South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Copacabana October 24th 2005

Well the bus wasn´t too bad, stopped in Puno for a bit and got moved around buses, but crossed the border and made it to Copacabana. Now as you can guess it is not in Rio but Bolivia it is a beach but on Lake Titikaka(highest navigatable lake in the world) - which is massive!! the first day we caught up with Maryke & Pascal, had lunch and went for a wander. We then decided to do email before dinner. While doing this the power went out - for the whole town!!! we had to wander about and luckily found a a candle lit bar that did wood oven pizza which were delicious, as was the beer! It was pretty cool wandering around this village in complete darkness. The next day we went out to Isla ... read more

Well we got back to Cusco last night after a train back from Machu Picchu and what a beautiful train ride, it really is a gorgeous valley. We showered (finally!!!!YAY!) and went to get some food. We were pretty buggered but we wanted to try guinea pig (cuy) and alpaca and so we arranged to meet Rob, Jason, Maryke & Pascal. Maryke & Pascal could not make it (passed out) so the four of us went. We found a nice restaurant and Rob & I ordered alpaca, while Jason & Matt got guinea pig. mmm not sure if the cuy was a good idea. It came out grilled and whole. Head in tact in fact Jason´s was perfect, the ears, jaw intact with a little claw reaching out... Now Jason did try but I thing the ... read more

Day 1 We were picked up and loaded on a bus where we met the rest of the group trekking with us. All seemed very nice. There were the Canadians, 4 Germans, 2 Dutch, 5 Puerto-ricans and a guy from Uragauy ( who got very excited when he found out we were Australian because of the world cup play off and we have to play them next month) We stopped in a town to get some supplies ie water, walking poles, before we started our walk. then we began we first had to pass a check-point. This is because they have a set number (500) of people allowed on the trail at any time. You usually need to register in advance and give your passport details. We had done this a couple of months ago. However ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco October 15th 2005

Well we´ve now been in Cusco for 3 & 1/2 days (and boy did it take a bit to get here...nearly 13 hrs to BA, then another 4.5 to lima and finally another hour to cusco) and have they been worth it! It is recommended that you come & adjust to the altitude here (3310m) before the trek. the first day we were fine, but woke in the middle of the night with a killer headache. the next was a bit hazy and by the third I was ok but Matt was still a little dodgy. today we are both good - thank god as tomorrow we start the trek on the Inka trail! Cusco itself is a gorgeous town. Kind of what I expected with cobbled stone streets and colonial buildings, pretty squares, etc, etc. ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid October 11th 2005

Well we landed safely and got ourselves to our hotel and then of course did what anyone does in Spain - went out for tapas and sangria! It was tuesday night and we were amazed at how many people were out and about, so went bar hopping for a bit, before going to bed. the next day we went sight seeing up to the Palace were something was obviously happening with the amount of people and officials and guards on horses, etc about. We wandered off before suddenly realising that a lot of things were shut and it did not seem to be just for seista. We then discovered it was a national holiday! no wonder there had been so many out on a tuesday night... there ísn´t anything too exciting to say about madrid - ... read more
