First of all, GO CANADA GO!!!! YAY, I was so excited when we won gold!! I found an american style sports bar that was showing the game yesterday and got to watch it. All in spanish of course! It was amazing how many Canadians were in the bar. I would say about 75%. When we won, everyone started singing the canadian anthem. I was sitting with some American friends from school, so my table was pretty bitter. HAHA!! It was cool though! Also it was so wierd having everyone around me speaking english. Ive missed being able to eavesdrop :) Seeing the olympics, especially when your away from home makes me so proud to be Canadian. It also makes me miss being there. I would have loved to be able to be in Vancouver. BUT 3 ... read more

whoop whoop! I´ve made it half way through my trip...alive!! haha I sort of joke about that, because generally, SA is quite safe and people just hear stories and it gets blown way out of proportion. But I truly am grateful for the prayers and support that has gotten me this far. Im quite positive I wouldn´t be sitting in this internet cafe if it wasnt for my friends and family (even though you are all thousands of miles away). So thank you all very much! Lima... what to say... I love it! I know, I know, I say I love every city that i´m in, and I dont think I would like or appreciate this city as much if I had started my trip in Peru. Its definitly has its own flare and distinct culture, ... read more

South America February 9th 2010

So when I came to South America, I had a couple things on my list of ¨I REALLY want to do or see¨. One was go to Machu Pichu, which unfortunately, I think is out due to the mud slides. It wiped out lots of train track and paths, so I guess that just means I will have to come back in a year when its fixed. Another was go to Iguazu falls, and to see a soccer (football) game. I am lucky enough to have checked off 2 of my list of three. See a football match and Iguazu falls in the last 5 days has probably been some of the best days of my life. Most memorable anyways. So footballl....I really cant even start to describe how insane that game was! There was 5 ... read more

South America » Uruguay » West » Colonia del Sacramento January 31st 2010

I can honestly say that I never imagined myself going to Uruguay. Really, the name sounds like it would be a boring place or slightly ugly. Never judge a country based on its name, I can say that for sure! Such a beautiful and tranquil country!!! I went with 2 friends from school, and we stayed 2 nights in a hostel. It is neat because you can get to Uruguay via bus or boat. Clearly the boat is a much better way to travel! We just stayed in a small city and didn´t go to the capital or venture out to much. Colonia is really old and cute. Cobblestone streets and now it is just a place where people from the city go to relax for a weekend. It felt like I was in a movie ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 29th 2010

Crazy to think its been about a month since I left the great white north! I hear that it has been a great winter so far. That is good, but even though, im still happy to be on a different continent right now! So while I am travelling, I am trying to be open minded and try everything once. Even if it makes me uncomfortable or something i wouldn´t necessarily try at home. A couple days ago, Richard (a fellow student and roomate) somehow convinced me to go play soccer (aka football) with people from the school. He said that lots of girls play, and its just a weekly thing that the students can do if they want. Just kick around a ball a little bit. ok ok, I decide, well I am in Argentina...why not?? ... read more

So, Im onto the second part of my journey!! You think I would stop having expectations of how a city or country will be, because it always turns out to be 100% different. Argentina is so much different than Chile!! In the airport, I went into the bathroom, and it felt like i was surrounded by supermodels. So many pretty girls, and naturally very beautiful. It is refreshing to not be surrounded by fake beauty, like in kelowna for example. It was also nice to be on a flight and not fall asleep and wake up with a major stress attack! haha on the way to Chile, i think 5 of the 11 hours in the air, i was just telling myself to relax. So, needless to say, I think im getting more confident in my ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Providencia January 23rd 2010

So it's my last night in chile. Unreal how time flys by! I wish that I would have planned my flights a bit differently. Cause I'm always in class in the week and there hasn't been much time to see the south or north of chile. Apparently the south is unbelievably beautiful. So if I had to do it again, I would have booked two weeks of school and a week just to see the other parts. So that's my tip to anyone who has the foolish idea that they want to learn Spanish in SA. Haha right now, if I hadn't already paid, I would never go back to school to learn Spanish. Maybe that's just cause I am not gifted in languages. But nothing in life worth having comes easy. I'm pretty sure that ... read more

So I just thought this was very interesting, and thought I'd write a note because I guess that's what bloggers do! Yesterday was the election and I was just walking with some friends trying to find some food. Anyhow around 8:30, people started honking and waving flags etc. As the night progressed, so did the honking and chants and cheering. It's like how Vancouver would be if Canucks ever won a stanely cup! I guess the guy who won only did by 2% or 3%. I loved how the streets were full, traffic stopped due to the crowds just for an election. I was tempted to get a tshirt with the presidents name and join in! Mind you, my host family is quite against him, so that would have been interesting... Strolling in with a flag, ... read more

Sitting down and writing a blog slightly reminds me of writing an essay. I have no idea where to even begin. I should almost make an outline or something. Ooh wait, that is far too much organization and work! So lucky you, you get to read my ramblings! First off, Spanish is still my arch nemisis. Ok I am not sure what that means, and probably I spelt it wrong, but it's just out to get me! I have decided that my next goal in life will be easy. Like go sky diving before I die. Learning another language is quite the struggle. It reminds me of the tower of babel (from the bible :). But besides having a hard time, I'm loving it too. I find it so interesting to hear different languages and they ... read more

It's amazing how much one person can do in one week! It's also amazing how little one can do in a week. I remember some weeks passing by at home and realizing I actually did nothing! It's sad how easy it is to fall into complatency and not do anything new or different. But the beauty about realizing that, is today is the perfect day to start! Haha that's my new years 'resolution'. Cause I've got to come back to real life one day. BUT in the mean time, things are far from ordinary!! So my espanol is still just as bad as ever unfortunately. Well I can understand some things. A couple days ago in class the teacher (who will not speak English to us at all) was asking us to explain what the main ... read more
