Good morning from the Dolan estate outside Frankfurt Germany . They have a very nice house and we had a good night’s sleep. David did wake up once during the night because he could not feel the ship moving, but dismissed it and went back to sleep. We had a good day visiting with Mike & Sue, and their girls. Mike cooked a nice breakfast and then we gave Maggie the First Communion presents which we had brought for folks in St Louis. Then we all went to the base for Sunday morning mass. Sue and the girls stayed afterwards for a school function while Mike brought us back to their house. Mike and David tried to fix the suitcase but it is going to take a trip to the local hardware store on Monday (not ... read more

Hello from Merry Old England. We have docked at Southampton and this marked the end of the cruise. That is sad, but we are looking forward to the remainder of the adventures we have planned. But let’s keep this in order. FYI … Despite the minutes which Ray and Mary gave us, we could not get connected to the shipboard internet last night, so that entry has been delayed in being posted. We had to meet in the Wheelhouse Lounge at 7:00 this morning for disembarkation. So it was up early (even with the extra hour for being back in the UK) to finish putting everything in our remaining carry-on bags, and off to the Horizon Court for one more meal. There was also a question on our bill to be resolved with the purser before ... read more

Bonne jour from Le Harve France, where the time is an hour earlier than when you went to sleep last night. But we are comparatively young and can adjust quickly. Speaking of young, Happy (real) Birthday to Janet. We celebrated it on the ship a week ago but today is her real birthday. We did that because today is the last full day on the ship and we had a lot of things to get done today. Thanks to Ray and Mary Gillespie (one of our dinner-mates) who had excess Internet Minutes and made them available to us. When they get back home they can look at the blog and read about the remainder of our trip. Maybe someday we will run across them on another cruise – they are really nice people. This morning was ... read more

Hello from the port of Falmouth in Cornwall England. Today is going to be different for several reasons. First we are going on different tours for the first time in all our cruises, and this is a “tender port” (you get ferried to shore in a small boat instead of docking and going down the gangway). Also a little different today, we had a bright sunny day and reasonably warm weather. Falmouth claims to be the 3rd largest natural deep water port in the world (behind Sydney and Rio). Because it is so large, the tenders picked up passengers at the side of the ship and took us several miles to the docks in the port, where our buses were waiting. They used both ship’s lifeboats and some local excursion boats to get everyone back and ... read more

If this is Wednesday, then it must be Holyhead, or vice versa. First let us add a couple of items which were omitted from yesterday’s note. Our tour guide was named Cognac and the driver was Gilbert. They were both very good (Gilbert is also a guide when not being the driver) and probably were on equal footing with Paula from Rome (see last year’s blog). One of the things they pointed out early was all the housing units along the roadway. Until recently Scotland had more government funded housing than any other country in Europe. They refer to them as “public authorize housing for socially deprived people” – doesn’t that have a nicer ring to it than “tenement project”? Our tour this morning had to meet in the Princess Theater at 7:00 so we got ... read more

Happy Birthday to Patterson & Melody!!! They had a party on Sunday, but today is their actual birthday. Grandma brought the party invitation with their picture, and has been showing it to lots of people. So we are thinking of you both on your birthday. In honor of arriving in Scotland and the twin’s birthday we had our picture taken with a bagpipe player, since according to Tessa, Melody really likes the bagpipes. This is going to be a difficult BLOG to write. It was very interesting but we did so much that stuff is bound to be left out or reported incorrectly. But we will do our best to describe a really neat day. The ship arrived on schedule at 8:00 in Greenock Scotland. So we were up early for breakfast before our tour left ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin May 16th 2011

Hello from Dublin. We were not scheduled to arrive until about 10:00 this morning, so we got to sleep in and then have a nice sit-down breakfast in the dinning room. We arrived as scheduled and we got to watch “the docking” this time. The port of Dublin is a major commercial facility with the piers surrounded by large areas of containers stacked 3 or 4 high. It is far different from Cobh (not picturesque at all) where we were within easy walking distance of the shops in town. Today was definitely a long sleeve day. Yesterday’s sky was called over cast but today was definitely cloudy (more than just overcast) and there was a strong breeze blowing all day. The temperature only got to the mid 50s, so jackets were also needed for the shore ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Cork » Blarney May 15th 2011

Hello from Cobh (pronounced ‘cove’) Ireland. We arrived this morning right on time, with a nice smooth docking. We had left a 6:30 wake-up call (that’s 12:30 the night before in St Louis) so we would have plenty of time to get dressed and have breakfast before reporting to the main theater for our half-day tour to leave at 8:15. Our guide was named Theresa but apparently the driver did not have a name. We boarded the bus just a few feet from the gangway and drove through the little town of Cobh. The bus drove alongside the River Lee and through the center of Cork. Since this is Sunday morning, traffic was light in Cork and we moved along quickly. We traveled through the central city, with the guide pointing out many places and providing ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » North Atlantic May 14th 2011

Today there were gentle rolling seas, with a temperature of 58 degrees. It is a little cool with a moderate breeze when you are outside. However the pools were open again – just nobody in them. It is our last full day of sailing without a shore excursion, so we took advantage of the opportunity to replenish our clean clothes supply. There was no shortage today, but we just didn’t want to try do washing on a day when we were off the ship much of the day. We should have enough things to wear until we get off the ship. We hope Sue and Mike don’t mind if we show up with a lot of dirty clothes. This morning was a demonstration in the Princess Theater (not the kitchen) by the Master Chef of the ... read more

Happy Birthday to Janet (sort of). If you know her well enough then you know this is NOT really her birthday, but they don’t know that on the Grand Princess. Janet’s real birthday is next week, but we are very busy that day, so we are going to celebrate it today instead. Anyway, there were balloons stuck on the wall beside our cabin door this morning, so they certainly think it is her birthday. Last night was a bit more turbulent and the ride was still a little shaky during the morning. The weather was overcast and cloudy with it being fairly cool and windy outside. In the afternoon, the sun came out and warmed up to low 60s with a bit smoother sailing. By evening it was nice and smooth with just a gentle roll. ... read more
