Left the aire at Beaugency in good time and headed straight to the Intermarche as need to do shopping today as it is Sunday tomorrow. Stocked up on a few ‘take-home’ essientials such as basil and walnut oil, to see me through for few months, and with lots of bottles of wine for Bob’s cellar as he is really getting fed up with the UK wine prices. Destination for the night was Les Andelys and I chose the route as last year I found it boring which means I fall asleep. I managed to chose a route which must contain more speed bumps per mile than any other in France. And that not helped by a road surface that was so bad in places that speed bumps were totally unnecessary. Poor Tandy was feeling quite shaken ... read more

We have been to Chenonceau Chateau once before but we remembered it as a lovely chateau to visit to decided to make it our stopping spot on the drive to Beaugency today. It took us a couple of hours to get there but there is a carpark area dedicated to campervans so no problem parking. It was pretty busy as this is one of the most popular French tourist spots. The gardens are lovely, beautifully planted in both main areas. I had rather expected one garden to be in Autumnal colours but both were in pastel shades. We walked round both gardens and then toured the chateau along with quite a lot of other tourists. I have included several photos of the floral arrangements, especially for Lynne as I hope they will give her inspiration. We ... read more

A definite autumnal feel to the day when I opened the Tandy door to check the weather this morning. More leaves on the ground and the campsite grass was very damp. Had a lovely visitor just across the river, a massive Grey Heron who perched himself on a tree trunk and sat watching the river waiting for his breakfast to swim past. We made a leisurely start as only had the small town and its chateau to visit. I totally confused Bob once we were in the town as he, having forgotten his watch, relied on me for a time check. I am accustomed to looking at Tandy’s clock and adding an hour as that is still on UK time. When Bob asked what time it was as we were having a coffee I automatically added ... read more

We’ve left the sea behind and ventured inland. It seems my suspicions were correct. While we have been enjoying some quite reasonable weather on the coast, inland it has been raining. And raining it was today, for quite a good part of our drive. We used dual carriageways to get us round and past Bordeaux and it was drizzling all the way. Once clear of the city we changed to quieter roads as we drove due north up through the vineyards. We went round Cognac and a few other towns which got in our way and through a few smaller villages. Sunflowers all the way today, they look as if they are ready to have their heads chopped off. We only stopped for fuel and lunch as it wasn’t a very fast drive and we had ... read more

The weather is being exceedingly kind to us. Yes it rained, but only when we were tucked away in the Tandy for the night and it had stopped when we got up in the morning. Ok it is no longer gloriously hot with blue sky, but, the sun does keep popping out for a while and there are quite a few pretty blue bits among the clouds. We decided to risk a walk into town and took our very rarely used 10 year-old mac-in-a-sacs with us as insurance. We needn’t have worried, as usual we didn’t need them. We walked into Lacanau-Ocean from the campsite along the road, 15 minutes away. Not a lot there except a very much end of season surfing seaside area set of shops. About 75% were already shuttered up for end ... read more

Left the lovely mountains behind today on a clear sunny, if a little chilly, almost autumnal, morning. The drive was nothing like as exciting as the ones of recent days as we took the easiest route with no dramatic mountain passes to cross. Down the river gorge to Argeles-Gazost and then to Lourdes. All along the river valley we could see the evidence of the June flooding and all that the river had uprooted in its path. At Lourdes we left the last of the lovely mountain backdrop behind us having managed to bypass the centre. We’ve visited before, well worth one visit but there is no need to visit again. We didn’t find anywhere of particular interest to visit en route and didn’t have time to go out of our way. The drive was through ... read more

Exactly as forecast it rained in the night, most of the night in fact, but all dried up by the time we woke. The mountain tops had all disappeared in the cloud and it was quite chilly until midday so we stayed in the Tandy having a lazy morning. By noon the sun had broken through and was burning the cloud away so the scooter came out of the garage and we headed down to the town, Luz-st-Sauveur, at the foot of the hill. Being lunchtime on a Sunday it was no surprise to find almost all the shops closed. It was a surprise to find nowhere to get a drink and a snack. One bar and one hotel and that was it. Very few people about and very few cars. I suggested we scooter up ... read more

A truly amazing drive today across the mountains of the Hautes-Pyrénées. We concluded at the end of it that we had been most fortunate in the weather. Rain had been forecast but we didn’t see any, only low cloud (very) as we approached the summit of the Col de Tournalet from the East and otherwise glorious blue sky and sunshine. What could be better for a scenic drive across, over, up, down and round mountains. I remembered as we were driving along taking in the wonderful views just why I had asked Bob to include the Pyrénées on this trip. The first half of the drive didn’t include any mountain passes but we drove through lovely countryside in the Ariège region and some really pretty villages. The first village which we admired, Bordes sur Lez, was ... read more

Not too far to drive today. We stopped in Tarrascon-sur-Ariege where in 2003 we stayed on a lovely site by the river (well remembered as Bob spent the afternoon putting the scooter back together after it fell off the rack as we were driving through the Pyrenees in Spain). We fed the Tandy some fuel and then carried on to Foix. This looked a lovely place to visit but definitely not today, in a motorhome. There was a big market right through the centre of town and a traffic jam. Vehicles parked everywhere and certainly nowhere for us so we had to carry on through. A very pretty drive but by this point a bit damp as we drove through some very low cloud which the windscreen wipers declared to be rain. We are ... read more

Definite change to the weather now. The sun has lost its heat and the blue sky has gained clouds. A certain inevitability about it as we get further into September and certainly now as we have left the coast behind and driven up into the mountains. We got away pretty early this morning, through the gates of the campsite before 9am.We were going to avoid Perpignan but needed to find a supermarket so actually ended up driving right through the middle after doing a big shop at a massive le Clerc’s. Bob has started a collection of wine to take home as the price at home has gone up so much in the past year. Main criteria for inclusion in his crate is under €3. 2 years ago that limit was €2.From Perpignan we ... read more
