Taxi Ride to MBK

Today, we wanted to take the time to head to MBK to do some souvenir shopping as we heard the prices could not be beat. We scooped a taxi and quickly got tangled in the early morning traffic in BKK. It was very understandable why they don't suggest driving in this city. Although the flow of traffic seemed very inefficient, I couldn't help but be in awe of the number of scooters zipping in and out of traffic along with Tuk Tuks, buses, Hi-Lux's and the infamous Camry taxis, and everyone seemed to get where they were going... including us.
I couldn't help but feel some admiration for the calm people seem to have amongst the chaos.

MBK

Oh my Gawd! I am not a mall type person and upon entering this one, all I could do was stand there and stare at the immensity of this one. I'm all for getting in and getting out. I doubt that ever happens here. There were entire areas dedicated to cell phones, another for souvenir type shirts, another for purses and handbags. What type of hell have we entered?

We decided to splurge on a VIP movie so we bought tickets to Charlie Wilson's War and then decided since we had time we would have lunch at Sizzler's. We both enjoyed burgers and fries while I also had soup and salad from the salad bar. Although the food was okay, it felt weird eating western food, almost sacrilegious in nature while being in Thailand. Before leaving we found that we didn't know what to tip the waitress. On our entire trip, we ate a lot of food from street vendors and we didn't know what would seem like a good tip. In the end we left them all of our change plus 150 baht in bills. I think she made about 300 baht. Not to shabby. I think!

We were still early for the movie but feeling full we opted to sit and wait in the lobby. We had no sooner sat down when the girl from the concession came over and offered us popcorn and fruit drinks in wine glasses. Now this is a movie theatre. She then ushered us in after a few glasses of juice and we were seated in large recliner like seats and given blankets. After the national anthem which we of course stood for, we were treated to a really good movie.
The blankets came in handy due to the fact that they obviously used the room to blast freeze meat after hours and got the schedules mixed up. Man, turn down the air conditioner.

We left MBK and visited Siam Center. More high end stores with stuff we didn't need. We finally made our way back to Khao San Road where we went for a swim, then a massage and then one more night walking the strip.

We're really going to miss this place
