Thursday, 29th July Our taxi to take us to the train station was so late it would have given birth (start with a period joke, always goes down well). It didn't matter though because we didn't actually have a train ticket. Buying with TAT means turn up and see what happens apparently. Our 3rd class seat cost 20 baht (40p), maybe we've slightly overpaid those guys yesterday. The train was so hot that we welded to the seats and couldn't get off. At least until the man with the spatula arrived. I spent much of the short journey daring Hayley to sit next to a monk. She refused. She hates a furrowed brow in her direction. At Ayutthaya nobody from our guesthouse was waiting for us as promised. A tuk-tuk took us for free eventually after ... read more

Monday, 26th July And so the second half begins. The infamous 'Asia diaries' as they will come to be known upon my glorious death. For blog readers (thanks by the way) it's business as usual; mindless rants at those who don't deserve it this time with the key difference that I won't put it under the pretense Hayley believes it too. Let's leave the poor girl from being tarnished with that brush. Anywho for me it's a brand new diary, not the beaten, torn and weather-worn notebook used for South America. Better paper does not mean better quality. In truth after a week at home I was a little apprehensive about coming away again. Living out of a backpack for an extended period can really make you appreciate the home comforts. Eventually I came to my ... read more

Wednesday, July 14th In the vein of continuing to bust our budget today we booked onto a Niagara tour. The day started badly with our transfer claiming he was 'outside your building' when he wasn't. Why do they do that? He got there half an hour late. We took a large bus to Niagara which was a couple of hours away. As we arrived, my God was it touristy. Niagara can be seen from the road and thousands were gathered with their cameras. Our tour included the little boat trip so we joined the queue for that, lucky enough to get right through. Just before the boat we were handed bright blue plastic ponchos, miles too big for anyone un-American. We must have looked like Asians in a European (blueberry) condom. The boat was rammed but ... read more

Saturday, July 10th Toronto Blue Jays versus the Boston Red Sox. That's two of the heavyweights of the game we've seen now, both times against Canada's only representatives in the Major League. The Blue Jays are nothing special, but boast good records against the Yanks and Red Sox this year. Last night as we met Mitch for a tasty little dinner in Toronto's restaurant/bar district the Blue Jays were 8-0 down within 4 innings. That might explain a half empty Rogers Centre. Baseball's a funny thing in that respect. With a game a day more or less over the summer months and America's complete coverage of every angle that you could possibly want, including inside the players' trousers as they made that diving catch to the left, there's little reason to regularly fork out the 10 ... read more

Thursday, July 8th Our short stay in NY is over, Amy and Mike have the final tounches on their wedding to plan. Superb hosts, lovely place. Thanks again to both. We arose at 5am (about the same time as Wall Street Mike) to get the tube to Penn Station. I got chatting to some American sportswriter who passed on his views why Americans hate football. Sorry, soccer. Mostly it seemed to be about concentration span/lack of intelligence. He managed to squeeze in the standard "oh bloody 'ell" in a posh English accent. Why do they all do that? Our Amtrak train was comfortable, housing all types including some Amish - never seen those before. They looked over with envy at my DS. I looked over in envy at thier crazy beards and old-timey hats. The view ... read more

Tuesday, July 6th Today a day for the cliches. The stuff you don't do as a local. Rising at a reasonable hour we hit the subway down to Ground Zero. It's been four years since I was here and five since Hayley had been. Not a lot has changed, it's still just a work site; a tribute to bureaucracy no doubt. The pictures look like it will be nice once it's finally complete - we'll probably never get to see it though. This was only a quick stop on the way to the bottom of the island. At our stop, the Statue of Liberty, crowds of people were gathered all in one single line to catch the ferry. Man, we thought the British loved a queue! Does a statue relatively insignificant to either of us warrant ... read more

Sunday, July 4th Happy 'beating the British in the only war they ever lost' day America. Not much more American to do than to head to the baseball we reckon. And due to the huge flood of tickets on the internet the Yankees is as American in tradition and shameless corporatism as it comes. With seats about the same price as a beer we'd be foolish not to! We caught the subway up to the Bronx, getting out directly in front of the Yankees' six month old stadium. It's an absolute commercial haven; everything you can think of with a Yankees logo you can buy. Placemats, plastic cups used to put ice-cream in, sex toys. If there is a buyer, there is a seller. A single beer costs 10 dollars!!! And Americans have it watered down ... read more

Friday, July 2nd The first half of today was spent flying. Oh how I wish I hadn't seen the first episode of Lost on tv yesterday. So superstitious about stuff like that. How much worse it got when the book I am reading stated "the more safe flights I have, statistically the closer I am to a crash." Read that on the plane. When the hour long bumps started and he spotted the lightning over Venezuela, resignation just sat in. That was the first flight. The second was bumpier. But we made it. Into JFK. The turbulence robbed of us sleep and we were irritable with a capital F**K. Literally the sight of South Americans was winding us up, and the customs queue was 90 minutes. What a ridiculous joke America can be. 15,000 more security ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores June 25th 2010

viernes, 25 de junio Our last bus in South America, at least for this trip. Not necessarily something we'll miss although it could have been so much worse. We headed for Lima, way too early for our flight in 6 days. Thanks STA. Coming through the district of San Isidro Lima liked like the place sh*thole was before it cleaned itself up a bit. Fortunately for us we had located ourselves in Miraflores - much nicer. And outside of Central Lima. It reminds of Recoleta in Buenos Aires i.e. lots of nice houses and BIG gates. There are no dogs on the street either, perfect. It's clean and restaurants are plentiful if generic. Could be okay. Final stretch and I got the sh*ts for the first time. martes, 22 de junio An amazing breakfast bap and into Ica to catch the bus to Pisco. We know it's not far but not quite where to go. It's okay the conductor knows he has our ticket. Oh. No. He doesn't. That stop half an hour ago was ours. And he doesn't speak English? WHAT THE F**K IS HE SAYING??!! Literal translation (or what we did anyway): "Get off the bus on the middle of a busy highway right in the middle of the desert, then try and run across the road with 2.5 stone backpacks whilst cars belt past at 60mph on the side of the road you are otherwise unused to, after which try and communicate with the ticket auditor (who also doesn't speak a word of your mother tongue) and explain the situation ... read more
