We are one month away from leaving and we have lots of decisions to make however we have agreed on 3 focal points. Our first stop after Bangkok will be the (in)famous Phuket . I always said I did not want to go to Phuket because of the "package" tourist market that is predominantly catered to there. Not that we are backpacking snobs, and feel our trips more "real" as we support locals by spending local or anything like that. Its about not needing all the excess to relax. A lot can be said for simplicity. I don't expect everyone to agree with me and there will be those that love to be pampered and led around like cattle and maybe its good that they have that. My holidays will never be ones where you sit ... read more

It seems that a whole lot of time has slipped away and before we knew it, December had rolled around. A lot of things had happened since we last traveled but we vowed to take another trip this coming year as we both had so much fun traveling together last year. Of course the unimaginable seemed to come up with every week that dragged past. I injured myself while trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, Candace's migraines seemed to intensify and any extra money we seemed to save was paid out for repairs on our cars. Each week, we saw life taking over and slowly forgot that we had promised ourselves another once in a life time trip to South East Asia. With patience, the injuries started to heal, the headaches diminished and the extra money ... read more

Patience is a virtue! Muscle pain gone! Pinched nerves gone! South East Asia will have to put up with me after all. Thanks to an over zealous massage therapist and some good ole stretching I think my pulled hamstrings are back to almost normal. For awhile, we were worried that this injury, that lasted two months, would never heal. We were both surprised when I woke up one morning to find most of the pain had disappeared. I owe a lot of it to Naproxin and Extra strength liquid gel Advils. With the focus back on the trip, Candace and I have been trying to work out some minor details such as were we want to visit. Last year, I did a lot of the leg work and vowed that Candace needed to have more input. ... read more

The worst thing that could happen has happened. Our trip back to Thailand, Cambodia and Laos could be in jeopardy. About a month and 1/2 ago, I injured myself while working out. It seemed minor at the time and I continued to work out. Well the injury got worse and I am now almost unable to walk most days. I started out by going to the chiropractor as I thought I put my back out. After several visits, I found that this was doing nothing. I then started massage therapy. This offered partial relief but the pain came back the next day. It appears my hamstrings were pulled in my left leg. This had stopped me from diving, running and I don't even fell comfortable enough to do my normal weight routine either. I'm going to ... read more

Another step closer to our return trip to South East Asia was completed with a round of handshakes after completing my open water diving course. The water wasn't all that cold but then I was too excited to notice. Four of us descended and when we came back up after 4 dives, we were PADI certified Open Water Divers. I would love to say everything was awesome but there was a little mishap which ended up with me not equalizing my mask. In some circles, this is important. Ummmmm.... diving being one of those circles. I didn't realize how bad the mask squeeze was until I stopped for gas on the way to my camp site after the dive. The kid behind the counter was like "Whoa... Dude, you look freaky!". I went to the bathroom ... read more

My son Quincy called me at work the other day. He had caught the tail end of the story on the news that there was a man driving across Canada in a Tuk Tuk! Q couldn't give me any more info and although I thought it would be cool to show the kids what a real Tuk Tuk looks like, I dismissed the idea as it was highly unlikely we would be able to find the guy! The next day I read a brief article in the paper that the Tuk Tuk had come through Winnipeg. Missed a little bit of South East Asia. A few days went by and we were on our way to pick up my car from the shop and as we crossed through the intersection, Quincy points out that coming towards ... read more

Summer seems to be almost done although there is still a month left. The weather in Manitoba has been less than ideal for hitting the beach and our brand new pool has not seen that much use. Both Payton and Quincy are off for Summer vacation and they both seemed okay with not doing a large vacation out west to Alberta or British Columbia this year. Instead we have tried to keep them busy with various activities including trips to Birds Hill Park, Winnipeg Beach and different things around town. Candace and the kids are planning to head to South Dakota in October for a week and I think next year, we are going to go on a family vacation again so they are still getting some travel time in. I finally decided that if I ... read more

Well it looks like we have decided to travel again this year. This time it's going to be for only 3 weeks! Candace and I discussed the idea and both feel that we want to see some more of S.E. Asia. At this point, we figure that we will shoot for February and will make Laos and Cambodia the focus of our travels. Lots of details need to be worked out and I'm also flirting with the idea of going over a week before and doing a dive trip. Candace seems to be warming up to the idea although she does not want to travel 25 hours by herself. I keep telling her, she'll be fine. Of course it makes me wonder what situations I will encounter that I haven't thought about!?! With every trip, there ... read more

Our first trip to South East Asia has been amazing. We wanted to share some of the best and worst things we experienced. Candace's List Migraines on Planes - There is no getting away from anyone. I got one and it lasted the entire flight. Airline Food - Tasteless mushy or rubbery substances. "Is that even real food?" Late Night Hotel Hunting - Only a fool would not pre-book a place for the first night in BKK, right Jason? Raw Bacon - It's not beef so please cook it. Coffee In the Morning - The only way to start my morning. Even if it's freeze dried Nabob. Banana Pancakes - Sweet goodness in every mouthful. Who thought that something so good could be cooked up on a street corner. Unknown Meat Skewers - Street Vendor prepared ... read more
