My time in Hanoi was spread out over four days in the span of a few weeks. In between Ninh Binh, Cat Ba Island, and Sapa I had come and gone from the capitol several times. As I mentioned earlier I based myself in The Hoan Kiem Lake District which borders the Old Quarter of the city. The Old quarter is a maze like neighborhood that I would get lost for hours in wandering the streets and looking at all of the strange and foreign people around me. Any manner of consumable is on offer here and you could never get bored in the streets. I did make a visit to Hoa Lo Prison aka "The Hanoi Hilton" where American POWs were kept after being shot down whilst bombing Hanoi during the war. The museum was ... read more

Arriving from Haiphong into Ninh Binh after a two hour minibus ride I found a nice little hotel for the nicer price of $100,000VND and set out to wander this pleasant little city. It was the official "Liberation Day" here in Vietnam and many families were outside in the parks or on their patios eating and drinking and enjoying their time off. It was nice to see a little bit of daily life going by in front of me as I strolled. I made it to the market where all manner of produce, meats, and fish were on offer as well. Markets are always an interesting place to walk around. It seems that thier is always something someone is willing to buy and eat and I usually have no idea what it is. My reason for ... read more

Taking a step back to our last stop, Hanoi the capital of Vietnam. Wow did we love this place again! It creeps up on you, she's a charismatic lady, seems hectic and to busy on first arrival. Takes a moment to understand that you have to trust her people not to run you over in every imaginable vehicle as you cross the street to get to the other side. Ahhh, but once you work that one out, then you can begin to enjoy what Hanoi has to offer. I believe it's her test before she welcomes you in. It was festival time, as the country celebrated a 3 day labour holiday. We have managed to pick up every public holiday and celebration in every city along the way, it's great to see but transport and some ... read more

Our fourth time in Hanoi and still the chaos and noise slightly overwhelmed me when we arrived in the old quarter, tired from an evening flight from Bangkok where we had spent three days with our son, his wife and our two gorgeous little grandsons. It was fun to see Asia through the boys' eyes and we enjoyed visiting a snake farm, the zoo, tuktuk races around the streets and river boat rides on the Chao Phraya River. As well as lots of fun and laughter in the hotel swimming pool... They all went on to a more exciting place for little boys - Legoland in Malaysia and we headed off to renew our acquaintance with Hanoi. After settling into our favourite hotel on Ma May Street (the Hanoi Guest House) we ventured out looking for ... read more

Our last Vietnam adventure was a four day, two night trip on a teakwood boat to Bai Tu Long Bay with Indochina Junk. Tom, always the master planner, had decided long ago that we’d be happier without a crowd of tourists, so he reserved a one-stateroom boat. Bai Tu Long Bay is a less crowded area off HaLong Bay, which has become more and more crowded with tourists over the past 9 years. Thanks to Tom’s planning, we sailed in luxury on the Princess Junk, with a crew of four (captain, mechanic, chef and guide) taking care –very good care – of us. The weather was foggy and cool, so we spent a good deal of time inside the small dining room cabin, rather than on one of the two decks. Trips out into the bays ... read more

In search of a theme for my photography I decided to take photos of washing. Not someone's dirty washing you understand, but clean and out in the sun to dry. I had once tried this before when I took my daughters to South America over 13 years ago. I had taken some classics but fairly early on our three-month trip I had left my camera in a bus. It had been so hot and I had undone my bag to get out a tissue to wipe my perspiring brow. The heat must have addled my brain. When we were at the waterfall cooling off I realised I could not find the camera in my backpack. It was never seen again and neither were the washing photos. Most of the clothes belong to small children. Worldwide they ... read more

We, as travellers, often look for the scenic, the beauty spots, the ancient monuments but as we leave the port of Haiphong on a road far worse than any they could hope for I wonder if we ever 'see' the real country warts and all. Haiphong is the country's third largest city, a jumble of container terminals, refineries and factories. Having suffered drastically in the war it is now in the process of being connected by high speed motorway to Hanoi and beyond. Hence the potholes or rather the crevices in the road into which small cars disappear. The road is yet to be surfaced, concrete towers loom out of the dusk as precursors to multiple flyovers which disappear into the distance - a new spaghetti junction in the making. Through the rain showered windows of ... read more

The last few days have been hectic, with little or no WIFI. We had a few days in Vientiane ( capital of Laos), not much to say about it really, other than we said goodbye to 7 of our recent travelling companions. We had a 45 minute flight to Hanoi, take off, served a sandwich and drink, clear up and land. The immigration officials looked foreboding in their ornate uniforms, but straight through no problems. After we met the new members of the group, our guide, Charlie (well it had to be didn't it? If you don't get that then watch Good Morning Vietnam or Appocolypse Now), took us to a local restaurant where we got an entertaining entre into Vietnamese food. The walk back was even more interesting, the streets were packed with people, some ... read more
