Toril with the tide out
PJ in the middle of the Toril - tide out - are you sure this is a tourist attraction as no-one else here!!! Well today started off well. Went into the bathroom and started brushing my teeth, with yes you guessed it Savlon. I screamed from the bathroom as soon as I realised I had done it (Savlon does not taste like colgate, I can tell you!). Anyway after washing my mouth out a million times I decided to use toothpaste - good call or what.
Then we get a train to the ferry terminal to go over to Miyajima. Miyajima is a Unesco World Heritage Site. It has a toril (which is a shrine which floats on the waves when the high tide is in - told you I am getting so educated it is unbelievable!) and is one of the most photographed sites in Japan.
Anyway on the ferry as we can see the toril from the boat I decide to take a couple of photos. No issue here or so I thought, until the camera packed up. Well camera's do pack up when there is no battery left - and here I am with 2 photos and that is it. I am not a happy chappy by this time. Then Mike informs me he also brought my iPhone, so
all is not lost I think.
The tide was out when we got to the toril so I decided to paddle out and stand in the middle of shrine - not sure why I was the only one doing this, as it is a tourist hotspot. I discovered it was probably due to all the sea weed and creepy crawlies in the water.
Mike took several photos of me in the water going to and standing in the middle of the toril (please note he was on dry ground at this point) I got out pretty damn smart, ha ha
After this we decided to go up to the top of the Mount Mison with the help of a gondola (which to you and me is a cable car).
Anyone who knows me knows that heights and me do not quite mix so in the gondola I made Mike not move an inch as I was sure I was going to die (dramatic or what - seeing as it was fully closed in).
I kept on thinking about the Bond movie "Moonraker" where Roger Moore had a fight with Jaws in the cable car and
Gondola
Dun dedlun da, dun dun dun dun, dedlun da - James Bond theme if you did not get it! the cable car kept swinging around (I told you I was not dramatic).
On the climb up Mount Mison after leaving the cable car we found the temple where Kobo Daish spent 100 days and lit a fire that they have kept going since since 806. They used this fire to light the flame in Peace Memorial Park I told you about yesterday.
Mike has told me to mention that he took his hat today to ward off the sun - see he does listen to someone else occasionally (let see if he remembers tomorrow!).
We are back off to a great little place we found on the first night to eat tonight - will try to get some pictures for you - they are a great little couple running the place - I think they have adopted us.
