Rain in the night and still raining when we got up. First we have had for over a week and in fact the first daytime rain. We have been very lucky ! Fortunately we had expected it so everything was tucked away in the dry under the awning. Not a very early start today as we weren’t going anywhere until and unless the rain stopped. Sue and Keith got on their way up to the Dordogne and we settled down with our books for a lazy morning. We were thinking that if the rain carried on we would stay for another day as we have some ‘spare’ days in the plan for the south coast. Fortunately though, after a final heavy downpour the rain stopped as suddenly as it had started and within 5 minutes the ... read more

First thing to do today. Trudge up to reception to see if I can use the extortionately expensive wifi I have paid for. No. Not working. Complained to reception that if they charge so much they should make sure it works. Point taken, but, no refund offered for my unused €4 worth of time. Otherwise excellent campsite downgraded in my personal records by 1 point. Second thing – look in astonishment at the massacre which has taken place in the field at the bottom of the campsite (the combine harvester carried on working well after dark had fallen). Those lovely sunflowers, albeit with yellow petals nearly all gone and seeds just ripe for the birds and the picking, have all been Decapitated. All that is left is a field full of tall stalks. Next thing to ... read more

Today we have had a lazy day. Too lazy even to get the scooter out of the garage so we had to walk into La Romieu where we had a bit of a stroll, looked in through the gates at the beautiful Unesco World Heritage protected abbey, but didn’t go in as we did that in full last visit then stopped for a leisurely coffee before walking back to the campsite armed with the obligatory fresh baguette for our lunch. We could have scootered round the area, there are lots of lovely towns and villages to visit - Condom , Larrasingle , Montreal , Seviac , Fources , Lectoure , Saint-Puy but we have visited them all in our previous 2003/2008 trips so as I said, we lazily did not a lot of anything today. ... read more

Time to move on, almost directly south, over the Vezere and then the Dordogne river and down to the Ger in beautiful pastoral Gascony. Bob and Clarissa Tomtom had planned a route last night which went in a pretty straight line and took us along roads we had not used before. We were quite surprised by this as we thought we had probably seen all the stretches of the Dordogne that there are to see but we took a road south from Campagne, a rather attractive town on the Vezere, to Siorac-en-Perigord on the Dordogne, and decided we had not been this way before. I am about to correct that, we have been to Siorac before. In June 2003 we stayed in a gite in Mouzens just over the river, with Nigel and Lynne and ... read more

A perfect day for a ride on the scooter, following the Vezere river, to Montignac. Glorious sunshine, no need for umbrellas or coats, only suntan lotion and hats. Just 8 miles and a pleasant ride with not much traffic and occasional cooling shade from the trees. We drove through Montignac last year en route for Sarlat from the campsite and made a note to visit it this year. It straddles the Vezere river with old parts of the town, half-timbered building on both sides of the river. Had a lovely stroll round the historic quarter partly following a tourist circuit when we happened to spot the signs, and stopped for a coffee in a bar overlooking the river and later, lunch at a creperie. It was so hot we had to move seats as we were ... read more

A busy Saturday on the roads to the coast today so we were pleased to be heading inland. We saw a mile long traffic jam queuing for a roundabout near Rochefort and concluded it was holiday traffic. On such a gorgeous sunny day not surprising if the while of France is heading for the coast. We left Ile de Réa a little reluctantly as we always love visiting the island and this last three days have been wonderfully relaxing, made more so by the fantastic weather. We got on very well with our Netherlands neighbours on one side. The English couple of the other side however were really quite rude and didn’t speak or even nod a good morning, to us, or anyone else for that matter, which is not at all the way to behave ... read more

Woke to another glorious blue sky day. We are finding it hard to believe that we have been so lucky in finding our 2012 summer even if we have had to wait until September. This lovely weather seems to be all across France and England but a quick check on the forecast says that the southern part of France should be great for at least the next 10 days but the UK will not fare as well. At a roasting 31 degrees today we won’t be too upset if it the temperature drops by a couple of degrees. It can get quite hot in a Tandy. Had to cover my shoulders for the scooter ride today as the sun got me a little yesterday and even hotter today. We went west along the island to ... read more

Early (ish – we are on holiday !) start to the day as we were visiting the lovely market in La Flotte which is mornings only and very busy. There are two excellent fish stalls but unfortunately we don’t recognize many varieties of fish on sale and also have the problem of not wanting to prepare anything too ‘fish smelly’ in the Tandy. I decided to take the easy option and buy sea bass. The first stall didn’t have any (I discovered this only after accidentally jumping the queue to the indignation of the French lady at the front). The second stall did so I pointed at a nice plump fish and asked for it to be filleted. Oops really should have checked the price first. So expensive I am not going to say here how ... read more

I only realised as I sat down to type this that we came to La Flotte (and from Coulon) on the same date last year. Hadn’t realised how closely our route this time is taking us to last September’s but it will change soon as we are heading ever southwards. As last year we realised we needed to get to the campsite early if we were to get a pitch. There are lots of campsites on the Ile de Ré but we wanted the same one we used last year, La Grainetiere at La Flotte as we really liked it and it’s location. http://www.la-grainetiere.com/ We had originally thought we might spend a night in La Rochelle on the way here as Bob had found an aire which would have allowed us to spend the day ... read more

Had a pleasantly disturbed sleep. There seemed to be owls all round, hooting and toowit toowooing at each other, and as it was such a lovely clear night the sounds carried right across the campsite. I note that now as I type this the evening serenade has already started. This really is a lovely place, beautifully green and very peaceful, except for the owls that is. What a glorious day. Exactly as forecast, summer has finally arrived and long may it last. First day I have put on shorts and sun-top as soon as I got up and the first day I have needed suntan lotion. We scootered into Coulon, only a couple of miles, along the river and followed a couple of 'no entry', 'locals only' signs to the riverbank where we parked the scooter. ... read more
