DAY 92 SAILING DAY 20 Finally Skipper Dave calls out to us that are still below deck to “get up, we are coming into Athens”. Now we are moving. It is still windy, but warm. We enter the marina and it is full of boats as the weather has been rough. We find a place to moor, freshen up, dress and get off that yacht. We have breakfast at a cafe along the beach and hop on a tram into the center of Athens. Bill comes us us. That being Angie, Francine and Yvonne. Bill was here for nine days prior to sailing so he knows the city well. We get off the tram and walk to the parliament building where there is a small crowding gathering for inspection of the guards. It is not as ... read more

DAY 89 SAILING DAY 17 Dave has checked the weather report and there should be some wind today. We have a quick breakfast and head out of port and north asap. Fantastic, up go the sails. Loretta takes the helm. Francine, Angie and Yvonne head up to the bow to relax in the shade of the sails (tough isn't it). We tack and now the sun is shining on us so we head to the stern (back). Eventually it is too hot and we head below decks to read. Well that is what Francine said. She is never going to finish her book whilst on this yacht. Zzzzzzzzz We arrive in Kythnos at about 2pm. This is a small quite island, more of a weekend destination for mainlanders. The island doesn't attract too many foreign visitors. ... read more

DAY 84 SAILING DAY 12 Bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning. Francine and Yvonne head off to the super market for some fresh produce. First, stopping to have a coffee with Bill. The super market is at the back of the town and they got lost on the way. A lovely Greek lady helps them with directions. Finally they make it back to the boat. All ready to set sail and off we go on our way to Syros, about a 5 hour trip. There is a nice wind and today we get to sail for a few hours. This morning Angie is at the helm and gets a lesson in sailing with the sails. So the routine commences. Sailing, siesta and eating. We arrive in Syros at about 4pm. This town looks very much ... read more

DAY 80 SAILING DAY 8 We motor out of the harbour and wave goodbye to Santorini. Francine takes the wheel. The is not much wind and this is a shipping and cruise liner channel anyway. We travel back through the Caldera and moor the boat on a buoy below the town of Oia, under the cliffs where we had lunch the previous day. The water is 55m deep and blue. It calls our names and we all dive right in. We now have our noodles and float around. The water is cool, yet the warmest we have had so far and so refreshing. Jen is cooking lunch and we sit on deck eating stir fry veggies and rice. Fresh bread and delicious fresh butter. We tidy up and motor off towards the island of Ios. Still ... read more

DAY 78 SAILING DAY 6 Francine gets up at about 3am and checks that the boat has not moved. At 5am the motor starts up. Angela (G) has woken the captain as the boat has moved very close to the small beach. We assume positions and set off for the day. After about an hour Francine goes back to bed as she hardly slept during the night, whilst worrying about the boat hitting the rocks. We are on our way to Santorini. There isn't much wind to begin with but later in the morning we are able to use the sails without the motor. Santorini is one of several ancient volcanoes lying on the southern Aegean volcanic arc. The circular island volcano erupted in about 1450BC causing the centre to sink, leaving a caldera with high ... read more

DAY 76 SAILING DAY 4 The weather outside the bay has calmed this morning. After a crazy night we are tired before we begin. So we are on our way to Amorgos without eating breakfast. This is a small rugged island that has been inhabited since 3300BC. The entrance to the port fills us with total awe and inspiration as this is the stereotypical Grecian village, whitewashed buildings built up onto the mountains with bright blue window shutters. We are going to rent a car and travel around the island. There are six of us going so we are told we will have to rent two cars. But when we go to the Thomas Car Rental we are able to persuade him to allow us to take the mini van as we promise to have it ... read more

THE RED, THE DEAD, NOW THE MED DAY 73 We wake up on the boat in our little cabin and can't wait to get up and start our sailing adventure. Breakfast is hand squeeze OJ, bread, butter, jam, coffee, juice, cheese. Breakfast lingers on and Angie especially getting impatient. Finally the boat is underway however the winds are not favorable. So we have to motor out till we can catch the wind. The captain allows each of us to steer the boat. We find that steering with the sails up is a tricky business and needs constant and full attention to catching the wind. We are enjoying our ride even though the boat is leaning to one side while the sails are up. So most of us are on the starboard side to compensate. Some of ... read more

DAY 71 'KOS WE'RE GOING SAILING We take the BLUE STAR FERRY, a huge vessel on a three hour journey from Rhodes to Kos. We arrive and take a taxi to out lodging for the night. The apartment is 13 km out of Kos town and it sits across the road from the beach and has a really nice swimming pool. However there is no manager on the premises and we have no idea what to do and what room is ours. The people staying there said that they were given a room number and the key was left in the door for their arrival. There two doors with keys in them so we took one room but they had only two beds and we needed three beds. Being bold women we took a mattress from ... read more

DAY 62 - 66 We arrive here from Pamukkale at around 9:30 PM and have to wait 30min. for the shuttle bus to take us to the V-Go Hostel. We did not make reservaations and the only thing available is a dorm room with 3 other women. A young Canadian man offered us his room which was a double bed. We took it since is was so late and figured that Angie was too tired to toss and turn like she usually does. We were assured that they would have a twin single the next day. But after a long day of hiking and swimming we come back to find we are in the same room. The hostel is nice with a swimming pool that we never use and a patio with bar that we ... read more
