Beijing After checking in at the hotel, which has an English speaking staff member very helpful who gave us two codes for wifi, we went to our room and Chilax, took a warm and long shower ( actually it wasn't warm and we had to turn on the sink water so that the hot water would turn on. After about 10 minutes it finally got hot so we could shower. Cleaned and rested we headed out to get some good and real food. We settled for the Hines restaurant of the hotel and ate our favorite honest dishes: dou jiao, jiao zi, some stir fried garlic chicken and what I thought was delicious fried pumpkin. Everything was good except for he pumpkin fries and there were a lot of them, and I felt bad about not ... read more

Jinshialing to Simatai Last day hiking We woke up at dawn and quietly packed up the tent and backpacks. We had to be very careful, quiet and do everything with a little light because there were some lights in the previous and next towers and we did not know if those lights were of tourists ( best luck) or guards ( bad luck and trouble). We ate a quick breakfast and while doing this we realized there was someone coming to our tower without making a sound we waited until the man left. At this point we were pretty sure the man was a guard and we did not want to risk being caught so we decided to leave the Great Wall. All in all we were satisfied and happy to have seen and been so ... read more

Gubei Kou to Jingahialong Day 2 We woke up around 7:00 AM and the Chinese couple was already up and getting ready to leave . We hurried up and got out of the tent to ask them for directions to Jinshialing. They were very helpful and said the path at the end of the last tower would lead to Jinsialing and they would put a black arrow along the way for us to follow. They left and we made breakfast and packed up and around 9:30 we were ready for our hike. We got to the starting point of the trail fairy quickly. It was a narrowed, dirt, bumpy trail along the side of the mountain. We walked on it for about an hour until we reached a flat corn field. There we started to realize ... read more

Gubei Kou to Jinshialing. Day 1 We woke up to a blue sky and warm bright sun. This meant nice weather for a long day hiking. While Kyle set up the stove and got breakfast stated, I packed the tent and backpacks. While doing this a family with a little boy and a grandma hike up and an old man, who seemed to be a farmer and also a Great Wall staff guard came up to our camp. The. Family was trying to go up the wall on the same path we had gone on the hike the previous day, but today there was a handmade written sign in Chinese blocking the path (we did not know what is said but assumed it was prohibiting people from going that way up to the Great Wall a ... read more

Gubei Kou day hike Tuesday arrived with a thunderstorm, wind and cold weather. We woke up around 6 AM due to the wind blowing cold and the rain drops on our tent's roof. We waited a bit util the rain slowed down a bit and when not did we quickly grabbed the tent and put it down under the tower. We were thankful this tower had shelter. We grabbed our backpacks and cooking utensils as well and put them also under the tower. We started to cook a warm oatmeal breakfast and black tea to warm up a bit and in the mean time read and chilled while the rain passed. After breakfast we were very cold and so we took a mid morning nap ( in the tent) until about 10 AM. We woke up ... read more

Jian Kou to Gubeu Kou We woke up early to the sound of the rain and wind bumping into our tent. It was a very foggy and coolish day, we could barely see above 10 meters from us. We waited until the rain passed for us to eat breakfast ( raisin cinnamon oats) and drink tea. We finished breakfast and packed our tent and backpacks and were ready to head forward to Mutinyu. We started our day hike and it was tricky but manageable. We passed some ruins of the wall and had to climbed through broken bricks to get over a few towers. Some young Chinese men passed is along the way. In site of being skinny and very unprepared they seem to know the path and climbed at a fast pace. Me on the ... read more

Sleeper train to Beijing, bus and taxi to Joan Kou and hike up to Jian Kou the wild wall section Our October holiday started on Saturday September 27. We took a qingguai ride from Kaifaqu to Houyan station ( near Dalian) and then a 3-wheeled crappy taxi to the DLC new train station were supposedly our train to Beijing would leave from. When we entered the station, which looked very clean and modern, the security guard told us we needed to go to the DLC railway station, ahhhh panic attack we only had about 1 hour to get there! After leaving behind a couple of taxis who were harassing us and wanting yibai (100rmb) for a short ride we finally got a taxi for 40 rmb, but he took his time to try and get more ... read more

Sunday July 14 Relax day breakfast at the Wooden Shoe and shopping We woke up around 11 o clock and got dressed ready for a last day shopping, but first we would eat brunch at Kyle´s favorite spot in Vancouver. A small and cozy family Deutsch restaurant. We drove there because we needed to buy some heavy things and needed a big trunk to put them in. We got to the restaurant and to my surprised it was very small and cozy. It is called The Wooden Shoe and is all decorated with Deutsch pictures, flags, and lots of Deutsch wooden shoes along with photos of happy customers. Kyle told me he has been going to that place since he was a fetus in his mom´s belly and longer than any of the young waitresses and ... read more

Friday July 12 Bike ride back to ferry from Victoria to Vancouver We woke up at 5 o ´clock in the morning packed our bags and left for the ferry. The first part of the bike ride was downhill so it was easy. The rest was the same as the ride to Victoria, however I was tired and sleepy and well lets face it bike seats are not truly comfortable- I had set a goal to keep up my pace and improved so I was going a bit faster and with more strength. We reached the ferry at 7 15 (2 hours ride, 1 hour less than the way to Victoria. We parked our bikes and went in the ferry to have breakfast. The ferry ride was quiet and we slept most of the way. When ... read more
