LE HAVRE TO BREUIL TO HONFLEUR, FRANCE The day was overcast with the threat of rain. I carried the Holland America provided umbrella with me, but I never needed it. The short ride to the first stop was through the countryside and fields of canola (for the oil) and livestock were abundant. Most intersections the bus navigated were roundabouts, very popular around here. The name of my tour was “A taste of Normandy: Cheese and Cider”. Normandy is famous for Calvados - its superb apple brandy. I visited the Chateau du Breuil for a tour of its distillery and a taste of its calvados and its aperitif Pommeau and some of its cheeses. The chateau was built in the 16th and 17th centuries and the former home of various noble families. The cider was especially good ... read more

CHERBOURG TO THE D DAY BEACHES The sun was shining brightly but the temperature was cool. I boarded the bus early since the tour was scheduled for nine hours and I had to be back on board at 5:30. My time in Cherbourg was only a drive through on the way to Arromanches, a modest sea side resort which is where the British forces landed at Gold Beach on June 6, 1944. I only missed the 69th anniversary by a little more than a week. There is a Museum with good films and displays which explain the immense operation to free Europe. Some of the man made port so vital to the success of the invasion remain on the beach. It was very thought provoking to walk on the beach where so many had died in ... read more

ON THE PRINSENDAM TO ST. MALO, FRANCE Seven days on sea from Hamilton, Bermuda to St. Malo, France may seem like a long time, but the activities on board and the companionship of new acquaintances and friends along with well planned activities and entertainment make everything smooth and easy. St. Malo is on the English Channel and dates from the sixth century. It is the home of Jacques Cartier and others. It was also home to many privateers. When we went ashore this morning, everything was fouled up for a while because of the weather, but, after a delay of greater than an hour, transfer to shore on tenders went OK and I got on my scheduled bus. The adventure began. My first stop was Dinan, an amazing village with buildings dating back to the 1500’s. ... read more

FORT LAUDERDALE TO BERMUDA ON THE PRINSEDAM I left Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Bermuda on the Prinsedam on May 17, 2013. The Prinsedam is a relatively small ship, 793 passengers and 439 crew, with follow stops in France and Belgium before ending in Tillbury, England. There are advantages and disadvantages to sailing on a small vessel. So far, I’ve only seen the advantages. I’ve met several really nice people from many locales, especially a couple from San Fransisco and another from San Jose. There are fewer bars on a small ship, so I get to know the bar tenders quicker and the entertainers as well. The entertainment on this ship is superior to many of the larger ships I’ve been on recently. Today I landed in Hamilton, Bermuda. I got up early to view the fantastic ... read more

OSAKA - SECOND FULL DAY - I awoke this morning undecided about my activities. One option was to spend the day at Universal Studios Japan. The other was to go downtown and experience the city center. I have been to Universal Los Angeles and Orlando before, I’m not a big movie fan, especially since I’m not in the target audience for the current crop, and I don’t do many thrill rides. So, I opted to go downtown, by train. I’m one of the few Caucasians on the trains and I haven’t heard any English in my wanderings. Needed help from the information desk about my fare and which track my train would be on. The fare was 160 yen, less than $2. US and I only had to wait about three minutes before it came in. ... read more

OSAKA, DAY 2 - Went downstairs for breakfast and a long line had formed. Buffet was about $35. US and the American breakfast was about $30. So I thought I could do better on the street or in the mall I ate dinner in last night. I was correct in that the prices were significantly lower, but I wasn’t that hungry. I just wanted enough to take my pills and get the day started. I went to McDonald’s, but I used the Japanese menu (picture)! An egg mcmuffin and coffee cost about $4. US. Fortified I went to one of the major tourist draws in Osaka, the Osaka Castle. It’s not far from my hotel as the crow flies, but the crow doesn’t walk up the hill! Beautiful grounds, I have taken literally hundreds of pictures ... read more

Well Murphy’s Law strikes again! I’m on a cruise ship between China and Korea; I get an email from American Express asking me to verify I bought gasoline in Canada. After a thirty-five minute satellite telephone call (which they said they will reimburse me for the charges), they issued me a new card making the one I was carrying invalid. Good thing I had another card. Moral: carry two. The final night dinner I spent with two people from Australia, one man from Vancouver and an American-Japanese lady from Los Angeles who kindly offered to show me around Kyoto and Osaka. Don’t know whether that will transpire, but a much appreciated offer. Disembarkation went smoothly and three buses of people from the cruise headed for a tour of Kobe before going to the airport. Nice city ... read more

NAGASAKI - Pretty nice today, sunshine and temperatures in the 60’s. Nagasaki today is about 450,000 people and I was surprised to see they drive on the left. Lots of things to do, but the tour I chose had three stops. First stop is the Nagasaki Peace Park with the Buddha like Statue of Peace holding out his hand in an appeal to cease the madness of war as he points heavenward with the other to remind humanity of our place in a larger universe and hopefully contain our destructive urges. Our tour guide today is a soft spoken gentleman who observed the mushroom cloud from the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki at 11:02 am on August 9, 1945. He was nine years old and with friends about 25 miles from Nagasaki. The Peace Park features ... read more

BUSAN, KOREA - Yesterday was a sea day and I spent it going to lectures about our last two ports of call and organizing some of my pictures on the computer. Dinner dress was for the final formal night and I decided to wear my tux shirt and my black suit since I didn’t want to carry them all the way to Asia without using them. After dinner was the “Black and White Ball” where all the ships officers, male and female, dance with guests and, after each dance, an officer identifies their self as a “mystery officer” and the dance partner wins a prize. I’m sitting at the bar with my bar buddies when the last dance is announced and a beautiful, young lady officer (if I had a granddaughter, she would be that age) ... read more

When I booked this cruise, I hadn’t heard of the city of Dalian. Now I’m here and I find that it is the fourth largest city in China with a population of about 7.8 million and operating at a much easier pace than Shanghai and Beijing. Dalian is an ice free port in the north of China that was occupied by both Japan and Russia during the early 20th century and architectural influences of both occupiers remain. Dalian is on the Yellow sea and has nice looking beach areas even though it is so far north. Interesting neighborhoods are apparent and make this look like a very livable large city. One of the highlights of the tour I was on was a visit to an elementary school with exceptionally talented students. The ages were from five ... read more
