SEA OF GALILEE AND NAZARETH, ISRAEL - DAY 4 The Sea of Galilee is a must-see destination during an Israel travel experience. The Sea is 210 meters (about 684 feet) below sea level and the Golan Hieghts are on the east bank. At the Yigal Alon Museum an amazing treasure that rocked the worlds of archaeology, history and faith is displayed; the remains of an extraordinary 2,000 year old fishing boat that dates back to the time and place of Jesus was discovered along the Sea of Galilee in 1986. Our guide yesterday, Zivit, was with us again and she is very, very good. The experience was amazing; I saw where the Sermon on the Mount was made, where the miracle of feeding the 5,000 happened, where Jesus turned water into wine at Cana, where he ... read more

TO CAESAREA AND HAIFA - DAY 3 We left Tel Aviv at 9:00 am for the drive to Caesarea to see the seaport planned and built by King Herod. On the way we passed through Netanya but didn’t stop. Caesarea is a very interesting area with a lot of historic events happening there. Please note that if you’re interested in an accurate and thorough history, you should read some of the very many well researched and scholarly books available on these subjects. I’m only giving my touristy impressions and my main source of information is the very capable tour guide(s). Over a period of 12 years, Herod made Caesarea into a grand city and major seaport dedicated to Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus, who had returned it to Herod after wresting it away from Cleopatra. We viewed ... read more

TEL AVIV DAY 2 - Shalom! I was a little better at the breakfast buffet this morning, I didn’t try to eat the whole display. Our tour day started with an overview by our tour guide Matt. He has been with Tauck 30 years and this is his 50th Israel and Jordan tour. We will be joined each day with local tour guides specializing in that area. Our guide today was Or, a resident of Tel Aviv and he proved to be an excellent guide, giving us a well balanced description of the history of the area and the perspective of the various groups involved in the conflicts and challenges of modern Israel. We even had a brief Hebrew lesson. Another beautiful day, sunny, temperature around 80, humidity 60%, light breeze. I saw several barefoot men ... read more

SARASOTA, FL TO TEL AVIV, ISRAEL Started from Sarasota, Fl at 11:30 am and arrived in Tel Aviv at 2:30 pm the next day. Accounting for the seven time zones that took 20 hours with the last leg from JFK in New York on a 747 being over 10 hours alone. All the flights were good and smooth except for a short duration of bumpiness over the Atlantic Ocean. On the 747, there was some commotion among the passengers when boarding, but everything calmed down after we started taxiing and it was a pleasant journey thereafter. The meals were adequate and the service efficient. I watched the movie “42” about Jackie Robinson and listened to music most of the flight. I napped little, however, so when I arrived at my hotel, The David Intercontinental in Tel ... read more

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK I arrived in Albany from Sarasota as scheduled. I used some of my accumulated miles from previous trips to fly first class. First time I had booked first class (I have been upgraded on a few previous flights) and I know why it’s called first class. My car I booked at Hertz wasn’t ready, so they upgraded me to a bigger car. I only had to wait a few minutes, so the upgrade was a real gift. I got to my sister’s house earlier than she (Bev) expected, so my brother-in-law (Bob) and I checked out some of his home brew (very good) and some good beers from production breweries also. My sister prepared a great dinner featuring grilled steak. Sunday, I went to church at St. Mary’s in Ballston Spa. It ... read more

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA On Saturday, I arrived at the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport as scheduled after a smooth flight from Sarasota. My cousin Phil picked me up and took me to his very nice home in West St. Paul where I met his beautiful wife Joanna and his son Steve. They have kindly made their home my home for my four day stay. My cousin and I went to a nice Italian restaurant for a pizza lunch. It was unseasonably cool and drizzling, but we didn’t melt. In appreciation of their hospitality, I took them to dinner at the St. Paul Grill in the St. Paul Hotel. My friends from the London trans Atlantic cruise recommended it highly and their advice was perfect. It was my hosts first time at the Grill for dinner and they enjoyed ... read more

DAYS THREE AND FOUR IN LONDON, ENGLAND Monday - I had a small breakfast at the hotel, then headed out to get the bus to my first stop of the day, the Tower of London, a historic former fortress, royal palace and prison, containing the Crown Jewels and the White Tower and featuring tours by the Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters). The day was beautiful, sunny and mild. I got to the Tower before it opened and waited in a line that got very long before admission, but the place is large enough to accommodate many. The fortress was started in the eleventh century and is situated right on the Thames. I then went on a cruise on the Thames from the Tower to the Westminster Pier. I walked across the Thames (on the bridge, of course) to ... read more

TILBURY TO LONDON, ENGLAND I got off the ship earlier than expected but my driver got there a half hour earlier than scheduled, so it worked out fine. This was the first time I’ve tried private transportation from the airport or dock to a hotel and it worked out great. I’ll definitely repeat, but internet searching for a fair price is essential if you're trying to stick to a budget. The more people in a party, the more reasonable it is in general. The company I selected is Blackberry Cars and I'm very pleased with them. My driver was very personable and he gave me several hints on things to do since it was my first time in London in over 30 years. He also made a few diversions on the way to the hotel to ... read more

BRUGES, BELGIUM AND BEER TASTING I landed at Zeebrugge, port for Bruges, Belgium, for a tour entitled “Bruges and a taste of Belgian beer”. Weather was overcast in the morning but cleared up to be a beautiful day. During the 30 minute drive the guide gave small samples of the dark chocolate and milk chocolate that Belgium is famous for. When I got to this medieval city, the guide led me on a walking tour through this fantastic place. The narrow, cobblestone streets and the ancient buildings were pointed out by the guide. Highlights included the Belfry Tower and the Chapel of the Holy Blood. But after the walk I started the real adventure, Belgian beer tasting. There were 26 people in my group and we had reserved tables in the local café. The place was ... read more

LE HAVRE TO BREUIL TO HONFLEUR, FRANCE The day was overcast with the threat of rain. I carried the Holland America provided umbrella with me, but I never needed it. The short ride to the first stop was through the countryside and fields of canola (for the oil) and livestock were abundant. Most intersections the bus navigated were roundabouts, very popular around here. The name of my tour was “A taste of Normandy: Cheese and Cider”. Normandy is famous for Calvados - its superb apple brandy. I visited the Chateau du Breuil for a tour of its distillery and a taste of its calvados and its aperitif Pommeau and some of its cheeses. The chateau was built in the 16th and 17th centuries and the former home of various noble families. The cider was especially good ... read more
