Hey guys! I thought I would try and update the blog fairly frequently, as there are many bears around, and I am sure you would all like to see some of the action? Winter has arrived... We had our first winter storm, and the land and lakes are now frozen in time. There is actually sea-ice forming around the shoreline, something we don't normally see until very late October or early November! I have my fingers crossed for an early freeze up, it would hopefully do wonders to our bears! During the last few days we have had a couple of four-legged visitors to the lodge, one big male and a very young bear (We are not sure whether it's a boy or a girl). They have both been extremely curious about us, and tried there ... read more

Hey guys. The highlight of the week this week was during a trip to the dump!!! It's not uncommon to see a big, dirty polar bear rummaging through the food scraps at the town dump, but I was super excited to see a wolverine! He (or she) was all straggly, gnarly and grumpy looking, and although the backdrop of plastic garbage bags and piles of Pampers wasn't visually inspiring, it was a very powerful experience! My first ever wolverine. So cool! Buggy 17 got into a wee bit of trouble out on the tidal flats near Polar Bear Point. The driver (not me) hit a big rock (we speculate) and shattered the leaf spring centre pin, and as a result the entire rear axle moved about a foot back on the springs pulling the u-bolts back ... read more

The Ithaca... Official Number 150820 Launched - 21st October 1922 It is about a 800m hike at low tide to get out there. The 260 ft MV Ithaca has been sitting on a bed of gravel on a shallow tidal flat off the Manitoba coast about 15 km east of Churchill since September 14th 1960. During the last few years Theresa and I have made several visits to the ship and we've even spent the night camping on the stern, which included an amazing sunset and sunrise and aurora... The following text is a summary of a report from Price Ray of Peter Martin Associates Ltd. 1970. In 1960, a nickel mine near Rankin Inlet, Northwest Territories (now part of Nunavut Territory) chartered the Greek ship Ithaca to transport the ore to Churchill, Manitoba. The ship was ... read more

Hi folks! The north wind has been howling for a couple of days now. It is starting to feel like fall, but somehow the temperatures are struggling to get below freezing? Not that I mind, as I have a lot of work to do out on the tundra, I could do with a couple more weeks of warm (Relative for the time of year) weather. Our mobile lodge has been hauled out to the wild and barren, windswept and bleak Polar Bear Point, and we've already had a group of 'campers'. Polar Bears International (PBI) had a group of students staying in the lodge, while seeing 'the land of the white bear' first hand they learned about how our changing climate and melting ice is affecting them. Right now I am flirting between town and the ... read more

Well, hello! Everyone! Dave has certainly left us with some amazing visuals of the Polar Bear and Beluga capital of the world, Churchill, Manitoba. So just to balance out the news coverage, I have taken a few photos of Sioux Lookout (our headquarters) where I am holding the fort with Lilah, our 19 year old cat. When the lupins come out, boy do they bloom! And I just got the tail end of the blooming window of opportunity, back in July. Altho a wet summer was had by all, we are having the most fabulous September ever! I am still picking blue berries! Yum!... read more

Hi there blog-meisters! Theresa and I have had a fun week up in Churchill... We dined in Churchill's finest restaurants (all two of them), and took a couple of very colourful and scenic drives along the coast. One highlight was having a polar bear run across the main street in town when we were out walking! Just a nice reminder that you could be killed and eaten at any time by Nanuq!!! I had to fly to Winnipeg for a day to do a work related course, which was fun, except the timing was a little bad. It was right in the middle of the week that Theresa was visiting! I guess that's just the way it goes. We got out on the Tundra Buggy a couple of times and the colours were amazing! The light ... read more

Hi there. The bears have been putting on quite the show in the last few days as we have seen two different bears eating two different caribou carcasses! I am guessing that the wolves killed the caribous as we saw their tracks nearby. As the bears have been picking away at carcasses, I have been picking blueberries and other wild berries. It takes a while to pick any quantity, so its usually just pick 'em and eat 'em as I find them! The last of the flowers have bloomed and most are now gone, the shrubs are turning red and brown as fall moves in quickly. We are working like crazy in the garage to get everything ready for the insane bear season ahead of us! I am sure it will all go to plan, but ... read more

Greetings to you all. The Beluga whales have been frolicking in the river mouth for the last couple of months and are now migrating out of the river and out of the Hudson Bay. I think it is time to share with you, some of these magic moments I have spent with these magnificent mammals. From the Zodiac they are wonderful, but from a kayak they are even more amazing. I love when they swim under the kayak and blow bubbles, it can be quite a sensation! Their vocal sounds can be heard easily when the water is calm, and the none stop sound of their blowholes is the like the nicest music I've ever listened to. There will still be a few stragglers, but for the most part, they will be gone in a week ... read more

All is well here in on the fringe of the Arctic. We have had our first frost of the season (only 4 weeks since the last frost of spring), so fall is on it's way! However we are experiencing an Indian summer as the temps are now on the rise for the next few days. The good weather has caused a flurry of activity in the Tundra Buggy shop. We can finally do some of our work out side! There are still a lot of bears in the area, in fact there has been sightings of black bears and grizzly bears as well as our iconic polar bears! The tundra colours are in their final few days as the last few flowers struggle to hang on to their little stems, but the berries are just coming ... read more

Great news! Out on the tundra we were amazed when we saw a mum with her three young cubs! It was quite the thrill and it has caused quite the sensation around the world among polar bear experts and enthusiasts alike. It made national news here in Canada and we are all very excited up in Churchill. The threesome were all very chubby and mum looked in real good shape! I hope they make it through the next winter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WTDbzCTDJA (I can't seem to get the link to publish properly? So you'll have to copy and paste it!) Enjoy...
