In our cabin mailbox arrived a warning notice: our port call at Key West would be during the annual Fantasy Fest. Passengers were cautioned they might see some outrageous things ashore! Carnival Paradise docked at the Key West Naval Pier. It is the pier of the former Key West Naval Station and still remains on Naval property. In the basin, special operations forces were swimming in full combat gear getting ready for their 24-hour endurance swim. Shuttle busses were required to transport passengers from the ship through the Naval installation and to downtown Key West. There are a number of attractions at key West. Of course, I wanted to see the Southernmost Point marker. But there are also the Truman White House and Ernest Hemingway house. The bus left us off at Mallory Square. There we ... read more

The first day out on our cruise to Cuba was a sea day. It was October 23, a week from Halloween, and Halloween hi-jinx were in full swing aboard. The Atrium was decorated throughout the cruise with a pumpkin admiral and other seasonal items. At Noon activities got underway out on deck. An assistant cruise director donned a witch’s hat as MC. A passenger pumpkin carving contest led things off. Afterward, a member of the galley staff showed how a professional carved a pumpkin. (Similar to an ice carving demonstration.) Finally, there was the Mummy Wrap contest and dance to Monster Mash. In the afternoon the first of two orientation lectures on Cuba led by Heidi was held. Heidi Siefkas had travelled to Cuba several times and written a book, Cubicle to Cuba about her experiences ... read more

Ybor City is the old cigar making neighborhood of Tampa. In recent years Ybor City has undergone a revitalization and is a destination to enjoy the cuisines of the immigrants who worked here and roam the old buildings that made it a community. People from Cuba, Italy and Spain came here to find work in the cigar factories. Our exploration of Ybor City began with dinner on Sunday evening at the Columbia Restaurant. The restaurant, a fixture in Ybor City, was founded it in 1905 as a corner bar and coffee shop and expanded by the 1930s into the present-day establishment. The distinctive exterior of Columbia Restaurant is covered in colorful tiles. It features Cuban cuisine, and so our introduction to Cuba began. I enjoyed the Boliche Criollo (roasted beef stuffed with chorizo). Monday morning we ... read more

Morning sightseeing saw us boarding he coach for a drive out to the Novy Port and Westerplatte sections, at the mouth of the Vistula (Wisła) River, Here, the river that unites Poland north to south empties into the Baltic Sea. It was at the Weserplatte on 1 September 1939 that Germany began its invasion of Poland. Although Danzig was considered a free city, support for Germany ran high. Poland had earlier established military transit depot on the Westerplatte and this facility was besieged for seven days. Shipbuilding has been a major Gdasńk industry since 1856. The current Gdasńk Shipyard traces its history to the Kaiserliche Werft Danzig that built ships and submarines for the Imperial German Navy. After World War II, it was known as the Lenin Shipyard. It was here in 1980 that workers went ... read more

What a surprise was in store at Gdańsk. I knew something of Gdańsk and its history as the former Danzig. My impression had been of a heavily industrialized and port city. It was where the Solidarność movement had started among the shipyard workers in 1980. Our hotel, the Radisson Blue, was situated right on the Długi Targ, the Lange Markt elongated market square of medieval Gdańsk. The Gdańsk of the medieval and Hanseatic eras has been exceptionally well preserved and restored. The Medieval historic center was heavily damaged during World War II, but was rebuilt in the years after. After checking in, the group assembled for a walking tour of the Long Market. It begins at the Green Gate (Zielona Brama) leading from the Green Bridge over the Motława ... read more

This morning in Toruń was a walking tour of the old town. As I mentioned, Toruń was Monika's home, so she was an excellent guide. The group again assembled at the Monastery Gate. The plaza between the gate and the river is Naval School Square (Skwer Oficerskiej Szkoły Marynarki Wojennej). (The Polish naval academy was located in Toruń in 1921-1938 and housed in the barracks that is now the Hotel Bulwar.) Upon entering the gate this time, we turned to the left. Now we were on the inside of the city wall we passed walking from the hotel. The Leaning Tower at a corner of the city wall leans out over the hotel parking lot. Inside the wall it takes the form of a four story residential building. Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was born in Toruń and ... read more

It was an interesting drive north from Poznań to Toruń, passing through Paczkowo with its rustic railway station, Gniezno with its twin towered church, and then Pierzyska for a highway rest stop. A Polish Army airfield appeared at Inowrocław. Upon crossing the Vistula (Wisła) River we arrived in Toruń around 4:30 p.m. The Hotel Bulwar was a renovated and modernized 19th century Prussian military barracks (Kaserne). (Toruń was under German dominion from the Second Partition in 1793 to 1918.) Directly across from the hotel were the remains of the the town walls. The 14th century Leaning Tower (Krzywa Wieża) loomed over the parking lot. Toruń was founded by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century. Toruń has been famous as a center for making gingerbread, or piernik, since the 13th century. An attraction in town is ... read more

Monika, our Collette tour courier, hastened the group along as we prepared to leave Wrocław for Torruń. We would be stopping for lunch at Poznań, but we must make haste getting there and arrive before noon. She would not say why. En route we made a hurried rest stop at a travel plaza near Lipnow. A curiosity here were the statues of European Bison placed in an adjacent field. I'm not sure why there were placed here, but will note that the European Bison is Poland's national animal. In the event, to coach reached Poznań at 11:30. Plenty of time for us to our way to the Market Square, Stary Rynek. The secret was revealed. We were here to see the Town Hall clock in operation. The automaton clock on the Ratusz tower performs at Noon ... read more

The Collette tour offered an optional evening excursion to Świdnica to see the Church of Peace. Of course, Susan and I wanted to see it. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site. The group left Wrocław about 3:30 p.m. and reached Świdnica an hour later. The route led past the scenic foothills of Lower Silesia, though the ranges remained in the distance. The Churches of Peace (Friedenskirchen or Kościoły Pokoju) were built following the Peace of Wesphalia in 1648. (The treaty that ended the Thirty Years' War.) Protestants in Silesia were permitted to build three churches outside of city walls, in Świdnica, Jawor and Glogau. They had to be built of wood and clay, with no spires or towers, lest they be required ... read more

Today began with a morning sightseeing tour of Wrocław with a local guide. The group boarded our motorcoach over on Nowy Świat, along the Odra River. (Coaches are not allowed along Kiełbaśnicza where the hotel was located. I liked that name--Kielbasa Street!) The coach drove us over to the Exhibition Grounds. The Wrocław Exhibition Grounds opened in 1911 in a then far eastern part of the city. The centerpiece is still the Centennial Hall (Hala Stulecia, originally Jahrhunderthalle). (The centennial was that of the proclamation by Frederick William III of Prussia for the Prussian people to resist Napoleon.) The modernist exhibition hall designed by architect Max Berg and opened in 1913 was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006. It still looks like a modern round sports arena, or something one might encounter at Epcot. ... read more
