Most of day 6 was spent in the Lake Myvatn region (which is where we woke up), as there is so much to explore in this area. We were a little unlucky with the weather although it could have been worse. It was fairly cold (probably 4 or 5 degrees), but on top of the cold we faced gale force winds (we'd estimate 60 to 80kms/hr... Although we have no formal education in this area). The winds would actually cause us to take a step back (or sideways) at times and we couldn't hold our cameras steady for the pictures if that's any indication. There was also a point where Chris was pretty sure he was going to be blown to his death over the side of a mountain (but more on that later). Suffice it ... read more

We have been taking our time leaving these towns but we hit the road quick in Egilsstadir as we had a long road trip in front of us. The road trip was once again scenic and other worldly; at times you could have convinced us we were driving on the surface of the moon. Our first stop was Dettifoss waterfalls. The road to Dettifoss was unpaved, barren and a little bumpy. We were wondering how they managed to locate their most powerful waterfall in a dry, barren, rock-like desert, but locate it they did! Dettifoss was spectacular. If you've ever seen the movie "Prometheus" these are the falls that were used in the opening scene and seeing them in real life was no less epic. After Dettifoss we made our way to Asbyrgi which is a ... read more

On Day 3 we woke up near Vik and headed for the black sand beaches (which that area is famous for). There are usually puffins in the area but they had already migrated for the winter. So we enjoyed the view, decided against the swim, and moved on. We began our trek East where we drove through "the black desert" which is almost alien in its appearance, smooth black rocks and sand covered in a soft green moss. We stopped on the side of the road and experienced perfect silence; no wind, no birds, no bugs, no trickling water or crashing waves...nothing but our own breathing. Beautiful and amazing, a peaceful natural experience we've never been exposed to anywhere else in our travels, definitely a highlight. We arrived at Skaftafell National Park where made a 2 ... read more

We experienced a lot of water today. Some glacial and falling over cliffs, some hot and bubbling up from the ground and even a bit from the sky. It was a good day. We started in Thingvellir National park which is a UNESCO world heritage site. This is the location of Iceland's first parliament (~900AD) and it drew the chiefs from each of the clans across the country. It has high cliffs created from the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. These geo-historical shifts have resulted in a beautiful landscape filled with striking rock walls, mossy fields, a waterfall and some crystal clear streams; it's not hard to see why the first settlers picked this place to meet. After Thingvellir we moved on to Geysir where we saw steam and water bubbling from ... read more

Hola Amigos! We just spent 1 week on the Island of Cozumel with family and what a week it was! Our resort was the Iberostar Cozumel. We were so happy with our choice as it truly is a wonderful place to stay. On the small side (300 rooms) the accommodations were little bungalows and 2 story huts so you really felt you had your own little home away from home. Each room had a hammock on the balcony. One of the highlights everyday was waiting to see what kind of towel creature our chambermaid would leave us. We had an impressive array: Swans, a mermaid, a dog, a dinosaur, a penguin, a little girl and a dragon! Our crew (we were 7 in total) was fortunate to occupy all the rooms on the 2nd floor of ... read more

New York City; if we can make it here we can make it anywhere… it really wasn’t that hard, Air Canada has direct flights from Ottawa daily. We arrived in New York City in the early afternoon and took a cab from LaGuardia to the Pod39 Hotel in mid-town Manhattan; a 25 minute drive that only cost us a measly $24… Lesson #1: Cabs are cheap in New York City, don’t be afraid to use them! We got to our hotel and discovered where the “Pod” name comes from; our room was clean and new, but it was also about 9 feet by 10 feet with a big ol bed taking up about 90% of that space… we did also have a 4 foot by 4 foot bathroom (roomie). We popped our bags under the bed ... read more

Andra and Chris 1 : Las Vegas 0 That's how it goes when you spend 4 days in Vegas and you don't spend a cent gambling. But don't worry....we didn't bring all our money home. We spent it on restaurants, shows, sightseeing and shopping! We arrived in Vegas mid-afternoon, dropped our bags at the hotel and headed out into the 106 degree (F) heat to explore the strip. While that seems hot, there is no humidity in the air and even when it does get a little too warm you're only a few steps away from the hotels which have their thermometers set to 'ice box'. We made our way to the Venetien for dinner and then eventually made it back to the Bellagio for our first fountain show experience. The fountain show turned out to ... read more

It's 11:30 AM on a Tuesday....have you had your first Lumumba of the day yet? Then you must not be in Jamaica, Mon! We spent 7 days at The Riu Ocho Rios with family and friends and had such a good time. We can highly recommend it if you think you will go. Almost a kilometre of palm tree lined beach (read: no fighting for beach chairs), great buffets, a Jerk Chicken hut, pools, gardens and fantastic staff. There was a coral reef 50 feet off shore (you could stand on a sandy bottom and look down at it) that we spent hours every day exploring with our snorkels. We only did one off-resort excursion. It started with a catamaran ride to a reef to do some snorkeling (snorkeling was actually better at our resort). Then ... read more

Europe January 15th 2011

Well a few of you have asked what life is like for 21 days on the high seas, so that's what this post is about. Lots of videos in this post as they best show life on the ship. The boat we were on is the Norwegian Jade, which is owned and operated by NCL (Norwegian Cruise Lines) -the 3rd largest cruise line in the world. They are recognized for inventing “Freestyle Cruising”... which means eat when you want, where you want, with whom you want... you also do what you want, when you want to do it... they do have some schedules but it's up to you how engaged you want to be with their organized activities. There was always something going on somewhere on the boat... we loved this model!!! Since NCL is an ... read more

So our cruise has come to an end and we've arrived in our final port of Barcelona... although our sea days are behind us (at least for now), the vacation is not yet over. We still have one final day in Barcelona before our flight home. If you've been following our blog, then you might remember our earlier visit here when we took the hop on hop off bus tour; that was a cold day in Barcelona, but we were much luckier on this visit. The temperature was about 18C and it was bright and sunny. Since we knew a little about the city we bought a full day metro (sub-way) pass and started meandering our way around. Our first stop was Parc Guell. The park is a public park (yay! Free), and it encompasses 15 ... read more
