Taxi Ride to MBK Today, we wanted to take the time to head to MBK to do some souvenir shopping as we heard the prices could not be beat. We scooped a taxi and quickly got tangled in the early morning traffic in BKK. It was very understandable why they don't suggest driving in this city. Although the flow of traffic seemed very inefficient, I couldn't help but be in awe of the number of scooters zipping in and out of traffic along with Tuk Tuks, buses, Hi-Lux's and the infamous Camry taxis, and everyone seemed to get where they were going... including us. I couldn't help but feel some admiration for the calm people seem to have amongst the chaos. MBK Oh my Gawd! I am not a mall type person and upon entering this ... read more

Final Morning On Samui This morning we woke up and rushed to make sure we didn't miss our ride to the airport. Surprisingly, we were early and ended up sitting out beside the road with a stray dog. It was pitch black out and with every set of head lights approaching we were sure it was our taxi. None stopped and we were starting to think we may need to start walking. Finally at ten after 5:00, a taxi pulled over and asked us if we wanted a ride. Seemed odd that a taxi we ordered would ask us that. When I asked him the price, he quoted us 500 baht. I nearly fell over. When we booked the taxi, the total cost we were told would be about 200 baht and we were balking ... read more

After our gut busting howl late last night and one heck of a great sleep, we were up early as we had signed up for a snorkeling tour. Funny enough, no movement next door. Guess they were tired from all that work last night. The minibus dropped us off at a restaurant on the beach where we had breakfast (included in the tour price) and then boarded a speed boat which would take us to Koh Tao. The ride across was very rough and as luck would have it, we were sitting in the front again with a couple that worked in Afghanistan 3 guys from France and a lady boy in the making. As we bounced along, the lady boy, a brother of one of the crew members seemed to take delight in banging hard ... read more

In case some of you didn't notice, 2 days ago was Valentines day. We didn't mention it but we did celebrate it. I think somewhere in between the ferry ride and the bus we were able to slip in a few I love yous and kisses. Hey when you're in paradise, its hard to pick only one day to be all lovey dovey. This morning we decided that we wanted to move to the other side of the island to be nearer the airport as we were planning on flying back up to Bangkok soon. We had planned on doing some more exploring and perhaps a trip out to Koh Tao and Koh Phangnan. Its a wonder what 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep will do for a person. We figured out why they had such a large and warm comforter. The air-con was actually retro-fitted from a blast freezer. The low setting must have meant that the temperature would be low. At least my feet slide across the iced up tiled floor to the bathroom. Brrrrrrrrr. I could still hear the load roar of the wind outside and was surprised upon opening the door. Instead of wind-whipped trees and dark clouds, I was blinded by the bright sunlight reflecting off the ocean that roared up onto shore in front of me. In utter amazement, I stumbled out onto the already warm beach. The "storm" we had heard last night was in fact the waves crashing up onto the beach. The ... read more

Mmmmmm...... a cool breeze blew in our open balcony door all night long. What a nice change from the air-con we have used to cool off. I have to admit that the heat has been pretty demanding and we have caved on not getting air-con rooms. Its easy to forget the roosters are going to start crowing as soon as the sun hints at rising in the sky. It must have been sunny somewhere cause they serenaded us extra early today. We quickly got ready and made our way down stairs where our ride was waiting to take us to the bus station. No time for breakfast. We met an pretty Israeli girl traveling alone. At first we thought she was being indifferent to us or did not speak English but soon determined by her comments and ... read more

This morning we decided that we wanted to stay in Ao Nang for something different. Although we love Krabi and how quiet it is, we need to stretch our legs again. Ao Nang is really touristy so I'm sure things will be interesting. I was treated to another morning of workers getting ready for the day. I watched the crew of street sweepers come out and clean up last nights leaves and garbage that had blown in.Kids passed by on their way to school. I could have sat all morning and just watched. Candace reminded me about getting to Ao Nang early to find a decent guesthouse. We quickly packed up and went down to have breakfast. The guesthouse owner gave us directions to the closet place to catch the song thaew to Ao Nang. On ... read more

Its fun to watch a town wake up. When I leave for work, I am out the door at 5:15 and I see all sorts of things that most people miss. Over here, its the same thing. This morning, I watched men delivering fish, bags of rice and lots of vegetables. I watched a man wash his face on his balcony. Street Ladies came out and swept the street with brooms and dustpans made of old square cooking oil cans. Everyone was busy getting ready for another day. And then the motorbikes and scooters came out with whole families perched on them. Dad and Mom taking the kids to school. All 6 of them balanced on a single scooter and not one helmet amongst them. The kids all wore white shirts and dark blue pants and ... read more

This morning had I know the adventure we were in for, I would have probably made some different choices. Like taking the public bus or perhaps I would have watched for the chickens. Either way, I would have probably saved the pain and agony of riding in a vehicle made for 12 (not 15 with luggage and livestock) and I would have not been involved in the Nascar race on the toll-road to the airport. When traveling, its important to remember that not everything is going to work in your favor. Shit happens. You're not at home anymore. Get used to it. For those that refuse to lighten up. Be prepared for a whole lot of agony. My teachers always said I could use with an attitude adjustment. After having breakfast at our guest house and ... read more

This morning, we had breakfast in the open air restaurant at our guest house. The young lady that seems to run the place is pregnant and has another kid running around. I don't think she smiles. I wonder if its because she has to wait on us? I wonder what we must seem like to her? Would it be any different than someone working at a hotel back home? I'm going to see if she'll smile before we leave Kanchanaburi. Instead of a song thaew to the bus depot, we took a motorbike taxi with a side car of sorts. In our short time in Thailand, I think I have seen just about anything that can have wheels added and pulled or pushed by a motorbike carrying something or someone. Back home, this would just not ... read more
