After a lively night, getting in around 11.30 fuelled by mintless mojitos (they had run out) and great travelling chat with a Dutch couple who followed us to the Hmong Sisters Bar and some Americans, we felt a bit jaded this morning and depressed at having to check out at 11am and wander around homeless until our bus pickup at 5. the hotel is too cold to wait in. There is actual fog in reception and some of the corridors, where it rolls in through the open doors. One girl at breakfast today refused to eat it in the dining area it was so cold, she took it up to her room. We stuck it out and ate what we could. We found out last night that there is a new cable car to the top ... read more

We organised our stuff. Hand luggage sized for the boat, summery clothes to leave while we go to Sa Pa in one big bag and the other bag with warm clothes (very small pile of these, sadly) to take on the train with us. Fingers crossed for the big bag which would no doubt be left on the landing in the hotel for 3 days. Met my lovely niece Laura and her husband Stuart for dinner. They'd been doing our same trip but the other way round, so had come from Laos and just got back from Halong Bay. They had lots of useful info, and after dinner we splashed through the night market, looking for coats for them and elephant trousers at £2.20 a pair for us. Shame they didn't fit. Laura and Stuart were ... read more

Not sure I like it here too much, but the main big difference is the temperature. Although we knew it was going to be colder, 17 degrees in theory doesn't feel like it. The local people have hats, coats and gloves and we are trying to wear as many layers as possible. And negotiating through the streets of the old town with a combination of maps from the Lonely Planet, the hotel and on my iPad is really difficult. Maybe on a bright, sunny day it would look entirely different. Laundry handed into the hotel, $1 a kilo, back at 5pm tonight. Breakfast was good - I had pho, which was fetched from down the alleyway somewhere. Goodness knows who made it. Off we went in the drizzle to find the Hanoi Hilton prison museum. No ... read more

Up early, checked prices on booking.com for the Bali Boutique Hotel, as we decided to stay here again when we come back. It's so nice and quiet at the back, the room is huge and the breakfast buffet is great. I took a snapshot of the prices and went to reception to negotiate a discount, as they won't have to pay a fee if I book direct, so win win all round. 6 nights without having to move - bliss! So we return on 17 Feb. I paid a $40 deposit and was assured we wouldn't show up to be told there was no room! Picked up a Vinasun cab on the street and it was rush hour, but despite a few near squeaks we didn't hit anything. The driver asked for 'goodbye' money on top ... read more

Arrived in hanoi at 6am- unfortunately we were joined by 2 Chinese guys in our cabin on the train-one of them was a snorer but the train drowned him out after a while!our hotel-hanoi blue inn let us have breakfast and our room was ready by 10am! We went and saw Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum. It was weird and very strict to get into-lots of guards around his body! We then went back to the hotel to rest and shower!it was so wet we were really happy to be in a warm room! In the afternoon we visited hoa lo prison museum which was nicknamed the hanoi Hilton by the American POWs! Didn't really enjoy it-not sure if it was the rain or if it was just rubbish! Had one of the best dinners of our ... read more

I arrived in Hanoi from Ha Long Bay in the late afternoon. Sadly, I realized that my days are numbered in Hanoi. I am leaving tomorrow afternoon to Da Nang. I lost about half a day when I had to delay my paragliding due to the bad weather. Well, that is the problem of back-to-back tours. So far, I have been lucky, but a single delay anywhere can result in a domino effect. Anyway, it is what it is. I have only tomorrow morning to see Hanoi. And I have to make the best out of it. I know today will be a busy evening for me in Hanoi. I have to meet so many people to say good bye. First, I have to see Alice before HTS office closes. I promised that we will have ... read more

My flight from Hong Kong arrived in Hanoi on time. It was a sunny afternoon. After the immigration formalities, I came out with my luggage. There he was, Steve from HTS to pick me up from the airport. A young, cheerful Vietnamese man…we talked a lot on the way from the airport. It was my first time in Vietnam, I was absorbing everything around me. Cars are too expensive to buy in Vietnam, hundreds of motor cycles and scooters are zigzagging on the road. Steve brought me to the Pearl hotel near the old quarter. HTS travel and transport service is only 2 minute walk from there. It’s a decent hotel, although located in a congested area, but nice service. After I checked in, I went to HTS office to pay my dues. Alice and Leila ... read more
