Our arrival into Kanchanaburi has been pretty uneventful. We heard time and time again how we were going to be scammed when we go to Thailand. I wouldn't call the tuk tuk driver a scammer so much as an extortionist. I knew better than to accept a ride right from the bus station. We probably should have walked a few blocks away and we could have scored a cheap ride to the guest houses. Instead, a very helpful and friendly fellow came over and suggested that the cheap rides where not to be found the way we were heading (which they probably were) and that we can hop in with another driver who had been sitting all day waiting for a ride. Such a nice guy to take care of us and the poor guy who ... read more

I woke up this morning fully rested. Last night the air con quit so I had opened the window. The breeze coming in was perfect. I watched a man fuel his scooter and then drive off. I wanted to go down on the street and watch the city wake up. Careful to not wake Candace, I had another shower, dressed and left the room. I walked down the street from the guest house and over a bridge that spanned a khlong (a canal). Looking down into the khlong, I saw some sort of fish (maybe a carp?) on the top while toilet paper floated by. Not the skinny dipping type of place at all. A large bus thundered by belching black smoke and across the street, a Buddhist monk walked with his alms bowl (patra I ... read more

Our driver stops in the middle of the road and gets out and opens the door. He nods towards what looks like a large street party and mutters something about Cows on the road! He gives us our bags and wants to be paid. I can only assume that the Street party or Cows on the road can only be the infamous Khao San Road. Candace grabs my arm as a street vendor pushes up a cart full of large mounds. After closer inspection, we see that the mounds are made of deep fried bugs. She does not look happy. Now most people at this point in time would stop and reevaluate their game plan considering that their wife has had a migraine for the last 25 hrs, is hungry and tired and just saw deep ... read more

Stepping off the plane, I couldn't tell we were anywhere special. Claiming our bags and Customs went really quick. As soon as we stepped out of secured area, we knew we weren't in Kansas anymore. So many things hit you at once. It could be the heat and humidity. A digital readout stated 28 degrees. We came from -25. It could be the pandemonium and noise. There were hundreds of new arrived people, (seems most flights arrive between 19:00 and midnight) and the hundreds waiting to pick them up or sell them something felt that yelling was the easiest way to get your attention, even if you are standing right next to them. Or it could be the smell. Every place in the world has its own smell and Thailand is no different. Its a smell ... read more

Touch Down! After a very long flight which included 6 movies and lots of sitcoms and no sleep, we have arrived in Hong Kong. I feel pretty good for having not really moved much. Of course we were fed and water frequently and talked to a really nice couple from British Columbia that were going to Asia for their umpteenth million time. Candace got a migraine and was sick the whole way. I think she is having a good time right now. She has slept, if you can call it that for the majority of the time and has not eaten much more than ice to stay hydrated. She always seems to get those bloody headaches when she can not get away to chill out in a dark quiet room. I hope she starts to feel ... read more

We arrived in Vancouver and it was a balmy +8 outside. We have 3 hours to wait for our next flight which will deliver us in Hong Kong! We head to the phones and call my uncle but he is not home! So much for lunch with him. This leaves us to grabbing some food from the food court. Candace quickly made short work of some pancakes and I had noodles.... well it is 10:00 in the morning and we are headed to South East Asia. After eating, we went to the huge aquarium, bought some snacks for the plane ride to Hong Kong then settled down at the gate to catch a quick snooze. I sat there watching ground personnel throw bags around and could have sworn them throw my backpack onto a different cart ... read more

Well today has finally come and we're stoked! Both Candace and I have saw the kids and animals off to her Mom and Dad's and we were finally alone for our last night in Manitoba. Instead of getting any sleep, we both rushed around the house checking and re-checking our back packs to make sure we didn't forget the little we were both taking. By the time the alarm went off, I think I had gotten 4 hours sleep. A quick call to my Dad to make sure he was up and on his way to our house to drive us to the airport and the rechecking of the bags began again. I'm not sure what it is about the incessant need to confirm you have underwear but I'm sure someone must have crossed the world ... read more
