here for eight days. We have roamed the streets; seen the sights; and experience some of the best food. Everything they say about the food is right on. We have not had any problems. We have tried the street food, restaurant food and even the puff balls from a lady who carries them in 2 baskets from a bamboo ... read more

G'day all, We had an very long journey from San Jose. The flights were long and the layovers even longer. We had a stop for eight hours in Dallas and decided to take the train in to the city to check things out. The streets were near empty and the town is very sterile with little character. The only personality we found was the waitress that served us in one of the West End bar/restaurants. After not having much meat (actually I was craving a steak) in Costa Rica, it was a relief to find a true Texan bar that served up lots of food. Airline food still doesn't satisfy the taste buds. We enjoyed steak, ribs and large baked potatoes with all the trimmings... we were stuffed full. Had to walk it off through the ... read more

Hey everyone, This will be our last blog from Costa Rica. When next we write it will be from Vietnam, somewhere. Still not decided on whether we start in the north and work our way south or catch a train for Ho Chi Minh City and see the south and Cambodia first then head back north. I´d like to take the slow boat to Hong Kong from Halong Bay if possible at the end of the stay. But we´ll let you know anyway. Costa Rica is a small gem of a country. We arrived carrying left over stress from our lives in Oz but it did not take long for us to get in the groove of the Ticos and relax. Nothing has gone wrong for us. We have been very lucky. The people are lovely ... read more

THE TRAVEL GUIDE VERSION Cerro Chirripo is the highest peak in Costa Rica by only 6 metres to its neighbour. It forms part of the Cordillera de Talamanca Range. You can find it at the end of a 20km trail which by far is the most challenging hike in this country. It is also the most exclusive. Because of the sensitive nature of the environment only 40 people are permitted in the park at any one time. 30 places are for reservations in the busier season with only 10 set aside for the drop ins. In the off season it is easier to buy a ticket but you will need to expect the rain. There is not too much consistency in the advice given regarding this trek. But I'll try to set down what you should ... read more

We have just finished 2 weeks at Matapalo Town and Beach. This small community thrives on the tourist industry. As the tourist season is now over, the main source of income is from the few stray tourists and the volunteers of the ASVO turtle conservation project. During the day we helped repair and maintain the hatchery, and clean up around the common areas of the buildings. David was to repair the roof on the shelter outside the hatchery where the night duty teams sit. I would be up at odd hours of the night either to be part of the hatchery duty or on patrol. I preferred the patrol as it kept me awake. My first night patrol was fruitful with one green turtle and we took 73 eggs for the new nest in the hatchery. ... read more

Playa Flamingo and Brasilito Playa is spanish for beach. If you are looking for the touristy thing than Flamingo and Brasilito are for you. We passed through Flamingo and back to Brasilito as it was slightly less effected by tourists. Stumbled across Outback Jacks an aussie style restaurant and cabinas run by Dave the Kiwi while the aussie (real name is Dennis) who started the whole thing toured the states with an Aussie mobile BBQ show. I dont have a lot to say that is great about the beaches. Might be just because i have been spoilt with Australias white sand and coral coast lines but the volcanic sand is brown almost to the point of being black and rubbish I thought that maybe Santa Rosa may have been a odd one out but no all ... read more

Level 3/4 rapids.....living life on the edge! This was a day of fun and hard work. We set out at 9am and were paired up with other english speaking tourists. Once all the obligatory rules were out of the way we hit the water. Lynne was in the front seat (so strange) but apparently the power players are at the back which was my seat. We hit the first rough water and we all went wow! some one asked the guide what rating was that? The reply came '' Nothing, we havent hit the rapids yet, that was just some small rocks''. So after a big breath we resumed our stance on the edge of the boat. We are sorry there are not any action shots but it is hard to click and paddle at the ... read more

We returned to ASVO in San Jose to organise our next project in Matapalo and were offered to spend a week in Tortuguero at the ASVO house next to the national park. We jumped at the chance for a relaxing pace, no work, and cheaper accommodation and food for the week. Tortuguero is not just a quick bus ride. It takes two buses and a long boat to reach in approximately 5 or so hours. But as with everything we have done so far, the journey is part of the adventure. Once on the water, we travelled for about 1 hour along narrow canals and then onto wider rivers seeing crocodiles, fresh water turtles and birdlife all the way. We are dropped off at the national park entrance and have to walk about 200 metres to ... read more

Wow what a sight, We still have the car and we are heading for the Volcano. we will stop on the way and see the tourist place Santa Ellena, this is a place where the animals have left because too many people have cleaned up and sanitised for lack of a better word. the Zip line here is the only thing worth comming for but we enjoyed the one we did so we gave this a miss and just went on a big Sky walk where you just go on a hike and cross the vallies on a high suspension bridge. They were pretty rustick and lynne was weary of their weight loading but as usual we survived. We are less than 2kms from an active volcano. Let me make one thing clear the Observatory is ... read more
