South America » Chile » Magallanes » Punta Arenas February 4th 2008

As we left Ushuaia to get the bus back across Tierra del Fuego to Punta Arenas in Chile I had the time to think about how much time it had taken us to get to the end of the world. Turns out to be about 120 hours of time on buses, not counting side trips. Five overnight trips so far. No idea how many thousands of kilometres. Anyway we had a fairly long day from Ushuaia to Chile, very rainy and misty for the first few hours and then glorious sunshine for the bits with no interesting scenery. Only one odd stop in the middle of nowhere for the bus driver to put on his overalls and whack something under the bus with a large spanner. Punta Arenas was a nice city for a short stopover, ... read more

We arrived in Ushuaia to be met at the bus stop by people from the apart hotel we were staying at for the next five nights. A good and unexpected start. The hotel was a mere three blocks from the seafront - three uphill blocks, but they got easier with repetition. First evening we just went out for a drink and bumped into a Brazilian couple we had seen on our day trip to Peninsula Valdez. Back then we had hardly exchanged a few greetings , here we had a good chat. For those of you suffering the dark winter evenings at home you probably do not want to know that it was light until nearly midnight. The first full day here happened to be Susan's birthday. It also happened to have beautiful blue skies to ... read more

Just what you don´t need when about to catch a night bus which will take you 1200 km south: a taxi that dosn´t turn up to take you to the bus station. We thought ringing up 40 minutes before we needed to go would be fine, stress levels were rising rapidly when the taxi turned up with 10 minutes to get the 20 blocks to the bus station. Of course we made the trip in about six minutes and the bus was an hour late anyway....... The Andesmar bus coche cama was as comfy as expected and lots of sleep was had on what turned out to be the 19 hour trip to Rio Gallegos. That is sleep was had once the bingo had finished and I had asked the steward to turn off the music ... read more

The trip from Tandil to Bahia Blanca was uneventful. No bus breakdowns. For the first couple of hours there are actually some minor undulations and even the odd hill with huge fields of sunflowers. Listened to some Devo on the IPod, that was a bit different. Arrived at the rather ramshackle Bahia Blanca bus station (new much bigger station being bult next door) and immediately went to find some tickets for the next night to take us on to Puerto Madryn and Patagonia proper. Managed to get the front two seats upstairs for the 8.30pm departure. After finding our hotel and checking in we went for a bit of a wander. Bahia Blanca has three multi screen cinemas but not much of a choice of viewing. For some reason I had had a flick through the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Tandil January 16th 2008

We travelled down here on Sunday afternoon across nearly 400 km of dead flat but heavily cultivated pampas, the trip only interrupted by the bus breaking down about three and a half hours into the trip. Some problem with the brakes! Fortunately a local mechanic with a couple of pliers and a bit of wire got us sorted in about 30 minutes. On our first evening we met a lone German, Jurgen, who was travelling through Argentina with a camper van he had shipped from Hamburg. He seemed a bit surprised to find that not all Argentina´s roads are asphalted autobahns. He will have fun on some of the roads. Nice enough but with some funny ideas about the country and what is wrong/right with it. Tandil is actually on the edge of a range of ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 13th 2008

Arrived here in Buenos Aires for five nights in an apartment in Barrio Norte. I think the esate agents would call it Recolata border. Close to the Subte (two minutes) and a 20 minute or so walk from Recoleta cemetery and less than 30mins from real downtown. Nice to have our own space complete with living room and the opportunity to cook in. Which we actually did twice. First thing was to tramp the streets between the various Nikon Service Centers. None of which had a charger to fit, the guy in the second Center had the nerve to tell me that as my camera was a model from 2003 I should not expect to be able to get parts.....luckily or unluckily my Castellano was not yet good enough to tell him what I thought of ... read more

Arrived in San Antonio on Sunday afternoon. Found our hotel to be really lovely, right on the main square, attached to a silver workshop - we even had a sitting room and fridge complete with beer and water. Breakfast gets delivered to your room. Could get used to this. The town centre and around the square seemed very quiet but this is apparently normal for the summer, according to one of the locals. Lots of people in the park by the river enjoying the blistering weather. Only a couple of hours from Buenos Aires this is a nice place with some decent restaurants. Monday morning we had one of those frustrating times - we needed to send money to a hotel in Tandil for a deposit, but they don´t take credit cards. So we go the ... read more

We left Puerto Iguazu on the Expreso Singer overnight bus, leaving about 90 minutes late. Explanation was that the guys had been fixing the air conditioning - so probably worth the wait given the temperatures here. A fairly uneventful 14 hours later with decent amounts of sleep, particularly after the blankets were given out, we found ourselves at the roadside outside Concepcion del Uruguay. Not quite sure which direction to head in but a minute later the local gendarmes wandered across the road to ask us where we had come from, and where we were going. Having established that we did not want to walk into town, next thing we knew the policeman was on his radio getting a cab to take us the 7km into town. The taxi driver then gave us a running commentary ... read more

After an uneventful bus journey from Posadas to Puerto Iguazu we arrived in 37 degrees of steamy heat on New Year´s Eve. My turn to feel unwell, same symptoms as Susan the day before. Rather than whooping it up with the locals I took to my bed and we celebrated the New Year by watching Sideways on the TV, eating crackers and Susan having a go at the mini bar wine selection! 1 January 2008 dawned bright and sunny (no surprises) and all that sleep had done the usual restorative thing, plus scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast, joy. So we did what everybody does here and went to the Iguazu Falls. First day we went to the Argentine side. Very impressive set of waterfalls and by doing the various walks you can get quite close ... read more

South America » Argentina » Corrientes » Corrientes December 30th 2007

The overnight trip from Corrientes turned out to be even longer than planned. The rain started about an hour after we left Salta and was torrential at times, when you woke up in the night you could hear it hammering on the bus roof and the swishing of the wheels. Awoke in the morning to see a very green and lush landscape - with lots of water. Arrived in Corrientes a couple of hours late but by the time we had checked into our hotel and had showers we felt re-humanised. It doesn´t seem that many European tourists come this way but the city has got some really nice early 20th century buidings and a scenic river front. We did the usual which included walking to find the cinema (the usual horror movies are still on), ... read more
