It's a charming hill town with plenty of tourist shops and pleasant walks.... read more

This time I visited the Colosseum, which was worth it since I arrived early and it wasn't too too touristy in May. But in July and August? No way. Though it would be difficult not to 'when in Rome.' Besides, there are dilapidated ruins throughout the city that could be more interesting to visit than some of the main sites, since you'd have them all to yourself. The forum and chariot track always requires some imagination, which isn't too difficult considering the history there.... read more

Naples is pretty dirty and third world, but the sloppy pizza is a treat and there are cleaner coastal towns to visit, and of course the ruins at Pompeii which are as fascinating as one would expect.... read more

Fields of lavender are remembered in a painting still hanging in my bedroom. Extract was sold in the streets and I bought a bottle for a friend but never saw her again. There were rocky beaches with pristine water. I snorkeled here for the first time and avoided sea urchins.... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik June 3rd 2002

I took the night ferry from Ancona, Italy. We stopped at Split briefly before continuing down the coast to Dubrovnik. There weren't anywhere near as many tourists in early June as when I revisited in mid-summer a few years later: traveling during the shoulder seasons is the way to go here. Dubrovnik quickly became a favorite city, mostly for its position - azure Mediterranean waters cradling the Old Town, with beaches on the edges and steep arid hills arching above. The marble streets and terra cotta roofs (at this point some still destroyed by the recent war) add to the charm, and its proximity to the islands makes it a perfect base for a week.... read more

These caves are interesting, but if time is short in Slovenia, I'd skip them unless you have a chance to hear a choir perform while visiting.... read more

I arrived there via a night train from Austria, found a private room, and then enjoyed perhaps the longest sleep of my life - about 15 hours. So all I remember of the city is that it was young, optimistic, and seemed to really love ice cream.... read more

On the train I met a dentist and we spoke in a common language, barely intelligible German. The town is quaint and charming but might be overrun with tourists by now. The beer from nearby Czeky Budejovice is some of the best in the world. The rafting trip on the lazy Vitava River was relaxing and picturesque.... read more

Prague is truly impressive. I'd just do whatever possible to minimize the impact of the tourist hordes - visit in shoulder or off seasons, stay somewhere in the periphery, or visit smaller towns afterward. Otherwise, the experience can be theme park-like during high season - similar to the central tourist areas in Rome, Florence, Paris, Moscow, Barca, etc. However, every one is there for good reason.... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Bad Gastein May 13th 2002

Bad Gastein is a comfortable resort town that works well for those on a backpacking circuit who just want to be in the mountains and do day hikes. It's always a bit defeating to get to take a long hike to the top of a mountain only to see ski lifts, but the views were impressive and the air was fresh.... read more
