Our two days at the beach were planned as relaxation time as we knew the other days in cities would be hectic. Woke to a view of the sea through the bedroom window and the sun was streaming in. We had a leisurely breakfast and then took a stroll along the rather superb, wide promenade which runs right along the seafront through the town. Not many people out on the street at this time as really, as we discovered, it was a little bit too hot for walking in the open, full sun. Back to the hotel to change into swim wear and we went down to the beach to find a sunbed. Our hotel has a designated little stretch of “private” beach which basically means the sunbeds in that area are free to Novotel guests. ... read more

01/03/2014 12 hour Train journey from Hue to Nha Trang Up bright and early for our taxi to the station. We had a bag full of food as previous experience of Asian train food in Indonesia had meant I spent a night in the bathroom so taking no chances. Bananas from breakfast bar, biscuits, bottles of juice and (non)-iced tins of coffee all to hand. We were glad of them later when we saw exactly what was served on the trolleys which passed us about 3 times during the journey. Glad we were sticking to biscuits. Half way along a local, after a discussion with his fellow travellers asked us why we were not eating dinner. I politely replied we weren’t hungry ! We had booked the soft seat option on the train, all air-conditioned. Train ... read more

What a lovely day for a boat trip. Glorious blue sky all day and winter is definitely over now in this part of Vietnam. We can almost see the leaves coming out on the trees as we watch. They will look fantastic in a month’s time when all the blossom is out. After breakfast we took a taxi back down to the Dragon Boat station and found our boat, number 0367. We wholeheartedly recommend this boat and the family which owns and run it. We have promised the daughter (named Jolly Tran we think) that we would tell people to book this boat and we are doing so. Our friendly boat owner’s daughter came running up as we found the boat, she had waited to go to school until we were safely arrived. Her dad got ... read more

Today according to the plan is a Culture day. So after breakfast we headed across the bridge to the Imperial City and the Citadel. On foot as not very far to walk from our hotel at all. Once there we were accosted by a hoard of Cyclo drivers all offering to take us round the city, very cheap, too far to walk etc etc. We smiled and waved them all away but then one, a little more persistent told us we needed a ticket to get into the Citadel and we thought he was taking us to get one. He and his friend were wearing an official uniform and had a pass so we presumed they were genuine. Ha ha, the Salts were badly duped this time. Yes the first part of the agreed one hour ... read more

Left Hanoi, which we had enjoyed so much and took the hotel taxi to the airport. Flight book-in with Vietnam Airlines was a vast improvement on our previous one and we were checked in, baggage dropped within 15 minutes. Had not been quite careful enough with my packing and my nail scissors, as they often do, had found their way from my suitcase sponge bag back into my handbag. Confiscated. Oddly, they failed to find the liquid ice-packs which Bob had accidentally left in his carry on bag and I’m sure they were far more of a potential security risk than our bottle of water which we also had to leave behind ! Flight to Hue was only an hour and it took off exactly on time. At Hue it was strange not to have to ... read more

An early start as we were picked up outside hotel at 8am. Fortunately hotel breakfast hours are 6.30-9.30 so time for breakfast first which is good as like to start the day with a plateful of lovely fresh tropical fruits. A long drive in our small 20 seater coach. 4 hours in all though we stopped for almost an hour half way along for a leg stretch at a craft showroom – which we assumed was government sponsored as we stopped at a different, but very similar one on the way back. Some very nice carvings on sale but certainly would not fit either in our cases or our weight allowance. We priced some lacquered bowls and they were 3 times what we paid for very similar in Hanoi so we didn’t buy anything. It was ... read more

Woken at 7am by a loud speaker just outside our room. It seems that the Vietnamese government likes to give a daily lecture to its people and there is no way to avoid it. Speakers on every corner of the city. Once we had breakfasted, as we had had a good walk round old Hanoi yesterday we decided to explore further afield. First of all to the Hoam Kien Lake in the centre of the city just below the Old Quarter, and then down the West side, a pleasant stroll under some amazing old trees which line the bank. After a coffee we headed for the Cathedral, Notre Dame a copy of that in Paris, as this is in the French Quarter of the city, Vietnam having been colonised by the French as part of Indochine ... read more

Up at 4.30am, just time for a quick drink and then off to Don Muaeng airport, courtesy of a lift from Jeremy. We were there by 5am, had already checked in online and just needed to drop off our luggage before finding somewhere for breakfast. Ha ha. That process didn’t work with Air Asia. Failed to find any online check in or baggage drop and had no other option but to join the total chaos which was the undivided and non-specific queue for the check-in counters. We asked two members of staff about our online check-in status but they just waved us into the same queue. Movement along the queue was slow, to put it mildly. On a couple of occasions we didn’t move at all for 15 minutes. Then we realised that people were sneaking ... read more

19th Feb to 22nd Feb Leaving wet, wet England behind for a few weeks to enjoy some Far Eastern adventures. A goodly part of Southern England has been pretty well under water since Christmas but at least the floods seem to have started to recede and the rain has at last eased. January has been the wettest month ever. Fortunately, unlike last year, it hasn’t been really cold this winter and in most cases it has been positively mild. Just before we left home the garden decided Spring was starting and as well as all the snowdrops, many crocus were also out and the daffodils were certainly thinking about it. Expect we will have full Springtime when we get home in 3 weeks as long, that is, as the weather doesn’t decide we need a cold ... read more

A little disappointed when we set off from Les Andelys to find the sun had gone in. The glorious sunset over the River Seine of the previous evening had promised a lovely day but sadly, almost as soon as we set off, some heavy low cloud descended and hid all the lovely blue sky. No problem though, not as if we were planning to sit outside sunbathing, we had to drive North to the coast for our ferry. We took a cross-country route, avoiding motorways and big towns. Had a lucky break when we stopped at the Intermarche for fuel. I nipped into the store for bread and found the plates I had been looking for, for the last 3 weeks. Square, glass and they make desserts, any dessert, look brilliant. Bob made a good suggestion ... read more
