Well the morning started out great, we hired a motorbike I drove and Jayde on the back.... Only a couple of near death experiences... haha But we do think it is the best way to see the sights and get amongst it all! I think I lengthened my concentration span, had to keep on my toes.... We went to see the Citadel, a lake, markets and the back streets of Hue (Oi you). Was all very interesting and eye opening once again. took the bike back at 1pm and then got on our bus to Danang arriving at 5pm.... When we got off the bus we decided we would stay at China Beach but that decision soon changed when we got there and all it is, is one really long beach and a couple of resorts ... read more

Day 226, 12th January Qinzhou - Jiangping - VIETNAM - Mong Cai - Tra Co My guts weren’t much better this morning, but after a quick email check, we were up and on the road for 10am. The idea was to get as close to the Vietnamese border as possible somewhere along the coastal road, and then camp. As we sped along the empty roads though, the general consensus was to reach the border at Dongxing and cross it today. At about 4.30pm, we reached the town and located the narrow muddy river that is the actual border. It looked fairly un-controlled and would be easy to walk across, but we had the right documents and didn’t. We found the border bridge which was for foot-passengers only. We were hassled to buy some sort of ticket ... read more

Woke up after a restless night for Michelle (leaks through the ceiling onto her side of the bed and nightmares), thankfully I slept like a baby. We were back on the bike early and headed up the road to Marble Mountain - five huge limestone outcrops of rock that rose sharply from the surrounding plain and entitled after the five Vietnamese elements, earth, wood, steel, fire and water- dunno what happened to air (only remembered this from seeing Mont's new tat). The climb was steep and hot to say the least but rewards were soon found - beating off the insistent tour guides we escorted ourselves to a huge white marble buddha, followed by some pretty impressive caves where there were more shrines carved out of the mountain's marble and a smaller pagoda with a white ... read more

WOW, what an intoduction to Vietnam....a car ride into Ho Chi MInh City with a driver I did not know, driving on the wrong side of the road, dodging motor cycle, pushies and other cars all the while his hand was on the horn. Such a clacophony of sounds. Road rules don't seem to be adhered to although I'm sure they do exist on paper somewhere. Motor bikes and cycles go in whatever direction they like and if the shortest way from A to B is via the footpath then the footpath it is. That's for those in/on vehicles. Now for pedestrians. Pedestrian crossings are painted on the road but only seem to be used by the tourists but that mean any of the traffic stops for you. As a pedestrian...just step off the curb, look ... read more

So, jetzt bin ich allein unterwegs. On the road. ... read more

Greetings, realise this blog has dried up a slight bit lately, but i will get things back on track. here is a run down of events since we last spoke. left phnomh penh around a week ago now i suppose, easy journey to saigon, vietnam. had a great time in saigon which included such things as visiting war museums, exploring war tunnels, mad nights out, meeting loads of class people, getting free drinls and free food all night as vips at a bars 3rd birthday party, a great time was had by all involved. then we got a night train up to da nang (16 hours), and spent a couple of days in a small town called hoi an, which was v. nice, but quite boring because there was only about 10 people there. the ... read more

Pre-Op (Part I) I suppose the Da Nang Hospital is not the worst in the world, but I sure the hell would not want to be treated there. Yet I guess like anything else, it’s all relative. Tam got his hospital bed and I thought, what a piece of crap, but he happily jumped on it and said WOW, this is a GREAT bed! Having a room in Da Nang Hospital means a room shared with 5-10 other patients in varying conditions from brain trauma, cancer, to broken limbs. There is one shared bathroom consisting of a squat toilet, small sink, bucket and spicket. The only 2 things supplied for your stay is one sheet and a pair of prison-like pajamas (how appropriate). And it was no joke when they said you need to bring everything ... read more

Just checking in to say we're having a great time on the cruise. Yesterday we sailed all day and it was wonderful. Hung out by the pool, in the shade of course. Last night was formal night on the ship. They have Cakebread Chardonnay! Had a great lobster for dinner. Today we are going to Marble Mountain and China Beach. It's HOT HOT HOT and very HUMID. Hopefully I won't faint but we are taking bets if anyone is interested :) ... read more

Arrived in Da Nang this morning. Pretty amazing to see how they dock such a huge ship. Took a tour to Marble Mountain (aka Tourist trap), then went on to China Beach and on to the city center. The only story I will share are the motor bikes....thousands of scooters with up to four people riding. The dad drives, the mom sits behind dad with one child wedged in between them, and the older kid stands on the floor board behind the handle bars. There are proper roads and most people follow the traffic rules but not all the time. There were plenty of scooters on the wrong side of the road. Plus to make it even hairier there are no stop signs or traffic lights. Look out when you get to an intersection and good ... read more

so we're driving along the road from hoi an to hue. my uncle in the front seat, mom, aunt huong and me jammed in the back seat of a tiny car...but hey! who's complaining. i'm not on the open tour bus right? so i ask mom if she can ask the driver if we can stop in danang on the way to hue. the driver says no...it's 2 km off the road. i ask mom to re-translate and "ask politely again" that i am strongly suggesting or actually requesting or actually saying that we must stop in danang on the way to hue. my goodness....did he not understand that i'm in vietnam and i MUST go to china beach, danang where the wave in apocolypse now was apparently located + a short clip from the recent ... read more
