The overnight bus trip from Neuquen north to San Rafael passed quickly, I think we both slept quite a bit despite the lashing rain which we drove through at some point. We arrived at San Rafael about 8am Sunday morning as the sun was rising. We trundled our bags along to the hotel and went in search of coffee. As in nearly every town or village here the local YPF petrol station has a good cafe. After checking in and showers we did the walkabout. San Rafael is dead flat with lots of cyclists - except during the siesta which seems to last for about four hours during the week and all day Sunday. Some nice buildings and wide boulevards with lots of shade. And the town is a centre of wine production so we had ... read more

South America » Argentina » Neuquén » Villa Pehuenia March 3rd 2008

A holiday within the trip? After Junin we headed further north to Zapala across a more open but empty landscape of vast plateaus between huge crater shaped depressions. It is dinosaur fossil country. From there we turned back west and headed back to the hills to eventually reach Villa Pehuenia. In case you don't know, and why would you, Pehuen is the Mapuche indian word for Araucaria or Monkey Puzzle tree, these grow around here in forests. A bit weird as the older (bigger) ones have bark like an old grey alligator, and they don't really move in the wind. The female trees produce, at this time of year, big pine nuts which are used a lot in the local restaurants. And the nuts taste good too. Villa Pehuenia is a very new village mainly on ... read more

We gave ourselves a late start after the travails of the walk the day before. Leaving Bariloche to start wending our way through the northern parts of the lake district. Picked up another car and drove round the eastern end of Lago Nahuel Huapi and along the northern shore to Villa la Angostura. Another very scenic drive with lots of water, trees and moutain scenery under burning blue skies. Our hotel turned out to be on the lake with gardens down to the beach. We had had good intentions of going out to see the Arrayanes park (another sort of tree) but gave in to the temptations of an afternoon dozing and reading, and eating local trout for dinner. Next day we took the scenic but very very dusty unmade Seven Lakes Road up to San ... read more

After our mini break down south we returned to Bariloche. This time to stay in a really great cabana, two bedrooms, lake views and a mini garden included, all about 4.6km along Av Pioneros, so also away from the hustle and tourist bustle of the town. We ended up spending most evenings in the house, reading, cooking and watching the sun set and the moon rise. Our landlords were great, drank mate with them one afternoon and freshly baked donuts delivered by them the next morning. When we weren´t just chilling out we did some walking: allegedly there is a path, from the road near the house, that leads to the top of Cerro Otto. We spent an hour or so getting scratched and dusty in the woods before giving up and taking the cable car ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Esquel February 19th 2008

After our first few days in Bariloche we picked up a hire car to drop back south to Esquel and El Bolson. Stopped for lunch in El Bolson and despite my fears it is not/no longer overrun with hippy types despite what the guidebooks might lead you to think. These days they are growing fruit or maybe some herbal tobacco. Seemed like a nice town. Esquel is about 300 km south of Bariloche and just about at the end of the decent scenery before our favourite road (see previous blogs) starts to cross the steppes. Esquel seems like a normal town with few tourist pretensions despite the number of newish cabanas around. We stayed with a woman who is 3rd generation Argentine/Welsh who still speaks the Welsh language fluently. She also serves up great breakfasts with ... read more

From the R40 bus stop we jumped in a cab to our hotel up the hill. Quck wash and brush up before a short walk to a good steak and red wine dinner in a restaurant down the road that looked like Bilbo Baggins´place in Lord of the Rings. Next day was a blur of blogging, laundry, photos to CD etc together with walking around town. After the time on the bus this seemed and is very touristy, at least in the centre with chocolate and t-shirt shops galore. But the setting is magnificent with the lake and the mountains. In the evening we went to a Hansel and Gretel styled restaurant for really good fish. Valentine´s Day we went out on the local bus to peninsula Llao Llao for a scenic walk in the woods ... read more

Ok it wasn't quite the road to nowhere but the bus ride from El Chalten to Perito Moreno is like an as yet unfilmed Werner Herzog film: hours and hours go by with nothing happening, the scenery along Ruta 40 is mesmerising in its sameness and its vast emptiness. The trip itself: Day 1 El Chalten to Perito Moreno town (not glacier) As the 40 odd (sic) passengers gathered for the bus in El Chalten there was a certain group mood of expectation and perhaps anxiety. We had all signed up for either the one day trip to Perito Moreno along R40 or some like us were doing the whole two days to Bariloche and were not totally sure what we were letting ourselves in for. Perhaps the rain and wind did not help. The road ... read more

El Chalten is a very new, very dusty and sometimes very windy place and you would not dream of coming here unless you wanted to see the hills. The bus from El Calafate stops at the Parque des Glaciares info centre to give you a pep talk and a map. As the ranger says "at El Calafate you get the bus to see the glaciers, here you walk". The map is good as it gives you the estimated time for different walks and the amount of uphill involved. Checked in at our hostel and booked a table for dinner at the next door restaurant - as they have a curry style dish we didn´t want to miss. The chicken curry and rice turned out to be great. As the weather looked good we decided to do ... read more

Up early again for the bus ride to El Calafate. Long wait at the Argentinian border whilst the dogs had a good sniff of the luggage. Probably distracted by the smells of some trekkers who looked like they had not been near hot water for a while... Arrived to find the town bathed in sunshine and very warm, our home for the next few nights is a glorified wooden tent, Susan thinks it is from the Snow White set. In lovely gardens with very friendly owners. From our initial stroll down the main street we realised that there are lots of souvenir shops and associated window shopping tourists to be walked around. Booked ourselves an "alternative" glacier trip for tomorrow and picked up info on how to get from here to further north. The alternative trip ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Torres del Paine February 7th 2008

Ok everybody who comes to Torres del Paine has a fantastic time. No arguing with that from us. After that nice short bus ride from Punta Arenas we had an afternoon in Puerto Natales doing those fun things such as finding a laundry, buying bus tickets, finding out about boat trips and horseriding, and realising that my newish argentinian camera battery charger needed a convertor to work in Chile. We now know where the small and useful (and less than useful) shops are too. There is even a place here that does proper thin crust pizzas! Had our evening in the pizza place chatting with some Germans and Americans who are intent on doing the whole TdP circuit starting in the morning. That morning came around too soon as we got the 7.30 bus in drizzle. ... read more
