An Intimate Experience
What a lovely, intimate experience. It seems you were able to go beyond what the usual tourist does and sees, very special. I love the feeding of the onigiri to the fish, and the Swedish bear hugs :D

A Real Local Experience
What a wonderful local Japanese experience this must have been, spending time with some lovely people and away from the tourist places, hustle and bustle. It must have been another wonderful day :)

Geisha
Not to worry about not being able to show pictures, your description was beautifully detailed and helped me envisage what it must have been like. What a wonderful and memorable experience for you my friend :D

Cuddling with Vivian

Vivian
The name Vivian suits her so much! Is she a Whippet or an Italian Greyhound?

It does. I'm not sure about the race to be honest. ^^'

Ascending to heavenly peaks
You sound as if you are in Heaven already Per-Olof...or maybe you are dreaming of ascending heavenly peaks. It is wonderful you can visit these places and share the legends that surround them. An unusual pic of Mt Fuji so I'll post it in Magnificent Mountains thread in the Photography Forum.

I certainly was, and I sure look back to returning soon and ascending even closer to heaven. :)

Beautiful people
Thanks for writing about the momiji manju! My Mum brought a few back when she returned from working in Japan... I loved them but never knew how to look for it again (I found ones in other shapes, but they didn't taste the same). I love this culture of gift giving. It was something we were taught to do as kids, but we seem to have lost the art of it along the way. You've inspired me to start doing it again :)

Beautiful people
I'm happy that this made you reconnect both with momiji manju and the art of gift giving. They really are beautiful people and I still get messages from them through Junko from time to time. =)

The subtle differences in Japanese culture
I love the way you immersed yourself in the culture and food - it makes me feel like we are part of your journey! But then... 'Vivian managed to pee in their couch' :D I laughed, but also immediately felt that mortified feeling when your dog does something awful :/ I need to follow your example and take Australian snacks/sweets to share with locals (but knowing me, they'd probably be eaten well before we even meet a local!) :)

The subtle differences in Japanese culture
Thank you! Glad you liked it! Aye, I must admit that it was tempting to eat it along the way. :p

Very Interesting
A very interesting read, thank you. I am currently reading up on Japanese history, and your accounts on the Tokugawa period and the 47 Ronin were particularly interesting for me. You certainly know your Japanese history! :)

Toshiro Mifune

Toshiro Mifune's grave
Oh, that is so cool! Toshiro Mifune's grave would be worth visiting. Some people think it is weird and distasteful to visit famous people's graves. I disagree with them and happily visit the graves of people I admire for some reason. I have for instance seen the graves of Keith Moon, Marc Bolan, Bon Scott, Marilyn Monroe, Harry Houdini, Gloria Swanson and Frank Zappa. I have also been known to visit graves of people I dislike as well if they were important enough (Nicolae Ceaușescu). /Åke
