BRUJO GLACIER, SARMIENTO CHANNEL, GRAY CHANNEL, SMYTH CHANNEL AND STRAIT OF MAGELLAN - January 16. I sleep with my drapes covering the windows leading to my verandah open, I figure who’s going to look in?, and awoke to see chunks of ice in the water. I got dressed quickly and went to the Crow’s Nest so I could see forward, port and starboard all at once. The view from my stateroom is great, but it’s on the starboard side. At 8:30 we were at the Brujo Glacier. The captain stopped the ship for 30 minutes and then turned around and headed through the Sarmiento Channel back to sea. The glacier was very impressive. The weather was cool but no rain and visibility was good. Lucky again! After a light lunch I’m off to the “International beer ... read more

AT SEA JANUARY 15 Well, it finally happened. No sun today, instead fog, fog, fog. But no problem, because we were too far out to sea to see shore anyway. So, I went to the Celebrity Guest Chef event with Tim Byres. Great demo and lecture. Then I washed my clothes in the self service laundry. After lunch I observed, didn’t participate, but observed the foxtrot dancing lesson. Then nap time! I read a couple of chapters of Killing Kennedy and fell asleep. Got up, decided to shave and put on my tuxedo shirt and bow tie with my black suit. Went to happy hour, then dinner and finally the Black & White Ball. Lots of fun to observe people having fun. No port tomorrow, but we will pass by the Amalia Glacier and Canal Sarmiento. ... read more

JANUARY 14- PUERTO CHACABUCO, CHILE I don’t know how I got so lucky; another beautiful, sunny and warm day! The guide said the weather was so unusually nice, we got to see a lot of things that are usually not seeable because of rain or mist. I took the tender to the bus and began the 5 ½ hour tour on time. The excursion write up says “Depart from Puerto Chacabuco on the legendary Carretera Austral to Coyhaique, the capital of the Aisen Region which claims breathtakingly steep peaks, glaciers, cascading rivers and grassy steppes”. It is an accurate description. I’m glad we had a good driver because the guard rails looked very skimpy and the steep and deep drops would have been impossible to survive. I can’t express the beauty of this place enough, but ... read more

Sunday January 13 What a beautiful day! Castro, Isla Chiloe, Chile. It was supposed to be 60 degrees with a chance of rain so I had a T shirt, long sleeve shirt and a sweater. I carried a jacket. When I went ashore I carried the jacket. Shortly after I took off the sweater. Perfect day weather-wise. I went ashore by the tender. Smooth seas, smooth ride. When I got ashore, I realized I had quite a hike up a steep hill to reach the town square and the Cathedral, my sight seeing objective. Before I began the climb, I found a sea shore park, for some unknown to me reason, dedicated to old trains. One engine was named after my friend Manny from the White Horse I knew he was well known internationally, but I ... read more

SATURDAY JANUARY 12 - temperature 60 degrees Surprise! Wind speed is 23 mph making the transfer by tender to Puerto Montt impossible, so we sit at anchor here in the harbor. All shore excursions are cancelled. Think of the impact on the local economy. I was looking forward to my day with a local chef, but nothing I can do about it. We were supposed to discover the ethnic fusion of native ingredients and creative food preparation. Pick up the best ingredients needed to prepare lunch at the local market. The end product was to be a delicious gourmet lunch, prepared by the chef. I had breakfast at the buffet. These cooks make amazing omelets! The ship arranged some special events because the port visitations were canceled, but I just read some of Killing Kennedy on ... read more

At sea day two I overslept this am and missed breakfast. By the time I shaved and showered it was lunch time. I missed the cooking demo at 11:00, but after lunch I made the “International beer tasting” event. Four beers; Red Stripe from Jamaica, Warstringer from Germany, Carlsberg from Denmark and Blue Moon from USA. My partner, Don, and I won the beer trivia game and each got a pin! After that I went to the wine tasting event. We tried Simi Sauvignon Blanc, Damzanti Pinot Grigio, Diseno Malbec and Spellbound Cabernet Sauvignon. The sommelier explained a lot about the wines and the characteristics of the different wines. I missed the mixology class, but you can’t do it all. I accessed the internet to check my messages and upload the travel blog and then went ... read more

SANTIAGO TO VALPARISO AND AT SEA It was such a relief to take off my compression socks and relax (I hate those things, but I need to wear them on long trips). Good thing I bought the plug adapters and voltage transformer before I left. Voltage is 220 in Chile and the prongs are entirely different from US. The internet access in the hotel was fine and the TV was OK, but I listened to music instead. Sunset was at 9:15, great! I had a buffet breakfast at the hotel and met the shuttle bus to the ship. It was the first of several busses so, after the hour and a half ride through the Chilean countryside, we were in Valparaiso where the Holland America ms Veendam was waiting. We had a commentator on the bus ... read more

Well, this first day has been a good adventure, some learning experiences, but a rewarding day. I left Sarasota at 1:30 pm on Monday to get to the Tampa airport. Everything went smoothly until the driver found out that I275 was closed at the airport exit because of a serious traffic accident. I down loaded an app to assist us and he decided to take an alternative route. Good idea! We got to the airport as scheduled in spite of the I275 blockage, The Tampa to Atlanta flight went smoothly but we were delayed for 20 minutes waiting for the pilots from a Minneapolis to Tampa flight. We still got to Atlanta on time but sat on the tarmac for twenty minutes waiting for a plane to leave our gate. All turned out OK, but I ... read more

December 7 My flight was early, leaving at 7:20 AM. With the time zone change, I got back to Tampa at 6:00 PM after transferring in Detroit. The flights were uneventful and all on time. I got my car which I had left in the long-term parking. It only took me an hour to get from the airport to home . It was a very good, but short, trip.... read more

December 6 My last full day in San Diego I started with a ride on the Old Town Trolley Tour, with stops in the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, San Diego harbor , seaport village , the convention center, Horton Plaza shopping center, Gas Lamp Quarter, bayfront, Coronado ferry landing, Balboa park and the San Diego Zoo, and Little Italy. It was a good way to see the area and provided me with incentive to take the ferry to Coronado . I got off in Coronado and had lunch there. The view across the bay to the city of San Diego is beautiful . I went back to the hotel and had dinner there.... read more
