I believe I've found paradise! Imagine being on an island where you can sit in a hammock looking at clear, turquoise water and white sandy beaches and the only sign of life is a stray dog walking by. I have never seen such beautiful beaches and so few people. There is a story about an American woman getting killed by a salt water crocodile a few years back (first I write how beautiful it is here, then drop that ugly story), but I almost think it was made up to keep people afraid and away. Truly, it is a hidden place, and people will say anything to keep it that way. Although, there actually are salt water crocodiles here and certain marshy areas I avoid... but that won't keep me from coming back here :) There ... read more

My last entry I said I was going to a cricket match, India vs. England. Obvious choice was to cheer for India, so me and some fellow travelers bought coloured paint, Indian flags, etc. Putting paint on my face, and drawing an Indian flag on my arms (which I put on upside down..oops) and getting the cheap local tickets lead to the most fun possible! Probably a moment in my life I will never forget was when me and a Swedish girl walk into the stands, trying to find a seat. It was totally packed, and as we stood in the entrance, people started noticing us. As far as I could see to my left and right, people were looking. Not just a glance either. We both just froze for a moment. Never have I had ... read more

The end of 2012... It had been such a difficult year in some ways, but so amazing also! I love new years and the start of a fresh calendar. Well, I dislike the last minute party plans and people making a huge deal out of NYE but I think it is important to take a moment to reflect on the past year and what you have accomplished. I remember a piece of paper I wrote with my goals that stared at me every day. If you don't make any goals, you certainly won't reach them. I set absurdly ridiculously huge goals...and guess what? If I had that little piece of paper with me right now, I could draw a line through everything I wrote down. That being said, ok, yes I wanted to travel for a ... read more

It's been 17 days in India... And every single one of those days has changed me in some way. It's like going to a gym and working out. You hurt, it sucks, you sweat and bleed (well depends on the type of work out you do :) but after a few weeks, you start seeing results... If I compare myself to that, I'm started to get really toned and fit! Unfortunately, the opposite goes for my body... Indian food seems to love me (ok, it's the other way around). I am grateful I can eat wheat and dairy because it's like an overload of naan bread, chapattis and lassi's (a yogurt drink). For not eating beef, they sure have perfected the cows byproducts! And so far, I've not eaten any meat and am loving it! I've ... read more

As I sit waiting for the train (its about 11pm) my emotions are overwhelmed. I wonder if I will ever get used to feeling like this. Mind you, it has only been 5 days in India, but it already feels like a lifetime. Could be because I am utterly alone and just had to walk through about 30 people all laying on the floor in the train station (unsure if they were beggers or homeless...i couldnt stop to look). In the past 2 months, I really have never been alone or stretched as much as I have in the past 5 days. I don't know whether to cry or laugh at this moment. I've been asked countless times 'oh who are you traveling with' or 'are you alone' or 'where is your husband'. I've taken to ... read more

I've been in India a whopping 3 days, and have probably spent a maximum of 20 minutes talking to any westerner or other traveler. How neat is that?! That is the problem I've had while traveling other countries, I stay in a hostel and meet more Europeans than the locals. So I end up leaving that country knowing more about other cultures than the one I'm actually trying to experience. So far, I can't say this about India. In some ways, I have to adjust not spending time with another 'white' person, but that's safe and comfortable for me, and I didn't come here for comfort. So, I arrived in Delhi with no place to stay or anything booked. There is some sort of thrill to arriving in an unknown country and having it as an ... read more

I've discovered there is a reason why people flock to Thailand. Wow, what a wonderful country! I arrived in Bangkok after two months of being on the go, and some much needed rest was in order. So, I dropped my passport off at the embassy, and zoom, on a night bus/boat to a little island called Koh Tao (Koh just means island in Thai, so you see that before any actual name of a place). This island is a divers dream. You can get your PADI (which is a certificate to go diving anywhere in the world on your own) for ridiculously cheap in some of the most beautiful underwater corrals. Even spoke with an instructer who saw a great white shark while I was there.. haha lets hope it was the day I went snorkling ... read more

Asia » Burma » Yangon Region » Yangon November 14th 2012

Wow oh wow...Myanmar, where do I even begin! First off, google map where it is and if you still don't know, it used to be called Burma (I had to do the same so...). Ok, I normally don't do a ton of research of the history of a country before I arrive (lets be honest here...I never do research before). I just sort of learn along the way, but imagine a mix between Asia and India that has been practically blocked off to the western world till only two years ago (apparently CocaCola just started being sold here 3 months ago). Now imagine every rich, ugly kaki wearing, retired person thinking 'Ooooh we have been everywhere else in the world, lets go there and bring thousands of dollars to spend!' Basically, there is a massive flood ... read more

A week in the mountains in northnern Vietnam was one week I will never forget! I'll give a short history on the place I was volunteering (not too long or else...yawn..) So, Vietnam has a lot of ethnic minorities (aka little unknown communities who have lived happily on their own before modernization found them). SaPa, the town where I was, has 85% population of these tribal people. It is so neat to see, because unlike other parts of vietnam, they are actually still facinated and happy to see white people. You see these little tribal people (super short) running around with their traditional outfits (which differ from tribe to tribe) on, and it is not a show either. ANYHOW, one of these people, (her name is Shu), started learning english from tourists coming into her village, ... read more
