Guatemala Glad you are getting the most of our your trip. Sorry to hear about your ear but happy you had it taken care of quickly. The Mayan Ruins are always a joy to visit.
A proper adventure! Love those colorful, little churches, and I adore tacky decorations. In Spain and here in South America, I've seen lots of neon Jesuses and whole plastic soccer teams joining Mary and Joseph in the creche--wild imaginations! The hot springs and the natural pools both look fantastic, but so sorry about your ear infection. How lucky that you knew to get it treated because I would be completely clueless about that. It's tricky traveling as we age--I've always enjoyed how you and Emma entered marathons as you travel. Now, your knee and my lungs give us problems when we just want to hike--bummer. But it sounds as if you still had many fine adventures. What could your spectacular thing be that we have to wait for your next blog?
Soccer team in a Christmas decoration I would have loved to see a soccer team included in a Christmas decoration. That would have looked so funny. Thanks for the comment. /Ake
Caving in Guatemala If you ticked off the places you've been caving in the world...how many would you have swum, waded, walked, climbed a waterfall and got down and dirty? Guatemala...bet you can't think of any others!
On caves I like a lot of things and, as you had figured out, caves is one of them. In a way it would be easier if I had just one interest, such as golf or hiking or diving, because it would be so much easier to plan a trip then. Now there are so many things I want to see and do so I have to manage to squeeze all of it in somehow.
Semuc Champey We are heading to Guatemala next month and will be visiting a few of the places you've written about here. I enjoyed looking at your photos and can't wait to see these places for myself. Hope your eardrum has healed (it sounded painful!) and the infection has cleared.
Good idea! After last year, Dax and I have also decided not to be at home for Christmas... at least while Ella is still small... everything is so expensive and we hate the fact that you HAVE to buy presents just because it's Christmas... so, like you, we will either be going to somewhere nice and warm, or just staying at home in UK (since our families are either in Spain or Germany, it's easier to avoid the madness...) Your photos really want to make me book a ticket straight away! Looking forward to the next blog.
Would love to visit there! I've always wanted to go to Belize, I keep hearing such great things about it, specifically the diving and great reefs available. Thanks for sharing in detail what you learned on your trip :)
Brilliant decisions! I've always enjoyed being abroad and missing the Christmas madness too. And Central America is such a fantastic destination, and your underwater photos from Caye Caulker are gorgeous! I was there about 35 years ago when there were no agencies, golf carts or restaurants. Everyone found a room in or behind people's houses and two ladies cooked cheap lobster dinners on their patios. But then again, you can tell people you saw it back in '16 when it was primitive compared to its future development. Now, is always the perfect time to go. Loved your adventures in the cave and at Carocol too.
Thanks for telling us about what it was back then Thanks for telling us about what CC was back 35 years ago. It is always entertaining to hear such stories and try to imagine what it was like then. Stories like that is what keep me going back on the road again and again. /Ake
Beautiful! It's beautiful (although cold) up in the northern parts. I haven't been there for many years and I unfortunately didn't get to see any auroras. :)
Seems you enjoyed Romania more than I did. Although, seeing how I was subjected to an attempted scam by a fake security guard and chased by a pack of rabid dogs I guess most visits would be more pleasant. :D Was nice reading about your drive through Romania, one day I'll go back there and give it a second chance. :)
If you are up to it we can recommend that Scams and mad dogs can really spoil a trip. We didn't have any such encounters in Romania so I believe you had some bad luck. We had such a good time in Romania that we can really recommend you to give it a second chance. /Ake
We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden.
We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them.
Some of the things from our travel bucket list we have ticked off since we started this blog in 2006 are
