Woke to another glorious blue sky day. We are finding it hard to believe that we have been so lucky in finding our 2012 summer even if we have had to wait until September. This lovely weather seems to be all across France and England but a quick check on the forecast says that the southern part of France should be great for at least the next 10 days but the UK will not fare as well. At a roasting 31 degrees today we won’t be too upset if it the temperature drops by a couple of degrees. It can get quite hot in a Tandy. Had to cover my shoulders for the scooter ride today as the sun got me a little yesterday and even hotter today. We went west along the island to ... read more

Early (ish – we are on holiday !) start to the day as we were visiting the lovely market in La Flotte which is mornings only and very busy. There are two excellent fish stalls but unfortunately we don’t recognize many varieties of fish on sale and also have the problem of not wanting to prepare anything too ‘fish smelly’ in the Tandy. I decided to take the easy option and buy sea bass. The first stall didn’t have any (I discovered this only after accidentally jumping the queue to the indignation of the French lady at the front). The second stall did so I pointed at a nice plump fish and asked for it to be filleted. Oops really should have checked the price first. So expensive I am not going to say here how ... read more

I only realised as I sat down to type this that we came to La Flotte (and from Coulon) on the same date last year. Hadn’t realised how closely our route this time is taking us to last September’s but it will change soon as we are heading ever southwards. As last year we realised we needed to get to the campsite early if we were to get a pitch. There are lots of campsites on the Ile de Ré but we wanted the same one we used last year, La Grainetiere at La Flotte as we really liked it and it’s location. http://www.la-grainetiere.com/ We had originally thought we might spend a night in La Rochelle on the way here as Bob had found an aire which would have allowed us to spend the day ... read more
Rivedoux-Plage - so typical of Ile de Re. Love the colours of this island.

There was a notice saying 'no swimming' but to be honest would have been tricky anyway as water was strangely absent

Had a pleasantly disturbed sleep. There seemed to be owls all round, hooting and toowit toowooing at each other, and as it was such a lovely clear night the sounds carried right across the campsite. I note that now as I type this the evening serenade has already started. This really is a lovely place, beautifully green and very peaceful, except for the owls that is. What a glorious day. Exactly as forecast, summer has finally arrived and long may it last. First day I have put on shorts and sun-top as soon as I got up and the first day I have needed suntan lotion. We scootered into Coulon, only a couple of miles, along the river and followed a couple of 'no entry', 'locals only' signs to the riverbank where we parked the scooter. ... read more

Time to move on, south-west this time in the general direction of the sea but stopping before we get to the coast. A cross-country route, avoiding Poitiers, through miles and miles of arable farmland most just harvested. Never seen so many bails stacked up / such enormous ‘hay stacks’. We were a little puzzled. If some of this was for winter silage then where on earth are the animals. Not a cow in sight (and we would have seen them if they had been there as the area is very flat) just never ending fields of golden stubble with a few patches of enormous sunflowers and the occasional vine mixed in. The weather got better the further south we went and was really quite warm, for the first time, when we stopped for lunch by ... read more

This is a lovely campsite, very green, very peaceful and our quite privately located pitch has a view to the spires and towers of the medieval city as well as one step away access to the sanitaires. Add in a pool and electricity and the wifi mast just 5 metres away and all for £13.33 a night. Today is the first day we have not been driving anywhere so we got up gently, collected fresh baguette and croissant from reception, showered and then strolled along the river into town. Weather exactly as forecast, cloudy but no rain but 22° so quite pleasant for a walk round the city even if not for getting a tan. I am still waiting for my “summer of 2012” suntan, I still have my hopes for later in the week, ... read more

Great start to the day. As I walked across the campsite to get the baguette from reception I startled a green woodpecker. Always a treat to see. Another cross-country day, this time entirely all under my non-digital direction with the aid of the French road atlas. Have discovered to my horror that I need a magnifying glass to read road numbers on the atlas. Not as a result of my recent bleeding eye but just a change in my near sight through ‘age’. Will have to get some proper reading glasses in future I think when my bleeding eye has settled down anyway. For now I will manage and I did today. My ‘eye’ did not stop me spotting four young deer in a forest as we drove past, another magic moment. We drove down ... read more

We were up and off quite early today, by 8.40, and only just caught the bread van which visited the aire at 8.30. (I have made a note of that for future visits to this very conveniently placed Aire). Quite a longish drive ahead and we hate doing it all by motorway so Bob had planned 1/3 motorway and the rest country roads. Had a bit of a fight with Clarissa Tomtom a couple of times when she directed us to fast dual carriageways especially when there was a perfectly good and lovely country road which followed the same route. She also tried to take us through a village which was not wide enough for us, just to shave 100 metres off the route. Good thing we have a road atlas as well as her. ... read more

So far so very good. All the rain which has fallen has fallen when we have been inside and a couple of times has kindly waited until we were just safely back inside before landing. We are beginning to feel blessed. We had a very short drive to our next stopping stop at Le Crotoy on the Baie de la Somme. Bob chose a scenic country route to get there, which was lovely, as the countryside in this part of northern France is beautifully pastoral with lots of neat and tidy villages filled with attractive buildings and an abundance of flowers. We stopped to fill up with fuel (diesel) which works out at over 20p less than in the UK and I popped into the Carrefour for a few French essentials, cooking wine, wine for ... read more

We’ve now had just over 2 months at home following our June trip to Ireland. That was cut a little short by my attack of volcanic blood-pressure resulting in a night spent in Tralee hospital and we returned home a week earlier than planned to get it fully sorted out. Happy to say my BP is now consistently excellent. The English summer of 2012 didn’t start at all until August and has been characterised by lots and lots of wet stuff. Even Uttoxeter got flooded one very wet Friday in July and I drove the car along roads which were more like rivers. We’ve had a busy 9 weeks at home. First of all to my utter delight, I welcomed my daughter Jenny and family back from a 2 year sejourn in Melbourne. So ... read more
