In Quang Ngai, I've survived the last 4 days of rain and rather cool weather to enjoy a full day of sun...hope it lasts through the night. This afternoon, I walked to the university to see lots of freshly washed clothes hanging out to dry...even washed some of my own clothes today and hung them out. Yesterday, I was introduced to Mr. Phuoc Pham Dang, Rector and Vice Rector, Mr. Nghi Pham; Mr. Ca Tran Hau, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Mr. Nhi Nguyen Tu, the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages; Mr. Du Nguyen Dinh, Head of International Cooperation and Mr. Hung Pham Thanh, Deputy Head of Training Dept and Mr. Hai Nguyen Thanh, the Head of Training Department at a formal welcoming meeting. I have had the good fortune ... read more

Quang Ngai City is bustling with workers, small shops, motorbikes, bicycles, food vendors that line the streets, and markets. There are lots of bicycle and what we used to call Mopeds when I was in Senegal and in France. Most people use these motorbikes for transportation -- sometimes 3 people ride together -- either with or without a helmet. Stateside I thought, No, I wouldn't dare get a motorbike when I'm there. Now that I am thinking logistically, I'm wondering why not? The traffic here in Quang Ngai is not nearly as bad as in Hanoi where it could take 10 minutes to cross a street if you don't know what you're doing. If I get a bicycle (which was my original plan), I'll still be in the middle of the traffic. I'll probably wind up ... read more

This is Part 3 of my 7-day trip to the Central Vietnam (from 3 Aug to 9 Aug 2012). When I said “I would like to go to small island”, the local people on Lý Sơn island understood it was “An Binh island” as they often say so. Lý Sơn island district consits of two islands which are Lý Sơn island and An Bình island. While Lý Sơn island has two communes with about 21,000 people, there is only one commune on An Bình island and it has the same name An Bình. It is a small island with over 100 households, ie about 500 people. I heard that the landscape on this island is very beautiful, the beaches are clean and the locals use solar energy to supply power for themselves. One of my uncles ... read more

This is Part 2 of my 7-day trip to the Central Vietnam (from 3 Aug to 9 Aug 2012). When I asked my relatives to go with me to Lý Sơn island, some people said they were busy, while another one said she was scared of sea sickness, so I had to go alone as always. My parents stayed in Quảng Ngãi city and I would see them again at Đà Nẵng airport and then we would fly back home together. I spent the first two days of my trip with my relatives, and during the remaining 5 days I was alone and busy moving around all the time. There are 13 districts in Quảng Ngãi province. Lý Sơn island district is one of them and it consists of two islands which are Lý Sơn island ... read more

This is Part 1 of my 7-day trip to the Central Vietnam (from 3 Aug to 9 Aug 2012). On this trip I traveled with my parents, sister and nephew to Quảng Ngãi province and visited the village where my father was born. It has been a long time since my last visit, so things have changed. My father was born in a wealthy family in the Central Vietnam and many poor people in the village worked on my grandfather’s land. However, my grandfather was a good man and he followed the communist party. In 1954, when my father was 19 years old, he traveled on a Polish ship to the North for training, hoping he would go back home as a cadre two years later. The Vietnam war happened and it lasted 21 years (from ... read more
