Sawasdee Krab (that’s a polite “hello” in Thai language) from Phuket!!!! Several people advised us to stay on another less crowded, developed, and touristy island in Thailand than Phuket. We decided to go the convenient route and stay on Phuket anyway, with the idea of easier, direct travel on the peak and downward slope of our vacation, with a bit of adventure and more recreation and relaxation. Our experience of entering the airport on the island of Phuket, Thailand was a breath of fresh air and one of the easiest entries we’ve ever had when traveling from another country (in this case Cambodia), but we still had the impression that this was an expedited yet thorough arrival process rather than anything half-baked. I cherished the excitement I always have at the sound of the passport agent ... read more

Welcome to the Siem Reap, Cambodia edition of the Southeast Asian Adventure Travelblog!!! We had a great time in Bangkok and were excited to head to our next adventure in Cambodia. At the airport before our flight out, we gave in and had lunch at a McDonalds. American fast food restaurants are around more than we expected. As we stood in line waiting for our food after we ordered, a guy who looked to be about my age said “hey, where are you from? “Colorado” I replied. “I figured you were American when I heard you order, I'm from Nashville,” he said. We chatted a bit and then wished each other safe travels and good luck. Funny how life works sometime, we ended up sitting across from each other at a table in the food court ... read more

Happy New Year early from Thailand!!!! We've enjoyed our 3 days in Bangkok, and as our Fodor travel guide book (and most importantly our trusted friends) have advised, we're glad we aren't spending too long here. For how big this city is, there surprisingly isn't more than 2 or 3 days' worth of sites to see, and in the end, this is a crowded metropolis more than anything. That said, it would be a mistake to visit Thailand and not spend at least some time in Bangkok. **Travelers note**... During the last 2 hours of our 26 total hours of travel time to get here from Denver, I felt cooped up like a rat in a cage in my airplane seat on the 7 hour flight from Tokyo to Bangkok. I'm talking stir crazy... I could ... read more

Here we go… time for another TravelBlog! My wife **and partner in crime** Becky and I are heading to Thailand and Cambodia for 2 weeks of adventure and R & R. The kiddos aren’t joining on this trip, and we'll miss them and look forward to having them along with us on our future international trips when they are older. Today, 12/27/2017, we board a 12 hour and 25-minute direct flight from Denver to Tokyo, Japan, departing around noon Mountain Standard Time. From there we fly another 7 hours and 10 minutes to Bangkok, Thailand. Together, the two flights will cover 8,911 miles. Before this, the longest flight either of has taken was a 9 hour and 35 minute flight from Denver to Frankfurt, Germany. We’ll spend around 24 hours total time to travel to Bangkok ... read more

Summer 2011 has been the most fun and active summer I've EVER had! My partner in crime Becky and I played hard like big kids in an epic outdoor playground for 3 months straight. Seems fitting that what many consider to be the last weekend of summer was a 4-day burst of recreation with a bit of relaxation mixed in! Summer went out with a roar of great weather and warmth in the Colorado Rocky Mountains! The trip started with a bit of a SNAFU... the campsite we reserved was not open for tent camping on Labor Day weekend per bears lumbering into camper's tents looking for food in the late summer. One person even got their leg gnawed on by a bear in August while sleeping in his tent at a campground not too far ... read more

I normally wouldn’t write a TravelBlog entry for a domestic trip, but this is about my 40th birthday celebration extravaganza, and it has been a while... I felt a kitschy vibe coming on as my 40th birthday approached... a sort of Frank-Constanza-Elvis-in-the-70’s-Rhinestone-Vegas-Jumpsuit-White-Patent-Leather-Shoes-1982-Lincoln-Town-Car-With-Leather-Seats-Paul-Newman-Color-of-Money kind of feel. As the 40th approached I felt like embracing the inevitability of the impending over the hill, golden year, silver fox lifestyle that, although still on the distant horizon, is closer at 40 than it ever has been before. Wait... I don't have any hair on my head at 40, so would that make it an impending bald fox lifestyle rather than an impending silver fox lifestyle? Deep thoughts... by Drew Labbo... I have enjoyed Vegas ***and have left quite a lot that has stayed in Vegas*** the few tim... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin August 30th 2009

This trip has been a BLAST. I think we’ve worked in a month’s worth of drinking-and-fun quota in a matter of days… we’ve had fun with some great local people… and we’ve seen many sites. As we arrived in Berlin on the train I thought and knew that we would continue the fun - more drinking, meeting great local people, late nights, and site seeing. However, rather than thinking of beer gardens, hearty German meals, or blonde German women serving beer in Bavarian dresses, I instead felt the gravity of the many atrocities that happened here during and after World War II weighing on my mind. Not to say that I would let these thoughts make the Berlin experience a downer, but that is the vibe I felt the first afternoon and evening in Berlin… but ... read more

We left Prague on Tuesday morning and rode a train for 9 hours to Poznan, connecting through Berlin. The main train station in Berlin where we transferred is ENORMOUS, like a small city - super crowded with all sorts of restaurants and shops. Nine hours is a LONG time to be on a train, especially when worn out. We weren’t able to both doze off for a nap, as we’ve heard a few horror stories from fellow travelers that it’s best for at least one person in a group to stay awake on the train to make sure nobody steals anything while you are sleeping. There are stories of people waking up to find that somebody used a sharp knife to slice open their backpack and luggage and steal things while asleep. I have to wonder ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague August 23rd 2009

Prague has exceeded all of my expectations. A few observations: - Prague is a BEAUTIFUL picturesque city (especially with the Vltava River running through the town) - Prague was mostly spared by World War II compared to many other cities in Europe and much of the ancient structures are intact - Czech women (and other women visiting here) are amazingly beautiful and they are everywhere all over the city - Lots of tourists in this place from all over the world - Most people speak English here and do not expect visitors to speak Czech (considering it is not widely spoken across the world) - People in Prague are likely to sit down with you (or welcome you to sit with them) at a pub or restaraunt in open seats at a table (and are friendly) ... read more

All systems calibrated *check*… ready for lift off, *check*… Houston, we are a go… T-minus 10, 9, 8… I board a plane in Denver this evening at 8 PM, connect through London, and arrive at 6:00 PM tomorrow evening in Prague. Long flight… but it will be worth it. I am already a few cocktails in and expect quite a few more on the plane. (FYI - I will post many more pictures that I take while on this trip in the rest of the travelblog entries) I am traveling again with my buddy Rob - we go way, way back - who joined me as part of the travel crew and international sin set on the recent trip to Nicaragua and Costa Rica in May of this year.
