South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro December 13th 2005

When my baby smiles at me I go to Rio...de Janeiro......... At the Copa, Copacabana....music and passion were always in fashion.... Yes sad and cheesy but I could not get those songs out of my head on the trip up (even more frustrating I couldn’t remember any more words!!!) they just kept going around and around. So there I was with gorgeous coast line on one side, beautiful rainforest on the other humming/singing away to myself (and to Matt - probably much to his annoyance!) Guess I was excited about Rio.... First impressions weren’t the greatest. It was raining and Rio isn’t really a beautiful looking city. We stayed in Ipanema (yes also famous from another famous song...) which was nice - it is next to Copacabana, and a very nice area - the L.V store ... read more

I am in love - Brazil is such a fantastic country! To be fair I have only seen such a small part of it, but it is so beautiful and everything so far seems so great - the weather, the scenery and the people... This blog is about a few different places as we have done a few days here and there. Firstly we left Foz and went to Curitiba. We were going to go slightly lower to Florianpolis which is supposed to be really nice, but we just didn´t feel like the extra time on buses!! We got in quite early to Curitiba, and decided to splash out a bit and stay in a hotel. The hotel was lovely, nothing overly fancy but newish, clean great breakfast AND afternoon tea! Also the staff were great ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Iguazú National Park December 1st 2005

WOW! WOW! WOW! pretty much sums up Iguazu Falls. Iguazu; I=water, guazu=big, is a fair enough name, these falls are huge! The height is around 74m max on them but the length and volume of water!!! Over 2.47 km, there are 275 waterfalls, pushing out 1750 cu/m per sec of water or during the rainy season 12750 cu/m/sec. So pretty much everywhere you look there are falls gushing out alot of water. The falls are on the border of Argentina & Brazil (Paraguay is also up there but no falls) and we saw them over 2 days on both sides. The first side we saw them from was of course Argentina. We got the overnight bus up from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazu. And god what a bus ride!!! It was just under 15 hrs ( ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires November 24th 2005

Arrived back in BA looking forward to the hotter weather and got it with the temp over 30 degrees everyday. We're staying in San Telmo which is the oldest area of BA and tango central. It is a slightly run down area with lots of cool old buildings and plenty of atmosphere and loads of little bars and cafes. Spent our first couple of days back after the wilds of Patagonia, in the shops and looking around San Telmo. We did go see the Madres De Plaza Mayo which are a group of mothers who have been marching around Plaza Mayo every Thursday at 3:30 for an hour since the 'Dirty War' (in the 70's a military dictatorship took over the country and abducted any leftish person who opposed them) in protest over how their sons ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate November 23rd 2005

From BA we flew down south to Patagonia for a week. Flights were very full so that was our time limit and we decided just to stick to El Calafate and see some glaciars and then to El Chalten for some trekking. El Calafate The first day in El Calafate we did a tour where you get in a boat and visit a whole heap of glaciars. The tour was good but long, it takes over an hour to get there then you are on this boat the whole day sailing around looking at icebergs & glaciars (there is alot in the area) and the boat can seem to be so slow at times. But it is quite cool ( I actually mean that literally as well it was FREEZING!!) Anyway you go and check out ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires November 21st 2005

This is just a quick stop in Buenos Aires. We are here for a couple of days and the we fly to Patagonia. We had to get a hotel with cable so Matt could watch the football (Aust V Urugauy). Which of course turned out to be a great thing seeing we won!!! Buenos Aires seems like a really great city. Matt walks around drooling with all the parillas we see (BBQ places). We haven´t done a whole lot, just explore. We did go to the cemetery where Eva Peron (Evita) is buried. She is in her family vault which is in this amazing cemetery. The place has high walls and inside, little streets with family vaults. It is amazing to see. It does sound morbid but you wander around checking these things out. They range ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza November 8th 2005

Sunshine, good food, good wine...without a doubt I can easily say Mendoza has been my fav place so far (we still have Buenos Aires, Patagonia & Rio to go so it could easily change!). We have had just under a week here and i could easily stay longer. Again we haven´t been up to too much as Matt was quite ill when we first got here so I forced him to do nothing to get better (otherwise it spoils my fun!) so we took it easy. Mendoza was detroyed in the late 1800´s by earthquake and fire so as far as the buildings are concerned it is modern, low and on wide streets that are tree-lined. There is obviously a bit of money in the town so it is really pretty. It is also full of ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago November 3rd 2005

We´ll we finally arrived in Chile in a little town called San Pedro de Atacama. After a brief look around at our hostal options which were pretty crap for the money we decided to hop on a night bus down to the coast. We picked up a bus straight away with the Irish boys and Tanya from our Salar tour and made our way down to La Sarena, a little costal town north of Santiago. We relaxed a couple of days on the coast, although the weather was still a little chilly for the beach, before heading on to Santiago. Santiago is a sprawling city of 5million people with the perminently snow capped Andes as a backdrop. We stayed in a little area called Barrio Brasil which is the University quarter so lots of nice little ... read more

Well we left Maryke & Pascal behind and headed down to Uyuni and the salt plains. The trip down was by bus and train. The train wasn´t too bad as the scenery was quite cool, with huge salt lakes and barren desert with mountians in the distance. We did get into Uyuni quite late, so needed to find a bed then get up early in the morning and hoped to find a tour leaving then. Well within 15 minutes of getting into uyuni at 10.30pm we had found both so were very happy! We even had a choice of groups, a mix of europeans or a bunch of irish and a token english girl. We went with the irish. The next day we soon realise we picked well. The irish were a bunch of 4 boys ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz October 26th 2005

We had breakfast and got on an early bus to La Paz. Now Lake Titikaka has Boliva on one side and Peru on the other, owever the penisula with Copacabana on is on the side of Peru, so to get to La Paz we need to go back into Peru or make a small crossing. Of course this is the way to go. Now we assumed there would be a bridge - well we were wrong! We had to get of the bus which was then driven onto a a shallow raft thing (did not look secure at all) and then we caught a boat across. This was well worth the trip alone - seeing these buses just floating across the river! Coming into La Paz was very cool too as it is set in a ... read more
