We stayed at an idyllic estancia, Finca Santa Anita, about 60km south of Salta over Xmas. We travelled down from Cachi into Salta on Friday. Driving across the Cardones Parque (in the rain?), down the Cuesta Obispo road was probably easier for the driver than the passengers (including a hitchhiker of course). I wasn´t looking at the scenery or the drops, just the next bend. We rolled into Salta and it felt like coming home after a holiday. Got the car washed before handing it back to Budget, followed by a bit of tutting at some of the new paint scratches and a definite grimace at the crack in the windscreen...ah well. Saw in the local paper that there was an "Estampas de Argentina" show on tonight at one of the theatres so tracked down some ... read more

We left Tafi del Valle via a quick visit to the Parque de Menhires - and nothing more. Headed up into the clouds over the 3,000m Infiernillo pass. Couldn´t see any of the views. As we dropped down on the Cafayate side of the hills the clouds lifted and the landscape became more desert like with the lush forests being quickly replaced by cardones cacti. We were hoping to stay at Quilmes to see the ruins there (see previous blog entry) but the dispute about land rights etc seems to have got worse. The access road is now blocked off with felled trees and scrub. Moved on to Cafayate for a quick rethink. Decided to start on the road to Cachi and stopped at San Carlos where we stayed in a rather funky adobe hostal. Very ... read more

South America » Argentina » La Rioja » La Rioja December 20th 2007

We left Villa Union to head south and east to La Rioja city. Having had a full day of natural wonders the day before at Laguna Brava we passed by the Talampaya National Park - thinking that we might well be back in this part of the world, or nearby (Argentinian nearby is within a couple of hundred kilometres) in March. We arrived in La Rioja to find that it is not very touristy but the people are friendly are there a few things to see. The plaza is very pleasant with lots of trees for shade and some cafes for watching the world go by. There is also the oldest (?) church in Argentina and a good archaeology museum. We went for a walk to find the bus station only to find that it has ... read more

After a really good drive from Chilecito over the Cuesta Miranda, unmade Ruta 40 with hundreds of bends and some big drops, but fabulous views we arrived in the small town of Villa Union. Our reason for coming this far off the beaten track was to get to Laguna Brava park, about another 200km north west. It´s not in Lonely Planet for some reason. We managed to find a man who knew a man who has a 4WD and also does this trip regularly. So we met up with Gardi, his advice to us was to have a decent dinner, some breakfast and forget about eating much on the trip - as we would be going from about 1,000m above sea level to nearly 4,500 and down again. We did as we were told, even Susan, ... read more

We picked up our spanking clean Chevrolet Corsa and headed out of Salta down Ruta 68 for about 170K to Cafayate. Paved road all the way with spectacular quebrada/canyon scenery part of the way. Picked up a local hitching with two small boys - who fell asleep for the whole ride so the driving must have been OK. Spent a couple of nights in Cafayate. Walked up one of the small hills outside town - great view of the mountains, desert and vineyards. Also went up to one of the bodegas and Andrew went in search of some alleged painted caves at the Cueva del Suri. Involved wandering up and down the hillside in the company of a man possessed from Buenos Aires to eventually find one painted llama and a squiggle. Mmn. From Cafayate we ... read more

We got here, to Salta, after 11 hours on the overnight bus most of which time I had been asleep. Woken up once by Susan to try to stop me snoring too loudly. Had some breakfast in the sparkling bus station and cabbed it up the hill to our flat/house which will be home for the next three weeks. Overlooks the city but near enough to walk in. Susan did her homemaking - ie unpacked everything. First day was very domesticated, found a laundry, went to the supermarket etc. Great to actually stay in and cook on occasion. Next day we met up with Mercedes who will be our Spanish teacher in Salta. Two hours a day, five days a week plus homework. Scorching hot day. Actually enjoying the lessons (!) although it can be hard ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Villa General Belgrano November 14th 2007

The trip from Cordoba to Villa General Belgrano was great. 90 minutes of going up and down hills, round bends, past lakes etc. Very scenic. For a small town VGB is pretty spread out, really felt like we were a long way from city life. It can be quite a loing walk to get to where you are staying - in our case the Hotel Bremen. Walked there past the bierkellers, the shops selling Graf Spee memorabilia and kuchen and the apline sstyle houses. In case you don´t know the town was founded by German emigrants and in 1944 a couple of hundred of the survivors from the ship were relocated here. Found out that there is a festival in town this weekend. Tried some of the beer from the local brewery, Viejo Munich, excellent before ... read more

Arrived late afternoon in the third largest city in Argentina, about a million people, for the statistics buffs out there. Managed to negotiate the purchase of a local bus pass, bit like an Oyster card, and can recommend the tourist office at the bus terminal, give out a good map of the city and lots of advice - probably even more useful if you can really speak Spanish. A quick bus trip into the city centre following the bus line on the map meant we managed to find our hotel without any wrong turns. Bumped into some other English people trying to get a room - hope they found one as they were the only other gringos we saw in the city. After dropping off the bags we headed off to have a look round the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires November 5th 2007

Well here we are at the start of our five months in Argentina. Arrived in BA after an overnight flight from the UK, leaving behind the autumn and swapping it for warm (hot?) spring sunshine. Staying at a bed and breakfast in Palermo Hollywood for three nights. Spent the first day doing a bit of a local orientation and doing as the Portenos do - sitting outside a cafe and watching the world go by. Palermo seems very different to downtown. Here there is a mix of residential places with lots of cafes and restaurants and some very chichi shopping opportunities. Friday night was steak night as we hit the local parilla restaurant for some top red meat and wine - not quite the outright bargain it was a couple of years ago but then maybe ... read more

Up early to drive to Athens but wanted to get in a visit to Epidauros, principally to see the theatre. Arrived there bright and early and parked up next to a very organised bunch of Austrian bikers - complete with support vehicle (!). The theatre is amazing and photos don’t do it justice - just go! The rest of the site is undoubtedly important but is very ruined and mostly knee high to a not very tall person, I found it difficult to envisage the site as a real centre, but the stadium is worth a look. Headed off along the coast road up to join the motorway, more wonderful local driving was observed - I really need to find out where they get that kit that lets you see over the brow of hills ... read more
