SEA OF GALILEE
FIRST VIEW FROM BUS SEA OF GALILEE AND NAZARETH, ISRAEL - DAY 4
The Sea of Galilee is a must-see destination during an Israel travel experience. The Sea is 210 meters (about 684 feet) below sea level and the Golan Hieghts are on the east bank. At the Yigal Alon Museum an amazing treasure that rocked the worlds of archaeology, history and faith is displayed; the remains of an extraordinary 2,000 year old fishing boat that dates back to the time and place of Jesus was discovered along the Sea of Galilee in 1986. Our guide yesterday, Zivit, was with us again and she is very, very good. The experience was amazing; I saw where the Sermon on the Mount was made, where the miracle of feeding the 5,000 happened, where Jesus turned water into wine at Cana, where he instructed Peter to cast his net on the other side of the boat, the excavation of the town where Mary Magdalene was living, and rode on a replica of a boat that Jesus probably used to visit those sites on the north shore of the Sea (actually a fresh water lake). I ate fish caught from the lake(St. Peter’s fish, a fresh water tilapia) and
unique to the Sea of Galilee. On the bus ride to Nazareth, we passed by an excavation site looking for remnants of ancient Magdela, home of Mary Magdalene and saw Mt. Tabor, site of the Transfiguration.
Before we got to Nazareth, we passed through Tiberias and then stopped at the Dayganya Kibbutz for a brief walk through and stop at their museum. We heard of how time and the changes in Israel have made life in a kibbutz different over the years.
Lunch was in Nazareth at a nice, old restaurant and the food was again very good. Lots of salads and choices of entrees, I had steak. Desert was watermelon.
We drove the short distance to the Church of the Annunciation built about 50 years ago on the site where the angel Gabriel announced that Mary was to be the mother of Jesus. It is a very impressive church and people of all faiths visit. There was to be a wedding in a few minutes after we were scheduled to leave, but we didn’t have time to observe. We went back to the hotel to hear a panel of representatives of Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Baha’i
faiths discuss the unique cooperation among the faiths in Haifa.
Dinner was on our own and I found another pub for a fish and chips and a couple of good Israeli beers. Another great day. Tomorrow Akko and then drive to Jerusalem. ILYS
