Hello! Just when you think it is spring to stay, winter grabs you with another wallop! No matter how snowy and cold it has been, the mountains in Jasper and Banff were still spectacular as ever! We heard that the bears are now out of hibernation over here. So we've carried our bear spray with us on a walk in Jasper. We saw some prints, but they ended up being wolf prints in the fresh snow....one big wolf! The Icefields Parkway between Jasper and Banff was very picturesque and our last 20 km was very icy. Captain Dave drove nice and slow and we made it safely into Banff. The other drivers, however, were rather reckless and chose the path of speed, ending up in the snow bank and ditches. I think they may have close ... read more

And so we continue! May I just say that my calling the Tyrell Museum a dinosaur Museum did not do it justice. My lord! This Museum is the best museum I've ever been in. oh ya, and it's proper name is The Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology (in Drumheller). Wow! we were blown away. Every year they find new fossils around the badlands and in the Rocky Shales. And every 1-2 years there is a new missing link it seems. So those of you who have bought paleontology books, there are new theories being made to make some books obsolete. It seems that there was a runaway dinosaur or two in the town. So we ventured off in the evening to capture this rare event. See photos. Now our story takes us to Elk Island National ... read more

Well hello! I've just discovered your comments on the blog site! Looks like comments get posted here and messages go to our emails directly. These modern day technologies! Sorry to the 4 people that left comments and they were unanswered. Now we know to check there! We are currently in Regina, Saskatchewan staying at Karen's. Thanks a bunch, Karen! The temps are much higher in this neck of the woods, so to speak (woods?). We had a lovely plus 12-ish Celcius today. We have had a very relaxing day walking around the parks in the area and watching the prairie dogs. Yesterday we took the number 2 highway from Winnipeg avoiding the Trans-Canada Craziness. We were very fortunate to see a very large migration of geese and gulls cross over the highway. There were thousands of ... read more

Aaah, the memories. I lived in the Peg for about 15 years. It is my second home. We are staying with our good friend Moe, the best hostess ever! Thanks Moe! The "essential experientials" I needed to do so far (a nostalgic quest) are: 1) Go into Prairie Sky Book Store on Westminster Ave and smell the air while browsing the new age books and looking at all the pretty imports and semi precious stones. 2) Walk down the block and buy 1/2 dozen cinnamon buns from the Tall Grass Bakery (no preservatives, and whole wheat!--this means they ARE good for you! haha) 3) Hang out at the Forks, watch the city squirrels, pigeons, take a stroll around to see the sculptures and murals, watch a magician in the centre market, (or musician), buy some farmers ... read more

For a pre-trip reflection, we are trying to think of a clever name for our van. Wanderlust was one, then Dusty just came to me tonight. There is a great website by Dave Fox who talks of the inner and outer journey of travel journalling. He also talks about the pre-trip journey--the planning, the excitement, the expectations....I' m getting excited just thinking about it.... read more

Despite what is portrayed through the media, Sudan is one of the friendliest and hospitable countries in Africa. The people are warm, caring, honest and kind. Of the time I spent on the African continent, some of my most treasured memories come out of Sudan... Dave... This blog text has not been completed.... read more
