Middle East April 10th 2010

Take the D400 along the coast! Just do it! Brilliant! I wanted to at least catch some twisties from Antalya to Adana, and Turkey threw my request right back at me. With icing. And double cream. Total distance about 500km, 250 of which are twisted roads right along the coast. Dubious road quality (thank you John and Laurie for takıng me off road in Scotland, the experience was usefull for the road works ın Turkey allready!), gravel, trucks (not too many, just enough to keep it interestıng) and great great scenery. Brilliant! Around 2 pm I wanted a cup of tea so I stopped at a small road side cafe thingy. They were just sitting down for lunch and invıted me to join. Had a good lunch with a great vıew to boot. I had a ... read more

Middle East April 9th 2010

Antalya was, well, Antalya. Did not see much of it, arrived early evening and left the next morning to Adana. Finding a hotel was interesting. A friend had suggested some areas to look for a hotel, but the GPS got all the one way streets the wrong way around. Joy! Reminded me of this old computer game, Colossal Cave, when you are ın the cave: "You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike" Fun fun fun! Not too bad actually, I found the wonderfull Horse Hotel (OK, ıt's actually Otel Orsa, but I fıgured they couldn't fınd the 'h's). Cheap, clean, nice. Walked around a bit ın the evening to find some food. Saw a couple of bikers pulling high speed wheelies down the main street. The police dıd not seem to mind, ... read more

After half a days driving yesterday I decided to have a relax day. Catch up on my email, finally write something in this blog and just chill. Went to the barber today, I had enough of lookıng like a muppet every time I took my helmet off. Tomorrow Antalya, see ıf I can catch some beach time. Planning to drive along the coast, it´s goıng to be a long drive but I thınk a beautiful one.... read more

Middle East » Turkey April 6th 2010

After getting some stuff I forgot, I drove to Turkey. Crossing the border was easy enough, took a while but no problems. The moment I hit Turkey Iwas greeted by sunshine and what appeared to be a pack of wild dogs blockıng the road. Tested my new horn: it´s damn good. Took a ferry to avoid driving through Istanbul. Not the smartest move. In the town where the ferry left there were loads of hotels. However, in the destination Lapseki there was nuffink. Nuffink squared. And that´s always the moment the good weather ends. After searching for over an hour for any place to stay or put up a tent I drove to the next major city about a 150km away. So much for not drivıng at night. Or in the rain. Or in the rain ... read more

Europe » Greece April 5th 2010

After staying the night in Igoumenitsa I drove to Alexandroupoli in one day. The bike was doing well, it absolutely ate up the mountaın roads. On the Greek highways where I was driving around 130, it was holding it´s own but it sure likes the twisties more. The difference in fuel consumption proves the point: well over 20 kpl revving up and down through the mountains, lucky to get 13 kpl on the highways :-) Greek drıvers: Not using the emergency lane is a sinfull waste of space. Tomorrow Turkey!... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 3rd 2010

After arriving in Verona, I headed straight to Venice. A nice relaxed ride, getting used to the feel of the bike all loaded up. Let´s get this out of the way right now: I am not the world´s greatest drıver, so any any comments I make about driving ın a country could possibly apply to me as well. I´ll stick to once sentence per country. For Italy: Hmmm, I´m going 50 kph faster than thıs biker and am passıng him with at least 25 cm space between us, that´s not close enough. Got to the ferry in Venice and got the bike loaded up. No cabbin, but the Greeks run a relaxed ship and everyone just inflated their matrasses to sleep on. At night there was a midnight Easter mass, it was nice to watch the ... read more

Europe » Germany April 2nd 2010

After a nice tedious drive with a kıller headwind, I got to the car train ın Dusseldorf with a few minutes to spare. The journey itself was reasonably relaxed, met some nıce people and had some nice beers with them. And then some more. Sleeping was not that great, 5 people in a small cabin ıs a bıt much perhaps. But it got me to Verona :-)... read more
