A person needs at intervals to separate from family and companions and go to new places. One must go without familiars in order to be open to influences, to change--- Katharine Butler Hathaway

Europe June 5th 2009

Hope everyone is having a good morning. Am leaving for the airport. 1 hour flight to Houston. 9 hr 40 minute flight to Paris. They are 7 hours ahead. So, it's 10am here in Austin and 5pm in Paris. I forgot how DST changes that based on the time of the year... I arrive in Paris at 7:55 am, which is 12:55am in Austin. Okay, here we go.... ... read more

Will signed- check. Living will signed- check. Insurance information- check. Mom, I really was listening to all of your advice... In a moment of weakness and momentary lapse in judgment, I unpacked the dreaded carry-on bag to try to cram my toiletries in there. I packed too much. My bag definitely makes me lean and limp a little. Maybe I'll get stronger from carrying it.... I decided to remove three shirts and three pants to cram more toiletries. I will be reminded of that decision for the next 24 hours as I lug that dang bag up stairs, through terminals, over my head, and through securiity. This is how we learn, right? Leaving in two days. Have already determined that I think Patrick will need to bring my coffee creamer when he joins me for Germany and Switzerland. I am not sure I can make it without my Carnation non-dairy creamer after all. That's it! I need a bigger bag! And someone to carry it! Actually, I am quite impressed with myself. I, in fact, did manage to cram six outfits and two pairs of shoes into my carry-on. Then, I crammed two more dresses and one more shirt. Am feverishly trying to figure out if I have anything else that might fit in there. My sack is stuffed, so to speak. No room for treasures (which will also be coming home with Patrick so I can reload). Good call, Dana! Received the key to my apartment in ... read more

Europe April 25th 2009

I am six weeks out from my culinary adventure through Western Europe. I have been several times before, but for a majority of this trip, I will travel alone. Pitiful, right? Not exactly. Check out this itenerary: 1.) Cooking school at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France and renting an apartment overlooking the Eiffel Tower; 2.) driving through Bavaria down the Romantic Road through German castles and amazing countryside; 3.) taking the train through the Swiss Alps from Switzerland to Italy; 4.) riding a gondola in Venice; 5.) Cooking school in Tuscany, Italy; 6.) driving up the French Riviera; and 7.) getting lost in Provence... what a sabbatical! Like pieces of a broken puzzle, I sit here trying to glue together my travel plans into some sort of order. Details, details...lodging, car rentals, train tickets, sights ... read more
